All in all a rather fair game from the ref. He missed a few things early on in the game but then gradually got better.
A talking point was the disallowed goal from Adebayor. The ball hit him on his midrif but then he moved his left arm to the ball and pushed it on so the ref was correct in ruling this goal out.
Another moment that could have gone against United was the penalty shout for a possible foul on Adebayor. No replays were shown at the time so I will stick with the ref on this one.

A rather poor start from the ref but a very good finish of the game. His second half was almost perfect.

The bias table is also very well split up between both teams.
After the controversy of last years game between Chelsea and Manchester united at Stamford Bridge it took Atkinson almost one year to get another United game. So he did what most human beings would do: rule out any controversial decision going against United. He didn’t hold the cards behind against United (a mild way of showing some protest?) but when it mattered he gave the advantage of the doubt to United. Not saying that he tilted the game but I think I could see some making sure nothing could be said after the game of doing something against United.
Because let’s face it a ref wants to do those kind of games. If you as a ref had the choice between doing Wigan – Stoke or Tottenham – Manchester United? What would you like to do most? The choice is obvious for any ref and so he took the road to those kind of games again and I think SAF and Mike Riley will allow him back in after this game. Not sure he will ever get Chelsea – United ever again in his live but after this game I think he will be given more important games again.
Ummm, this ‘reporter’ spends more time analysing referees who ref Manchester United games anf then ‘publishes’ questionable data.
Perhaps instead of watching Man Utd games on the tv and attempting to discredit ‘certain’ referees you should be out there watching and perhaps supporting Arsenal F.C, but for heavens sake PLEASE, PLEASE, PLEASE don’t evaluate the ref’s performance. Watch the players not the ref, OR just maybe you have something about watching the match officials. Ummm
Thanks for an excellent report. I agree with the tone of the evaluation. If looked to me at the time- that as long as United won Atkinson could ‘get away’ with being fair- and he did. Riley would be pleased with that one!
Ummmm this ref who reviews the refs is doing this because we like to keep an eye on how the refs perform in the PL. I can understand as a MU fan that you rather not talk about the refs too much in a way.
You could as I asked you in the other article perhaps come up with more reliable data? If you have access to the PGMOL reports please share them with us. But as the PGMOL doesn’t want to make their numbers public we review the games ourselves and this is done by refs.
And about discrediting ‘certain’ referees you can always try to name the ones we are discrediting.
If you would take the trouble I could show you ref reviews where we have shown that MU got robbed at Stoke, that Tottenham got robbed at Stoke (coincidence it both happened at Stoke?). We are not after the skin of “certain” refs just for the sake of it.
I could give you an example of Dowd. Who made the most biased game (just behind Mike Riley in game 50 of the unbeaten run once did) last season against Arsenal. And still this season on all the reviews (the last table we made) was the best ref in the EPL so far this season.
Now if we would be out here doing it just to discredit ‘certain’ refs we would pick Dowd (I think together with Dean the most hated ref amongst most Gooners) to be discredited. But our ref reviewers say he has been the best so far this season.
But I can see from where you are coming… when SAF wants to make us all believe ‘it evens out’ you love to believe him.
We can prove it does not even out. Can you or SAF prove it does even out? Please present your evidence.
It’s only a 110 games to catch up so if you hurry up a bit you should be ready when the new season starts…
