Four injured players out two suspended.  But less anyone gets too excited and starts up the old rumour about Arsenal having more than anyone else out, we might note that where as we have six players ruled out Bournemouth have seven.  King, Stacey, Groeneveld, Stanislas, Daniels, Mepham and Brooks.

In terms of matches between the two clubs previously, this is the first time they have met in the FA Cup.  Bournemouth’s best cup run (when they were known as Bournemouth and Boscombe Athletic) was 1956/7 season…

That shows one win for Bournemouth, 2-1 at their ground in 2018.  Overall it is 11 matches played, one win for Bournemouth, two draws and eight wins for Arsenal.  Away though we have only won twice

So what of the teams?

Squawka have

Martinez;

Maitland-Niles, Holding, Mustafi, Saka;

Guendouzi, Willock;

Pepe, Ozil, Martinelli;

Lacazette

The Guardian goes with

Martinez;

Bellerin, Sokratis, Holding, Saka;

Xhaka Guendouzi

Pepe, Ozil, Martinelli;

Nketiah

Football Talk gives us

Martinez

Maitland Niles   Sokratis  Holding   Saka

Torreira   Guendouzi

Pepe Caballos Martinelli

Lacazette

And in fact virtually all other predictors are running one of these or a slightly different combination of the players used above.

One interesting factor is that while normally teams that Arsenal play against are bolstered by constant talk in the media of how badly certain Arsenal players are performing, how weak the team is, how incompetent the management is and how chaotic the organisation of the club, at the moment there is a lot of talk about how good Martinelli is.   This should put extra pressure on the Bournemouth defenders to mark him out of the game.   That may or may not work as a tactic, but it should have the effect of allowing extra space for the other Arsenal forwards and attacking midfielders to explore.   Pulling defenders out of position is as much a part of attacking as making killer passes or scoring goals.

  1. I think you forgot something, Harry.

    Martin Atkinson will be on the wing for Bournemouth and in every other position as well. Mike Dean will be in the VAR Penalty box for Bournemouth. Mike Riley will be playing center back for Bournemouth from the stands and encouraging rotational tackling of various Arsenal players, which he will make sure goes unpunished.

    It beggars belief the officials they put out in our matches. But their arrogance will surely come before their fall. One day soon we will have honest, decent refereeing and referees who give a shit about things like honor. This lot sadly don’t and they’ve proved that on so many occasions. But every match we live in hope that they may change their ways.

  2. Looking at the pregame news, we see that Evening Standard can’t spell Mustafi’s name properly (forgot the s).

    Can Arteta work Mutafi miracle?

    COYG!

  3. @Sally,

    unless fans accross the country unite and start serioulsy showing their discontent in clear way, nothing will change…. and those who believe this is just an Arsenal fan talking ought to think that what happens here can happen to any team at any time, with no justification given. Just look at the fouls figure for Tottenham this season. Were I a Sp*rs fan (hevan forbid…) I’d have reasons to be pissed….

    The old ‘in the end it evens out’ line cannot be used when you’ve got the same referees over and over again, in one role or another, for one team. And I bet you this happens to other teams as well.

  4. @Chris and Sally. It happens to every team. The mighty Liverpool have had 17 of their games this season supervised by just 5 referees and have only had 10 all season, the fewest of all clubs.

  5. Chris

    “unless fans accross the country unite and start serioulsy showing their discontent in clear way, nothing will change”

    I’m so sorry to be so negative about this but I just cannot see that happening.

    The following is something I wrote in an earlier article entitled ‘Why you cant believe all you read in the papers’:

    “As you me and others have said many times Tony, what has happened to WHY?

    The answer is the media do not ask WHY because they do not want to know WHY.

    And the reason they don’t want to know WHY is I believe because they, rightly or wrongly, don’t think their readership even care as to WHY.

    And when I chat to my mates at work and try to raise some of the concerns we try to address on untold, their response tells me they are right, they don’t care.”

    And that’s what I find all the time.

    And to make it worse they already believe THEIR team is the most harshly treated already, and they still don’t care !

    If anyone else here has had a sympathetic, positive or any response at all at work, or with their mates, when they have raised any of the many issues Untold Arsenal have addressed, I would be interested to hear about it because not once have I found anyone who gives a ****

  6. Chris

    I did see that Chris, just expressing my thoughts that unforetuneatly it wont, because that’s what I see and hear.

    Maybe your experience is different

  7. Mustafi injures his left ankle as he falls awkwardly. The ball was being contested by Leno, Mustafi & Solanki.

  8. Atkinson turning on the selective vision. How long before an unsighted foul will give Arsenal pressure?

  9. @Nitram,

    what’s missing are two pintd of beer….and some music from the pub’s jukebox !

  10. Bournemouth 1 Arsenal 2. Next stop Portsmouth. Despite some rough stuff the Arsenal keep the winning position.

  11. Chris

    We were ‘Living on a prayer’ in injury but it’s now time to sink one in celebration of a hard earned victory.

    Cheers.

    Well done lads.

    Bring on Pompy.

  12. Did anyone notice the drop ball that Atkinson gave after the Sokratis head injury. From a drop ball, usually the ball is given back to the keeper. Ceballos even suggested he should send it back to theirs. Atkinson said no and then told him he couldn’t contest the drop ball either. Leaving us defending a ball at the edge of our box, a defender light. This is ludicrous officiating. Waiting at least thirty seconds before letting him back on. Disgraceful.

  13. Also why did VAR not check the pull on Willock and the pull on Pepe at the half way line. Both should have been at least reviewed at the least?

  14. The PGMOL Laws do not allow any probable fouls on Arsenal to be reviewed by VAR. The amazing thing is that Xhaka got booked for time wasting when VAR is the most wastful of time, energy and honesty. It is not unusual nowadays to hear ‘Fuck VAR’ sung at almost every ground in the land.

  15. Menace

    I understand your frustration but really they should be singing:

    ‘F*** the ignorant incompetent PGMOL twats that are utterly incapable of implementing VAR with any consistency or accuracy what so ever’

    Not as catchy I admit, but a more accurate description of the situation never the less.

  16. Arsenal.com taking a shot at VAR?

    VAR checked for a possible offside against Martinelli’s kneecap, but the goal stood, and we had some breathing space.

    Congratulations Gunners.

    Go to hell, PGMO.

  17. The Guadkndfvsnt89rg98truhnfvoun trying to be accurate?

    10 mins: The ball hits Guendouzi inside Arsenal’s penalty area and he goes down clutching his face. This is a near-certain sign that it not only hit his arm but also that he knew all about it, however replays show the ball did indeed hit him in the nose.

    Go to hell, PGMO.

  18. Why was Martinelli down?

    51 mins: Play continues for an age with Martinelli on the turf, apparently hurt. Arsenal attack for a while, then Bournemouth win the ball and have a go. Eventually the referee stops play though it’s hard to see why, there not being a head injury to worry about.

    Go to hell, PGMO.

  19. More accuracy from Guadkndfvsnt89rg98truhnfvoun:

    60 mins: It did look like Mustafi landed very awkwardly on his left foot, and that his ankle might very well be genuinely sore. Though of course he could just be timewasting.

    This silly medja outlet shouldn’t even be describing tiddlywinks.

  20. The blatant use of VAR against certain teams is beyond ridiculous now. When they scored their goal VAR was checking to see if our player committed a foul inside our goal… I mean inside the net! What were they thinking, give Bournemouth a free kick inside the goal?

    Of course I know they were looking to send one of our players off. Yesterday in the game between Shrewsbury and Liverpool, the ball hit a liverpool defender’s arm in the dying minutes, as clear as you could ever see, but no review. Today two of our players had their shirts pulled.. nothing. Disgusting.

  21. This is from the D…y Mail:

    51min: The home support are incensed after Martin Atkinson brings play back following a challenge on Martinelli. Arsenal had decided to play on, before the referee opted to halt the game to allow treatment.

    This sounds like Arsenal had a promising break going, and so Atkinson decided to stop the break by whistling.

    I guess there was some handbags with Guendouzi just after this.

  22. It was crap refereeing , especially in the second half. Hope all our players aer ok and that are no long term casualties . We were very good in the first half , but too defensive in the second.
    But well done to our youngsters for very spirited performance .
    Up the Gunners !

  23. On bein, french version, 2 commentators, one of them an Arsenal fan – nice for a change, were just making fun of the ref and VAR. Seriously. Just making fun, how ridiculous he was, how VAR was looking to find ways to nullify the goals. In the end, they were taking bets if the game would go past 100 minutes, celebrating the moment it arrived, enve saying that with this ref, the game that started on Monday would end on Wednesday… I’ve lost count of all the comments they made, but one thing was sure : this referee, to them, is a joke, as is VAR in the UK.

    I mean… were is the police ? Contact Interpol ! How are these guys allowed to roam free and talk about referees freely on a TV station about a game involving to PL teams ?

    Apart from that, the use of VAR as a tool to change results is just so blatant it becomes ridiculous. Interestingly suddenly, they are showing the details the inquisitor im chief is looking at. I used to see the VAR check logo and nothing more. Yesterday, we got a lesson in trigonometry.

  24. The trignometry that these guys use is questionable as is everything that thes corrupt swine do. The line across the pitch is straight but the angle may not be correct. The systems allow for a graphic of the top view (plan view) of the pitch which would be more appropriate for TV. It would probably reduce the PGMOL’s chance of benefit.

    The touch before the ball was directed into the Arsenal goal was cleverly avoided in the replays shown. If it were a Kane boot they would have even given him the goal 😉 .

  25. If an Arsenal player had left a foot in like that left in on Martinelli’s ankle there would almost certainly be a check and slow mo. Minimum yellow card. No fould says Atkinson and Dean on VAR

  26. These things can happen so quick that the on pitch official misses it. The VAR officials must examine footage when a player stays down and a card has to be issued if there is a mistimed tackle that causes injury. BUT that only holds true if Arsenal are not beneficiaries according to the Laws of The PGMOL Game.

  27. The commentators are in on it too. Just imagine the roles reversed and frazer gets caught like that ‘ OOooh and Frazers been caught there, I wonder what VAR will show about that one, looked late and dangerous to me…….’

  28. markyb

    Talking of commentators.

    Did anyone notice another small, but I think telling conversation after the match involving Keown?

    It’s regarding our opening goal that involved 22 passes in the build up.

    I don’t know about any of you, but as well as admiring it for the magnificent goal it was, as an Arsenal fan, the first thing I thought of was ‘Wengerball’.

    It took me back to some of those wonderful goals we scored in those halcyon days, which you would of thought, given Keown actually played under Wenger in those halcyon days, and who like me is surely an Arsenal fan, it would of done for him too.

    But no.

    For some reason it took him, Via Arteta, to Man City, a club he never played for, and then to Pep, a manager he never played under, and then to Barcelona, a club he never played for, rather than, Via Arteta, to Arsenal, a club he did play for, and won titles with playing Wengerball, and then to Wenger, a manager he did play under, and won titles with playing Wengerball.

    Look, I know it’s a small thing but why ?

    That Arsenal goal had Wengers Arsenal written all over it, yet Keown seems to make a deliberate effort not to mention such an obvious connection, a connection you would of thought would of given him pleasure to make.

    Obviously not.

    It makes you wonder, is it actually illegal to refer to Wenger in anything other than negative terms ?

  29. All I can say is my wife has no interest in football whatsoever and even she can’t believe the bias by the commentators and the Refs. It’s that blatant

  30. markyb

    I have said on here many times I get the same feed back regarding our media treatment from my friends that support Liverpool, Man Utd, West Ham and Crystal Palace. Not all of course, but enough to convince me it is not our imagination or paranoia.

    Chelsea fans, who unfortunately are many given where I live, are a different kettle of fish. All I will say is they are a breed unto themselves.

    Many of these guys also think our fans (The AAA types) are literally made.

    Now obviously I cannot prove any of this but all I can say it’s true.

    Not so much about refereeing because as I have intimated elsewhere recently, most fans tend to believe it is they that get the rough end of refereeing and VAR, but unlike Untold they haven’t correlated all the statistics we have.

    They also tend towards one of the 2 common stereo typical views when it comes to refs and that is that either ‘it all evens out in the end’ or all the ‘big clubs’ get favoured.

  31. I forgot to mention Spurs fans too, who in my experience live in a far more realistic and grounded World when it comes to their own, team than the media do, and are always talk to me in extremely balanced way when discussing our teams relative achievements.

    Unlike a certain journalist who lamented the departure of Pochettino on the basis he had spearheaded the Tottenham ‘revolution’, they tended to be of the view ‘he had to go’.

    ‘We were going backwards’ and at the end of the day ‘we won nothing’.

    A point the media, or at least that particular journalist, seems to of totally missed.
