  • 4th Official: Jon Moss

Good morning stat-fans and welcome to RefWatch… guess what – we now have an official release of data for referee appointments… (possibly due to the fact that we were all getting the data anyway, and cutting the official data flow just forced us fellow Ref-watchers to seek each other out, network and share our information) – although it’s not brilliant [the new release] as it’s done randomly as part of a news feed on the official EPL site in a ‘hard-to-leech’ format with efforts made to make it tedious to copy/record.

As inaccurate as it was at times, I’m going to miss the old RefWorld website and part of me feels a teeny bit responsible for its demise.

*one minutes silence*

Let’s have a look at the Referee:

  • Full name: Stuart Steven Attwell
  • Date of birth: 06-Oct-1982 (Age 29)
  • Place of birth: Nuneaton
  • Resides: Warwickshire
  • EPL Referee Since: 2008/2009
  • EPL Games to date: 36

Stuart Attwell
Sniff my thumb.

It’s Stuart Attwell again… you remember him from those two games we had last season:

West Bromwich Albion 2-2 Arsenal (2011-03-19)
Arsenal 4-1 Bolton Wanderers (2010-09-11)

Not bad I suppose; 4 points and a red card for Bolton – but not much more to say that that. I’d check out the RefReview to see how he did. In terms of ‘form’ in the realm of the ‘creative desicion making’ department; young master Attwell has a record as long as your arm – you can read all about it with a simple google… even Graham Poll was shocked!

Anyhoo – for what it’s worth – let’s check out his stats!

Stuart Attwell has had 0 games for Swansea City consisting of 0 wins, 0 draws and 0 losses… so there is no graph or anything – sorry.

Let’s move on now to check out how Stuart Attwell performs against selected teams in the EPL:

Stuart Attwell Vs. EPL (AHS)

So yeah – there you go and it doesn’t tell us much – we did ok last season in terms of the swing and points but we only have 2 games data.

I am aware that this post is thin and I was semi-tempted to bail out this week – so please, treat this as just a record of the officials and a place to comment on decisions during the match – be it controversial or otherwise. I spent a lot of Friday creating an all new graph for you readers pertaining to booking times and player positions – it was pretty sweet – but due to the lack of data for today’s match it’s going to have to wait for another day.

The Predictortron gives Arsenal a 1.500000 goal advantage… but that’s just our standard home win average – so I would ignore that. I reckon we are going to smash at least 3 more past them then they can score against us – enjoy the show!

  1. The ref may be ok but the assistant Steve Bennett, is he the same dodgy ref in assistants cloathing?

I hope not! I’m looking forward to a good display with lots of goals and a clean sheet.

  2. Actually menace – he was posted ‘S Bennett’ so I assumed Steve – but now you mention it, I recall that it is actually ‘Simon Bennett’ who is on the assistant list for the PGMOL.

I will change – thanks for highlighting this!

  3. PS: See you at the Auld Triangle if you are there. Walter is already travelling from Belgium, and I am getting the early train down from the Midlands to meet him around 12.30.

  4. @ Dogface

Some statistics i would like to see in the reviews, not sure that including them would add anything to the individual reviews but, would certainly help to clarify the bigger picture.

FPB for England players as opposed to other players
FPB Black players as opposed to non blacks
referees % booking black V non black players
Individual referees booking ratios black to non black

like i said it would play no part in the actual reviews, but now we are reviewing so many games it would be fascinating data.

Well done Dogface, more power to your elbow.

PS I do owe you a drink (as i do you Tony) and hopefully will buy you one soon, today I am at the game, but have to be elsewhere, shame as i would love to have a chat with you all and get together with Walter again.

Come on you Gunners, clean sheet and a strong performance!!

  5. Hmmm… if you can get me the data on this then I will do the analysis – I need a list of player names, nationality and ethnicity…

  6. @laundryender I am sure the stats you ask for will be difficult to get but I’m sure they will paint a scary picture. The incidents you will not get are when the referee has a chat with a player as opposed to showing a card.

There are aspects that only a view of actual play or several camera angles that can resolve. However, when several thousand fans see unfair officiating, live and respond with ‘you don’t know what you’re doing’ something must ring a bell at the FA. I think it’s the betting shop tills!!!! (I must be getting cynical in my old age).

We will be glad to see you guys posting the review soon, it will give more rooms to nail this shambolic features in football match these days…..All eyes on blacks and other ethnics non-English playerz……Tell us more

  8. @Goonerboyz – Walter (and his team of referee’s) take care of the RefReview – I only do the RefWatch… hopefully soon I can combine RefReview data into my RefWatch – but not yet.

    🙂
