In the process Bellerin just touched Lewandowski who was running towards him, who had also stopped after giving up on the ball.

Suddenly the referee gave a foul against Arsenal. There was no foul contact by Bellerin on Lewandowski. The play should have carried on and no foul should have been awarded against Arsenal.

LAW 12 FOULS AND MISCONDUCT PAGE 125

Cautions for Unsporting Behaviour

• Attempts to deceive the referee by feigning injury or pretending to have been fouled (simulation)

• Attempts to deceive the referee by feigning injury or pretending to have been fouled (simulation)

43:15 Alexis Sanchez (Arsenal)   Thiago took a shot inside the box and Koscienly deflected the ball away. Sanchez who was inside the box raised his left arm which was away from the body and stopped the ball with it inside the penalty box. This should have been a penalty for Bayern Munich and a yellow card against Sanchez for deliberate handball.

Handling the Ball

Handling the ball involves a deliberate act of a player making contact with the ball with his hand or arm. The referee must take the following into consideration:

• The movement of the hand towards the ball (not the ball towards the hand)

• The distance between the opponent and the ball (unexpected ball)

• The position of the hand does not necessarily mean that there is an infringement

• Touching the ball with an object held in the hand (clothing, shinguard, etc.) counts as an infringement

• Hitting the ball with a thrown object (boot, shinguard, etc.) counts as an infringement

Disciplinary sanctions

There are circumstances when a caution for unsporting behaviour is required when a player deliberately handles the ball, e.g. when a player:

• Deliberately handles the ball to prevent an opponent gaining possession

• Attempts to score a goal by deliberately handling the ball

A player is sent off, however, if he prevents a goal or an obvious goalscoring opportunity by deliberately handling the ball. This punishment arises not from the act of the player deliberately handling the ball but from the unacceptable and unfair intervention that prevented a goal being scored

Other

Time Type Description & Decision Points
25:52 Injury Arsenal were in control of the ball and Cazorla was moving forward when suddenly the referee stopped the game. REFER to the incident at Minute 25:43. The referee had stopped the game for Vidal who was faking an injury from a dive earlier on.

Referee wrongly stopped the game, because there was no serious injury or even an injury to Vidal at all. This resulted in preventing Arsenal from attacking forward.

Now that the referee had stopped the game, he should he sent Vidal off the field for treatment, which the referee failed to do so.

LAW 5 THE REFEREE PAGE 37

Injured Players

The referee must adhere to the following procedure when dealing with injured players:

• Play is allowed to continue until the ball is out of play if a player is, in the opinion of the referee, only slightly injured.

• Play is stopped if, in the opinion of the referee, a player is seriously injured.

• After questioning the injured player, the referee may authorize one, or at most two doctors, to enter the field of play to assess the injury and arrange the player’s safe and swift removal from the field of play.

• Stretcher-bearers should only enter the field of play with a stretcher following a signal from the referee.

• The referee must ensure an injured player is safely removed from the field of play.

• A player is not allowed to receive treatment on the field of play.

Let us start with the biggest decision on the night. The handball of Alexis in the Arsenal penalty area. This had all the marks for a deliberate handball. Hand in an unnatural position, moving towards the ball, the ball was not played from a close distance, …. this should have been a penalty in favour of Bayern. So for once we can say that Arsenal was lucky with a mistake from the ref.

The other errors were more in favour of Bayern and even with a technical error when he stopped the match for “an injury” from Vidal. It was just play acting from Vidal and the ref should have send him to the side line after he stopped the match. This is also to show the players that you will not tolerate such messing around with you on the field.

The first half score of the ref was a rather poorish typical PGMO score with 66%. If we put weight on the decisions it goes down to 53.8%. So not good at all. But the thing that cost him most was the not given penalty in favour of Bayern.

The second half the ref was much better. Well he was so good that he only made one mistake. In extra time just before Arsenal scored their second goal Özil was running away from the Arsenal goal and was pulled back a few times even. The ref was right behind it and as a result of the pulling Özil lost control of the ball and ran out o the field with the ball. I still cannot understand why the ref didn’t give the foul at that moment. He had done it superbly in the first half allowing advantage and then coming back to the foul when the advantage was gone. He should have done the same.

The first Arsenal goal was not a foul. Giroud headed it with his forehead and the ball slightly touching his hand was not deliberate. He jumped forward with his hand in a natural position, didn’t move towards the ball or guided it, so never a punishable handball.

The second goal was also a valid one. The ball clearly crossed the line and luckily the assistant behind the goal had spotted it. To have such a goal line decisions in your match is rather unique. To have two such decisions in two matches after each other is even more unique. And to have both decisions happening in the same goal is close to extremely unique I think.

The ref had a great score in the second half of 93.3%. And if we put weight on the decisions the score goes up to 95%. The PGMO dream score one could say.

But all in all over the whole 90 minutes too many mistakes cost him in his score. A total score of 77.7% and when we put weight on the decisions it goes down to 71.7%. Just acceptable one could say.

But do remember that in this match we had a lucky escape when the ref didn’t give a penalty for Bayern for a handball from Alexis. And do remember that Untold Arsenal said so.

5 Replies to “Ref Review : Arsenal – Bayern Munich”

  1. I also looked at the replays of the Giroud’s goal, and I can say there is not enough conclusive evidence that he gained an advantage by handling the ball – which if it did happen it was minimal.

  2. Excellent job, lads.

I would just like to point out, when we are at referees’ mistakes in favour of Arsenal to pay attention on offside decisions in the second half when doing the one from the Everton game. Either my stream was shite or we had three chances thanks to the linesman who forgot to raise the flag in each occasion.

  3. You have not included the officials on the goal line. Those with the wand & a specialist job that is not defined in the Laws of the Game.
