77 FREE KICK ARS C 1
77 OFFSIDE ARS C Podolski scores from the freekick that got a slight deflection of a Stoke defender. Assistant raises his flag to signal an offside. Walcott was standing in a not active offside position at the far side some 10 meters away from where the ball was going. A ridiculous signal that is rightly so overruled by the ref. 2

  1. These reviews suffer insofar as no summary is offered.

And I have a major gripe re double jeopardy.
As I’ve said before you cannot penalise a ref for a correct decision by taking points away because he didn’t make a previous decision. See #76
To take it to extremes…it is the equivalent of giving a plus point for correctly awarding a goal but taking away 4 or 5 points because a “correct” goal wasn’t given previously.

  2. The term double jeopardy is incorrect. The reference and attachment to a previous foul is relevant. It clarifies what should have happened – all things being correctly awarded.

A summary would be very useful but could also have a biased view. This system is specific and to the point.

  3. A SUMMARY

As this is the same format as used on the refereedecisions website we don’t include a summary and try to let the numbers do the talking.
On Untold I usually try to write a few words. But as I don’t know when Tony puts it up I sometimes am a bit behind.

The first half was not a bad one by the ref. Only a few wrong decisions like calling afoul on Arteta when he totally missed the ball and the player with a sliding but still called a foul. In the light of other things he let go a strange decision. Wilkinson made 3 identical fouls on Walcott and didn’t get a yellow card.

In the second half Wilkinson continued his personal war with Walcott making fouls on and off of the ball and escaping a yellow card was unbelievable. He finally got what he should have gotten one on the second half but the ref should have sent him off. But to be honest some fouls were off the ball and the assistant never helped the ref.

Shawcross, who is not that guy as we know, made his mother cry when he planted his studs in the groins of Koscielny. He didn’t retract his leg while sliding (remember Ramsey?) in and he could see that Koscielny had put the ball already away. He remained his outstretched leg as it was. (not that kind of guy as we know). He maybe was first going for the ball but he was clearly beaten and not bending his leg at that moment was … oh well he is not that kind of player.

Owen also came on and when Arteta went in wild and the ref called no foul he tried to punch Arteta with his fist. A punch, spit, hit, slap towards an opponent is always a red card and it doesn’t matter if it makes contact or not. I think the same week a WBA player was sent off for spitting in the direction of a Tottenham player. It was aimed in his direction and this is enough to give a red card.

Poor game from the ref apart from one decision: overruling the assistant.

What on earth was he thinking when raising his flag. For the moment and for various reasons I have taken on being an assistant and I can tell you that in his position he should have seen that Walcott was 10 meters further up the field being not active at all and he also should have seen that the ball came off a defender.

The assistant who once saw nothing wrong when Chelsea made two offside goals to beat Wigan 2-1 last season was maybe thinking he was doing that team a favour by making a desperate attempt to rule out the goal. Lucky even for Foy this was one big (Stamford) bridge too far.

  4. Another good review and the reviewer correctly identified the fact that once again Stoke seem to get away with fouls that should be punished. Stoke could very easily have finished with only 8 players on the field – that probably needs to happen a few times to get Pulis to rein in his rugby team.

  5. For me teams like stoke/westham and the rest who play like them deserve to be in a jung-su league or karate football. But that’s what the English like best, hardness kicking and sometimes boxing.
If stoke was in spain or brazil they would not be competing anywhere at all but here its normal.
A quick one, what happened to pulis he never run off the field these days??
