Leicester v Arsenal: the team

By Bulldog Drummond

Sorry this is so late, and we are almost at the moment when the team will be announced, but here’s the guesswork of the day

The Independent has

Raya,

Timber, Saliba, Gabriel, Lewis-Skelly,

Partey, Rice, Odegaard,

Nwaneri, Sterling, Trossard.

The Standard offers

Raya;

Timber, Saliba, Gabriel, Lewis-Skelly;

Odegaard, Partey, Rice;

Nwaneri, Trossard, Sterling

Now if you are particularly sharp you will notice that the only difference is the placement of the forward line, and that seems to be the general opinion everywhere.

But there is a lot more to read in the four articles published before this one (see the top of the page), and it is still the opinion in the rather disorganised Untold office this morning that Arsenal will indeed win.  And quite possibly win rather well.

But I should add that Football London also gave us a full travelling squad (they must have been standing by the bus as it left…

Goalkeepers: David Raya, Neto

Defenders: Jurrien Timber, Riccardo Calafiori, Oleksandr Zinchenko, William Saliba, Gabriel Magalhaes, Jakub Kiwior, Myles Lewis-Skelly.

Midfielders: Martin Odegaard (capt), Jorginho, Thomas Partey, Mikel Merino, Declan Rice, Ethan Nwaneri.

Attackers: Raheem Sterling, Leandro Trossard, Leandro Trossard, Khayon Edwards, Nathan Butler-Oyedeji.

  1. This referee is dangerous.

No big calls yet, but so far every 50/50 has gone Leicester’s way, which suggests the same will happen when a big call does come.

  2. Adrian Clarke on Arsenal.com

“We need to score a goal here to take the referee out of the equation”

How the f*** can it be like that in professional sport.

  3. Indeed Nitram the ref gave every 50/50 in favour of Leicester. Goot that Merino cancelled him out in the end. Two well taken goals from a player who has never played as a striker. But he can score goals. I think that is 4 already for him?

    Karma!!!

In the build up to our first goal there was a clear foul on Timber. Okay, we played on but the ref hadn’t played an advantage he had simply waved away yet another foul.

There were 2 fouls in the minute before our second goal. Timber was pulled over towards the corner flag, the Trossard was fouled around our box. Both waved away.

    Karma!!!

  5. Job done. While it was a bit helter skelter from Arsenal, they found a way to win. The two youngsters were again brilliant. Lewis-Skelly with the goal line stop and Nwaneri with the assist for the first goal. Merino showed nice awareness and positioning for both his goals. I hope he can hold the place while Havertz is out because it seems Sterling just can’t do the job anymore.

And the unbeaten streak in the league continues. I haven’t seen mention of that in the media. No surprise there.

Another PGMOL ref another set of rules. Can some one define a foul for me? I’m not being facetious. Arsenal players were thrown to the ground with both hands, no call. Tripping right before the ref’s eyes. The kick on Trossard was pretty nasty. Arsenal got away with a few as well. Strange performance by this referee.

“The two youngsters were again brilliant.”

Absolutely. To have one player of real quality to break through, but to have 2 is remarkable.

” Sterling just can’t do the job anymore.”

Alas it appears so, BUT I am not going to give up on him just yet.

I’m hanging my hat on confidence, or rather lack of. I think all of us know what it’s like. You lose confidence. You try too hard. You are ‘desperate’. Hence the eternal straying offside. Snatching at chances.

I’m just hoping he scores a goal, be it a Worldy or a bobbler off the shin. Then see what happens.

I hope I’m right because we are going to need him.

As for the ref, bad and biased. No wonder the rest of the World look up to us!

  7. @GOONER72 like you I would to know what a foul is. Most refs I see are so inconsistent as to make the game unwatchable.

  8. I agree about the ref. He ignored several fouls on our players. Trossard, in particular was kicked all over the place.

Jorginho yellow card immediately followed a blatant Leicester foul which was not given. – therefore in a situation which should not have occurred.

Congratulations to the team for a resolute performance against an effective defence.

  9. John L,
Good call on the Leicester defence. They may be near the bottom but the the defenders set up well and held the line. Glad to see nasty old Vardy could do nothing with ours.

  10. Fotmob’s verdict on today’s match : Saved by a late brace from unlikely match winner Merino,Arsenal beat lowly Leicester City 2-0 … A display as dismal as the Murky weather … scappy match”
Now that’s what I call cutting edge commentary and now Arsenal are being held responsible for bad weather too?!? 😭😭 In their minute by minute commentary just before Merino made it 1-0 they brought Opta stats to bear which stated it will end in a draw .🤣😭🤣😭 .
If we took this lot seriously the Samaritans would be overloaded with work talking us down from parapets because we only won 2-0 the weather which we control even in distant Leicester wasn’t up to snuff and the reporters that were sober enough were bored . Well boo hoo 🤣😭 .
Meanwhile that 20 goals a season guaranteed goal machine Isak was nowhere to be seen as his black and white deckchair team got flattened 4-0 .

    Great post mate.

“Meanwhile that 20 goals a season guaranteed goal machine Isak was nowhere to be seen as his black and white deckchair team got flattened 4-0 ”

Well, this is what happens when you are too reliant on a ‘prolific number 9’.

Actually, what you need is a prolific team.

    Newcastle scored 41 (GD +9)

    Arsenal scored 51 (GD +29)

Despite rumours to the contrary it’s a team game.

  12. “Arsenal paying price for not buying a striker” – the words of Mr. Alan Shearer.

He is the man who was an embarrassing failure as a manager. His main recent achievement is the ability to talk even more sh.te than Carragher and Neville.

  13. Nitram, thanks guv’nor , The critics all seem to have a microphone and/or a huge audience waiting on their every word. I expect the likes of all those failed managers in studios up and down the country to carry on in a similar way to their reaction regarding Leicester’s title win. If we were to win the league they’d all be in denial yet at the same time demanding Arsenal go on to win again but nothing less than 104 points and 200 goals will be good enough. Their arrogant views may fool a lot of people but here we know differently . So I’d like to thank Untold Arsenal for all their hard work and dedication to finding truth.

  14. We were entertained with the compltete Sterling repertoire today:-
Running head down into his marker
    Turning into a man
Running the ball out of play
    Trod on the ball
We first had Barrott at Luton last season when he was determined not to be seen to favour the “big team” (I quote).
Regarding the match act Goodison on Wednesday Mr Slot (and his team) showed their true colours when things didn’t go their way.
Is it any coincidence that yet again Mr Oliver is at the centre of controversy. He ought to watch Clement Turpin’s handling of the
Manchester City Real Madrid match in order to learn how to referee a match with unassuming authority without the need to administer
    any cautions

  15. I spend a lot of my time listening to BBC radio 4 and from time to time Radio 3 because I like classical music and sometimes I listen to Radio 5 news.
I hear the thoughts and observations of intelligent people. I am grateful to the BBC for the these programs.

Why o why, when it comes to football they supply chickens pecking at anything they see with no idea what it is they see and without an intelligent thought among them.

Unfortunately when it comes to football the BBC is not the only medium to use chickens to peck on and on about football and not knowing what they are pecking at.

  16. By my somewhat crude estimation, Leicester were being awarded 70% of the free-kicks for committing 70% of the fouls. Barrott must have been taking lessons from Oliver/Taylor/Hooper.

Speaking of Hooper, why was Konate allowed to remain on the pitch after committing at least 3 yellow card offences? Why wasn’t Jota yellow-carded after diving to try and win a penalty. I couldn’t see any contact at all. I seem to remember Jota doing the same against Newcastle at the beginning of 2024.

And speaking of officials, it was quite refreshing to see an unbiased refereeing performance from Stacey Fullicks in only her second appointment to an Arsenal WSL match in the 5-0 demolition of Spurs.

Regarding Kanote, as I said at the time:

Kanote does a pull on the Wolves player.

By the letter of the law an Automatic yellow.

He then immediately kicks the ball away.

By the letter of the law an Automatic yellow.

    Gets ONE yellow.

Seems only Arsenal have to face The Letter Of the Law.

In that one incident fairly early on he should of seen a red, and that’s without any of the other offences.

He actually got his Yellow Card for kicking the ball away, so in effect he didn’t get punished AT ALL for all the fouls.
