92:00 Nacho Monreal (Arsenal) The ball made contact with the arm but it is difficult to judge if he was trying to protect his head with his arm as the foot of Navas caught him on the elbow and so the ref could judge this as accidental, he looks to be trying to move his arm out of the way as he opens up his arm to make the ball go past his arm when it drops. Just touching the arm is not enough to call it a penalty, the only thing that is in favour of a penalty is the fact that his arm is not in a natural position and then makes contact

Andre Marriner was the ref for this match.

Man City with the early goal that was completely in order when we look at the laws of the game.

Jesus Navas seemed completely worked up for this match as he committed 3 fouls within the first 8 minutes. The third foul was a real terrible one as he went in over the ball and his studs made contact with the shin of Monreal just under the knee. Luckily Monreal could remove his foot from the turf as otherwise this could have been a terrible injury. This had to be a red card but the ref let it go with only a yellow card. One could imagine this match might have been different with Man City having to play with 10 man for more than 80 minutes.

Then Walcott then made a rash tackle and ended on the foot of Fernandinho. The ref didn’t even give the foul and the yellow card was also not given. That was another big mistake from the ref. Alexis went down under a challenge from Fernandinho but replays show the Brazilian played the ball and then there was a little contact with Alexis but no foul contact.

But apart from the two incidents where the cards stayed in the pocket the ref did a good job.

First half socre:  82.7% and 76.7% (Weighted) Good

In the second half the ref managed to even improve his score. Correct yellow cards against Fernandinho and Mustafi for attack breaking fouls and a good spot when Otamendi fouled Ospina by jumping in his back when he tried to claim a cross.

The only error came from one of the assistants when he judged Monreal in an offside position when he was at least level with the last City defender.  One very important decision came in extra time. A ball bounced up from Monreal who tried to head it away, Navas who had tried to make the cross kicked at the ball and Monrael tried to use his head. When the ball fell down the ball slightly touched the arm of Monreal. This is a decision that is completely open to the refs interpretation.

The arm was in a unnatural position so there was a case for a penalty. The movement of the arm seemed to indicate that he wanted to avoid contact with the ball so that indicates Monreal touching the ball was accidental and not deliberate. The trajectory of the ball was full of twist and that can also point in the fact that it was difficult to speak about a deliberate handball. Navas kicking against the elbow of Monreal could also indicate that the contact was more or less forced upon him.

In the end the ref gave no penalty. If had given it, it would have been harsh but he could have done so. Whatever his decision would have been it can be defended and there are arguments for and against. So we gave the ref the decision but we also would have done if he had given a penalty.

  • Second half score:  94.4% and 95.8% (Weighted) Excellent.
  • Overall score:  87.2% and 83.5% (Weighted) Very Good.

And what made his match excellent for me was that he only made 6 errors and it was nicely spread between the two teams: 3 each.

  • 1 wrong major decision (Navas red card not given)
  • 1 correct major decision of the non-penalty for Man City.
  • 1 correct but doubtful decision of the non-penalty for Arsenal.

Ref review: Arsenal – West Ham United. There was a certain level of bias by the referee. But how much and against which team?

23 Replies to “Ref Review: Arsenal – Man City: a decent display from Andre Marriner”

  1. If the referee had had a good game, there would be no need for this “assessment “. You seem to be trying to convince yourself as much as us that City weren’t robbed. It’s not working

  2. Agree with all of this apart from the infamous “sun in eyes” offside given against Monreal. He looked a yard off to me. I thought so on the day, and your video proves it surely?

  3. I saw Mike Riley on Sky this morning and he was talking.

Well, his lips were moving anyway!

  4. I don’t very often disagree with UA but I’m with Leon (on this occasion only). Monreal looks well offside……………….

  5. Unsurprisingly, the monreal handball/penalty is explained away or should i say reinterpreted and the ref is given the benefit of the doubt, despite it been clear to see that monreal stretches out his arm to make contact with the ball(despite a late and feeble attempt to withdraw the arm). Why do i feel if it had happened against the team in red some people here would have been frothing at the mouth. Ref review bias, incompetence or ref review type3 fixing? ???

    Are you for real?

This site was set upon the basis of referee reviews:

Just look down the left hand side under PAGES and the first thing you see is ‘160 games reviewed’.

Need or not, this site reviews each and every match played by Arsenal.

You seem to be trying to convince us he had a bad game. It’s not working.

Untold has produced an extensive report assisted with video evidence to support them.

I look forward to you supplying similar evidence to support your point of view.

  7. Sb: You ask, “Why do i feel if it had happened against the team in red some people here would have been frothing at the mouth?” I suppose the answer is because you don’t believe the validity of the work of the referee panel here with their 160 game review. Which then raises the question, why don’t you, or indeed why doesn’t anyone, replicate the work of the referee team and next season, you review the first 160 games with video evidence as the Untold team did, and then we can look at your reports and see if you (in our eyes) reveal any bias. That would be the true test.

  8. Let there be no much arguments amongst the Untolders over the good referee review work done at numerous occasions by the Untold Arsenal referee review panel who are highlighting and pointing out the wrong small, big and major decisions making by referees which have swayed the outcome of PL matches against Arsenal in what is increasing becoming match fixing type whatever by Mr Riley’s Pgmol outfit. Due credit should be accorded to the referee review panel at the Untold Arsenal for the strenuous pains they go through before they come with a clean copy of the review referee review publications every week. This work is certainly not an easy work to do but hard. My kudos to the Untold Arsenal referee review panel. Please keep the good work on.

  9. Sb, “feeble attempt to withdraw the arm”??? fcking Navas kicked him in the arm with high foot

  10. OlegYch
So what does your geometry prove?
    That he’s inside perspective lines?
Anymore offside and he’d be in the Sobell Centre

  11. Leon, anything on the left of the middle line is closer to the goal than Monreal feet/head

  12. Olegych

Do you know what? I think you’re absolutely right.
I was looking at the other player (Ozil I think) who was offside but not making a play, whereas Monreal came from being just onside. My fault, I was confusing the two of them.
    Sorry for doubting you Walter.
    Goonermikey take note.

  13. About the Monreal handball incident, surely Navas kicking Monreal arm (even if it was accidental) should be given as a foul against City, right?

  14. Leon

I wondered if you had got the players mixed up.

Well done sir for admitting your error. Easily done I can attest to that.

  15. I agree with Vince. Walter could you elaborate? Why do you not see the kick to Monreal’s arm as a foul? I am not trying to challenge your views, I would merely like an explanation to improve my understanding of the rules.

  16. I agree with Vince and JP. Navas kicking Monreals arm caused the handball, how could that possibly be construed as anything other than entirely accidental. I also disagree that his arm is in an unnatural position, given his body position and falling forward movement it is entirely natural to have your arms outstretched for balance. He is not looking up at the ball either, he is looking down.
You could also make a good case for Navas being penalized for a high boot.
I do not see any evidence at all to support a penalty being awarded. Could it be Walter that you are going out of your way to appear unbiased!!!

  17. The village idiot with another unsuccessful effort atvteolking the connect section at Untold.

This is another helpful review following yet another accurate preview for Sunday’s match. Thank you.

Given this reliable and observable record I think everyone can understand why the gr*t sniffing Experts have been failing to troll the comments section for so long now.
