Mathieu Debuchy: you just can’t trust Arsenal

Typical Arsenal.  I spend ages writing a piece about predictions, and how Arsenal have only signed one player, and all that stuff, and then Arsenal go and make a signing.

In case you don’t know Arsenal have signed full-back Mathieu Debuchy from Newcastle for about £12m

He was part of the French World Cup squad and has 25 caps, and replaces Bacary Sagna.

Debuchy said: “I’m very proud to be joining a great club like Arsenal and to wear its colours, it’s one of the biggest clubs in the whole world. I’m looking forward to working with Arsène Wenger and to helping the team build on last season’s FA Cup success. Playing again in the Champions League is a big excitement for me and I will do my best to help Arsenal compete for trophies.”

Wenger’s official comment is: “We are delighted to welcome Mathieu Debuchy to Arsenal Football Club. He has shown he can perform at the highest level with his club sides and also for France. He is a quality defender who has good Premier League experience and I’m confident he will fit in very well with us.”

Debuchy played 46 times for Newcastle in 18 months after signing from Lille, Arsene Wenger’s favourite hunting ground.

He won Ligue 1 and Coupe de France double in 2010-11. He was named in the Ligue 1 team of the season the following year,

There will be a more detailed appraisal from Walter on Friday morning.

  1. This is an excellent signing, and one we were all expecting.
Looks like we can get the players we want and only halfway through July.
    Two more to come?

  2. Sick! Debuchy will replace Sagna, great signing! 😛 Played well in the World Cup, and had more playing time than Bacary. Hopefully he can play well! 🙂

  3. jambug
Who knows? A keeper & DM?
Couldn’t name names though, but both of our two big ones so far have been expected.

  4. I think Debuchy will be a top signing and, don’t shoot the messenger, but he is a better defender than Sagna.

I hope we haven’t given up on signing Remy as he would be an excellent addition. Add A Bender and a keeper and we are good to go!

    Allez Arsenal!!!

  5. How is that an upgrade from sagna? I do not get this deal. Sagna was much better and can cover at center back. Bad Investment. With that money, wenger could have rewarded Sagna for his services, invest in an all around right back to compete with Jenkinson and see what happens.

  6. I already know we have a goalkeeper coming at some point so my two choices would be a striker, I see Sanchez as a winger; and a DM, though I’m delighted with Flamini.

  7. I like this player he is good but we have paid a pretty penny £12m for someone who turns 29 next week … I suppose Wenger can’t win 😉 … Personally I would have given Sagna the contract he wanted and deserved IMO Sagna is a warrior and a truly great player for arsenal but it is what it is … This is a good signing just think the price is top heavy. I would like to see goalie come in and provide competition for sczcnesy I believe that’s happening with nice keeper I ospina plus a centre half if vermanlen leaves

  8. Welcome Mathieu. As it stands we’re stronger than where we were last season with these two signings. If anyone else were to come in it’d be a bonus

  9. Normally figures quoted Arsenal as having paid are usually lower than the actual ones. Like many sources quote 35m for Sanchez, but actual figure is around 30 or lower. Wouldn’t be surprised if Debuchy cost around 8m

  10. @ john,

maybe wenger sees jenkinson as the long term successor to sagna and this signing buys him a couple years to develop?
i personally would have preferred auier but i think the african nations and the fact debuchy has premiership experience made this a better option for wenger.
as for the price? it seems about right to me. hes 28, about to be 29. he may not have much resale value in three years but if he gives us the same consistency and passion that sagna gave he will have been good value.

  11. Great signing. Debucy will be 29 in about 10 days; this is perfect for Carl Jemkinson to learn and to eventually become the regular first team right back.

  12. Can’t spell today.
Debuchy, not Debucy; Debussy was a composer.
    Jenkinson, not Jemkinson.

  14. I wonder now how Arsene gonna call Debucy and Flamini by their first name… separately…
