The Sun says Arsenal fans are revolting, but actually the prospects are wonderful

By Tony Attwood

In fact virtually everything and everyone is revolting for the Sun, but in this case they have run the headline, “ARSENAL fans demanded that Gabriel Martinelli be sold at HALF-TIME of their clash against Villarreal.”    In fact what they mean is that a few Arsenal fans who were not at the match made that rather childish and impractical demand, which is hardly the same thing.

And it is worth thinking about this for a moment, not just in relation to Martinelli, but also to the Sun and Arsenal.

For we should remember that The Sun newspaper can deliver positive commentaries as with their headline at the momentOver the Roon “ which is followed by the pronouncement that “Wayne Rooney’s son Kai, 15, jumps THREE age groups as he’s called up to Man Utd U19s pre-season tour.”

But there is a second Arsenal headline on their home page at the moment I write this, which reads, “Arsenal 2 Villarreal 3:  Gyokeres upstaged by £72m Gunners flop on Emirates Stadium bow.”

So now we have the story that Arsenal spent a fortune on a player who is a flop (which is true – but is also true for every other club on occasion), but also made a flop out of a player who is now a star elsewhere (which is not quite true as in their 12 seasons since promotion they have finishd between 14th (once) and 4th (once) in the league.

Their exact comment is “So while we all expected an expensive signing by Arsenal to score, you would not have had any money on it being £72m Arsenal flop Pepe.”

Yet when Pepe was at Arsenal, the Sun was notorious for running a whole series of anti-Pepe articles telling him to get out of Arsenal as fast as he could while suggesting with no evidence that Pepe was quite happy to stay at the club and take his salary without playing.   Now he is the hero because, of course, he has just played against Arsenal.

Meanwhile, elsewhere, amidst the celebrations for Rooney’s son, the fact is that even TNT Sports noticed that “there was yet another shining moment for starlet Max Dowman. The 15-year-old won another penalty for his side as he continues to impress and potentially force his way into Mikel Arteta’s plans for this season.”

But really it was pretty hard not to notice how good Max Dowman was; and in fact you’d have to be pretty ignorant of football in general (or a journalist, or both) not to take on board the fact that apart from Max Dowman, Arsenal also have Myles Lewis-Skelly (26 starts, 13 games as sub last season) and Ethan Nwaneri (16 starts, 21 sub appearances nad nine goals last campaign) who each make pretty amazing stories – although of course not for today’s media.

Yet the fact is that Arsenal are bringing in these amazing young players who not only offer more and more to the club, but also are English, and therefore that helps with the rules about homegrown players.  Plus, they are under 21, which helps Arsenal develop and maintain a bigger squad since they don’t count in the list of 25 registered players.  And beyond all that, we now have Max Dowman as well.

It is, of course, quite possible that another club – or maybe even Arsenal in the past- have actually exceeded this achievement in terms of English players coming through the ranks and joining the first team at very young ages, but even so, you might still think it was quite a story.

The Home Grown players rule can be a problem for many clubs, with at least seven of the 25 players on the club list counting as homegrown.    Of course these Arsenal youngsters don’t yet get onto the list of 25 registered players because the under 21s don’t count – but all being well, in a few years they will be there, and not only helping the club by playing, but also helping keep with that rule that says, ” no more than 17 players who do not fulfil the Home Grown Playercriteria.”

So a double bonus.   The players are not even on the 25-squad list because they are so young, and even when they hit the age to qualify for the list, they come into that difficult-to-fill homegrown list.

Of course, we don’t have the formal list of players for 2025/6 yet, as the window is still open, but last season’s list of home players was David Raya, Declan Rice. Bukayo Saka, William Saliba, Raheem Sterling, Gabriel Martinelli and Ben White.   Which as you will notice, was only seven players and one of those has gone; the point being we simply didn’t have an eighth English-born or trained player over 21 who could be added to the list.   So we have spaces in that list – and the youngsters are too young to have to think about in this regard.  But if we can keep them at Arsenal, their talent AND their nationality is going to be a real bonus.

  1. You can write what delusional dribble you want. The transfer window has been absolutely shocking thus far.

The team has been severely weakened and only 1 player has been added. We are nowhere near the level to challenge.for the PL or CL.

All other players are just replacements. Is Norgaard and Zubimendi better than Jorginho and Party….not in a million years. We will once again struggle.in midfield becausse the balance is not right at all. Arteta keeps buying functional DMs rather than flair players. Norgaard is water carrier and Xubimendi is too slow.amd lacks physicality for PL.

Madueke only makes sense as Saka back up.
Mosquera is as Saliba back up.

    Kepa wont affect first team.

    Only Gyokeres had been added.

Its been another extremely disappointing window and shows clearly why Arteta is not the manager to lead us to the PL and CL. The owners.must sell Arsenal.as they are failures as owners in everyway. Their tenure has been categorized by failure and lack of elite.mentality. We have become another Spurs basically.under this ownership. Its disgusting and it’s websites.like this thst continue.to propagate this nonsense.

For.this window minimally we need Eze and Leao/Lookman at least more.to compete.

Sell.Havertz and Jesus and Fabio and Lakonga and Zinchneko and bring in another top striker as well and one other player.

Like I said the.mentality is not elite at all in anyway

  2. “Free” I think there is an inteesting point here that you are making. It seems to me that you are saying that Untold’s view is wrong – and that is fair enough; you can say that. But then you also say that Arsenal’s management’s entire view is wrong – that is to say the view of Arteta and those working with him and the directors of the club who accept his views, and fund his policies, is completely wrong.

Contrary to this you argue that you are right and that the players Arsenal have brought in are not good enough.

But what I don’t get is twofold. First how you know this, and how the management of Arsenal don’t. Second why you think that the owners of Arsenal allow Arteta to continue on what you consider to be this most stupid path, when it is their money that is at stake.

After all if you are right, Arsenal will sink to mid-table this season and the value of the club, and of its players will decline dramatically. So how come you can see this possibility but not only the menagement but also the directorate of the club, can’t.

It surely is a question worth answering – not least because it is the directors who are going to lose money as their shares become worth less and less because of the failure of Arsenal that you predict. I’d be glad to know your answer to this.

  3. Are Norgaard and Zubimendi better than Partey and Jorginho ?
Free asks , the answer is we don’t know . Jorginho was in my mind a consummate professional but limited in the amount of minutes he could play and Partey blew hot and cold , some times effective but often misplaced passes and did not follow his man and got drawn out of position as well.
I would feel happier should Kepa play than Neto , it is quite possible that Hein will leave and Setford is not ready for long periods.
Mosquera has come in because of the possibility of firstly Kiwior leaving and also Real Madrid’s media team are trying to unsettle Saliba.
Madueke ? back up for Saka ? maybe or Martinelli who is fast becoming the modern day Jon Sammels if you read around the more radical sites and Trossard is hawking himself around for one last pay day.
The players that he mentions to sell are all on the market already except Jesus who will not be fit to play until the January window.
Lastly he wants to buy Eze , Leao or possibly Lookman ,no doubt names he has seen on News Now but we are already a little over populated in the Middle of the park with 6 players to occupy the 3 spots should we continue to play with two wingers staying wide and i am not including Dowman..
The basis of this window is to give us a squad that can compete in the domestic cups and also to cover for injury without dropping standard . We have bought in Gyokeres but now we have to work out the system that will get the best from him.

  4. Free.
Contrary to your nom de guarre you are not free thinking ….you come here with all the vile that you are reading from all these click bait websites and lecture us about Arsenal.
Why cant you say something new that we have not heard before maybe we can see that you are onto something, otherwise you are not “free thinking”

  5. @ Free

Just so I can assess the credibility I should attach to your hypothesis, I think it would help if you said exactly when you gained your professional coaching qualifications and for which top clubs you’ve worked. Many thanks in advance.
