Arsenal History …… Making the Arsenal …… Arsenal Uncovered

—————————–

By Tony Attwood

It is strange that the “25” is announced after the first few games – just as it is odd to have a restricted transfer window which overlaps the season.  But that’s Uefa for you – bunch of nerds who can’t see… well can’t see anything really.

Anyway, we finally got confirmation of Arsenal’s squad for the EPL games, and of course no surprises, except who they chose to list in their under 21 list.

I’ve added in the injuries etc for this weekend where I know them – it is of course in no way definitive, or come to think of it, accurate.

Homegrown players

1. Johan Djourou
2. Kieran Gibbs
3. Vito Mannone
4. Alex Song – suspended
5. Theo Walcott

Non-homegrown players:

1. Manuel Almunia
2. Andrey Arshavin
3. Mikel Arteta
4. Yossi Benayoun
5. Marouane Chamakh
6. Abou Diaby – injured
7. Lukasz Fabianski
8. Gervinho – suspended
9. Laurent Koscielny
10. Per Mertesacker
11. Chu Young Park – jet lag from the internationals?
12. Tomas Rosicky
13. Bacary Sagna – ill
14. Andre Santos
15. Sebastien Squillaci – injured ?
16. Robin van Persie
17. Thomas Vermaelen – injured

That makes 22 players

Under 21s in the main squad

  1. Emmanuel Frimpong
  2. Francis Coquelin
  3. Carl Jenkinson
  4. Benik Afobe
  5. Ignasi Miquel
  6. Ryo
  7. Jack Wilshere – injured
  8. Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain
  9. Aaron Ramsey
  10. Wojciech Szczesny

So effectively our squad of 25 is actually a squad of 32.  And we might still add someone else from the list below.

The others… (I haven’t taken out all the loans since the situation is always fluid, and anyway I have to go to work now and I got up late.)

  1. Chuks Aneke
  2. Martin Angha
  3. Zak Ansah
  4. Kyle Bartley
  5. Daniel Boateng
  6. George Brislen-Hall
  7. Joel Campbell
  8. Craig Eastmond
  9. Kyle Ebecilio
  10. Luke Freeman
  11. Samuel Galindo
  12. Sead Hajrovic
  13. Conor Henderson
  14. Gavin Hoyte
  15. Henri Lansbury
  16. Damian Martinez
  17. Sean McDermott
  18. Jernade Meade
  19. Elton Monteiro
  20. Rhys Murphy
  21. Nigel Neita
  22. Oguzhan Ozyakup
  23. James Shea
  24. Sanchez Watt
  25. Wellington
  26. Nico Yennaris

  1. Interesting about the jeg lag situation. As far as I have suffered from jetlag it was when traveling from west to east (usa to Belgium) and losing a night made me suffer for a few days. But the other way (from Belgium to the USA) I had no problems in adapting and also the rest of the family had no bad effects. After the return voyage we all suffered.

So if Chu Young Park comes from South Korea he should not have much trouble. I guess. I hope. As I would love to have a look at him next Saturday. 5 new players I hope I can see them all on the pitch. I think I have chosen a good game for my first game of the season to come to the Emirates 😉

  2. And about the Under 21s in the main squad is is interesting to see that apart from Ryo they all will count as homegrown players in the future. I think.

  3. Walter,

I think Ryo will count as Homegrown.. He turns 21 on Dec 14, 2013.

Premier League rules say he must have spent 36 months at the club prior to his 21st birthday, or the end of the season in which he turns 21. Which would mean till May 2014.

So I think since we bought him before May 2011, he should count as HomeGrown, because I think players out on loan for Work Permit issues still count as being registered with Arsenal.

  4. For the 2011/12 season U21 players are those born on or after 1st January 1990. So Ryo will have the 2011/12, 2012/13 and 2013/14 seasons before he has to be registered. Which would mean he’s spent 3 seasons at Arsenal even without the 6 months he was out on loan.. SO I think ALL on that list count as HomeGrown 🙂

  5. By then we could almost submit a full list of 25 all homegrown players 😉

In fact if you take out the older non homegrown players and those that are very likely to leave by then we should have a home grown squad of at least 15 players.

  6. As someone nearing his 88th birthday, I’ve given up trying to follow (and understand) this 25 list, particularly the Homegrown and non-Homegrown guys plus the under 21 boys.
I’d recently fathomed out the Financial Fair Play Regs, only to read recently that the big Clubs have already discovered a way around them.
With all this confusion it will only need another near 8-2 defeat to consign me to “that football stadium in the sky”, aged 77!

  7. Jenkinson is suspended for the next game as well, so the right back position is a bit of a worry. I did hear the Sagna has recovered. Hoping thats true.

  8. English press are just complaining of Mertasecker pace unneccessarily,at for he is far better than Cahil,if about his pace how did he cope with pacy England strike in world?. We have gotten what we wanted and am sure he wil prove them wrong very soon.

  9. @walter
i dont think wenger will put all 5 new boys on the pitch because hes not really one for wholesale changes. it would totally ruin any team chemistry we have/had especially as the internationals meant theyve only had a few days to train together. however, games against the likes of swanseas should be ones we can blood in new faces.

I think he’ll be forced to play Mertesacker and Santos. But i think he will start rosicky, frimpong and ramsey but maybe bring arteta off the bench. I dont think we will see Park, and benayoun may come on in places of arshavin.

I do really want to see Ryo make a debut though… although Wenger may save him for the carling cup.

  10. I think Sagna played for France on Tuesday. In fact I have seen him play so he should be fit I think.

  11. So our potential lineup is:
    “The One and Only”
    Sagna Koscielny Mertesacker Santos
    Frimpong Ramsey
    Arteta
    Walcott RvP Arshavin/Rosicky

If you think about it, that’s quite a team, compared to the poor sods who had to face United.

  12. Woolwich
With the execption of Arshavin, that’s a really good looking starting 11. If my old man wasn’t a CCFC supporter, I’d be feeling a bit sorry for Swansea 🙂

  13. I think Per & Areta will start, probably Santos also, and I wouldn’t be suprised to see one of Park or Benayon be on the bench or even start with Gervinho out still, I would like to see Alex Oxlade Chamberlain sometime soon personally.

  14. it’s laughable really. You consider our youth team to be equivalent to premier league teams.
    Ignorance is bliss.

  15. Sagna played the whole game Romania – France on Tuesday. Btw, I had the chance to see in that game our possible transfer targets – Marvin Martin and M’Vila. Hmm..,Martin was anonymous the whole game, he doesn’t look like Cesc in my opinion and M’Vila doesn’t look better than Song. But that was just one game…

  16. I think before Arsene can bring another player from outside which aren’t homegrown, he need to let go some players. Almunia, Diaby, Arshavin and Chamakh are the favorite if only there are club interesting in them.

  17. Did you guys look at ManU squad?? its has more under 21 players in the main squad….

But i think we should look at the other side…the players above 21yrs of age who really are of little use to us…for Eg, Squillaci and Almunia….our limit for foreign players above 21yrs of age has already reached the fullest, so any new experienced foreign player signings means that we’ll have to let go of someone from our foreign player category….and in such cases i’d really hope its Squillaci and Almunia leavin…

  18. @Dark Prince aka ‘The Eternal Pessimist’ =D

I’m sure Almunia will be leaving as soon as we find someone to take him off our hands and I’m sure the savvy boss will give Squillaci the chance to prove his worth early this season… if only to increase his bargaining position when it comes to moving him on!

Fact of the matter is, in the current financial climate the big teams are struggling to find takers for their highly paid squad players. Just ask the (I really want to say ‘losers’ here so lets just pretend that I resisted ok?) over at Totts, City & Liver.

PS On moving players…on, I hate to give too much credence to the latest Arsh rumours but regardless of whether or not you like the pint-sized Russian, it’s a good one!!!
