By Ref Reviewer 04

For our last Champions league game in the group stages as the knock out stages still await for us we had a ref from Spain who listens to the name Mallenco.

For me the second goal was not just a foul by Mannone but certainly a foul on Mannone.

As you can see on the picture (if it loads) you can see that Mirallas clearly came in with a high foot aimed in the direction of the head of Mannone. In my version of the laws of the game this is a foul. Maybe Mannone lost his head after the foul on him and thus made a mess of the rest.

But as this was a game of little importance I will not get mad about it. In fact the ref had a not that good first half but a very good second half. So his final score is very decent.

  1. Excellent review and thanks. How amazing that the best ref performance for ages should come from a spanish chap. If our refs are doing their best- heaven help them. But if they ARE following an agenda- then how is that different from the recently jailed cricketers bending of the game?

  2. I don’t mean to knock the review at all, because I actually like it. But I think what the review can’t show is the sheer physicality that was present in the match. The ‘decisions’ of the referee might have been largely correct but I thought the entire flow of the match was wrong. The Olympiacos players were committed, but they would go overboard with the roughness of their play, and whenever we managed to get the ball off them, they would have a sneaky tug or block us. That sort of thing is dirty play and the ref didn’t punish it. Not that we played well, but I disliked how Olympiacos were playing and I was glad that they went out in the end, and also that they did in such a cruel manner.

  3. I’ve gotta agree with Shard, my initial opinion straight after the match was that the referee had a shocker. Maybe I need to watch it again !
