Curse of Arsenal: Birmingham get final knock

In case you’ve not come across it before, the Curse of Arsenal is placed on certain clubs when they behave in a way that is considered outside acceptable behaviour.

It is used sparingly, and each Curse only lasts for one season. Last year two clubs were cursed: Birmingham City and AC Milan. Birmingham got the Curse not because of the attack on Eduardo but because of the way in which they defended themselves, fought off a FIFA investigation and suggested that a 3 match ban was adequate and acceptable.

The Curse resulted in Birmingham being relegated, having two raids from the fraud squad, having two senior directors arrested and having one accused of a sexual assault by a woman in Essex. We should add that no charges have been brought and there is no suggestion anyone acted illegally; the Curse does not work like that. It just makes life a bit difficult.

The Curse ended at the end of the season, but there was on left-over which has just been resolved. Birmingham have been fined £30,000 and ordered to pay costs after the EPL found that they were guilty of a ticket pricing policy that discriminated against away fans.

So that’s what you got Birmingham for your attempts to say nothing untoward happened over Eduardo.

(In case you are wondering AC Milan lost their matches after stealing Flamini and so are not in the Champions League)

No team has been given the curse yet this season.
