Arsenal’s astonishing transfer window. 2 players being paid not to play.

By Sir Hardly Anyone.

Astonishing? well yes.  We need to get rid of two senior players in order just to get down to 25 before we start bringing anyone else in, otherwise we will be left with players we can’t get rid of and will have to pay.

Guendouzi has gone, but he is not in the “25” calculations as he is under 21 by FA rules.  And yet apparently Arsenal are about to buy Thomas Partey.  But the window closes tonight, so that would leave us three players over.

So there is little about clearing the squad to reduce by two to get to 25 and then reduce for the incoming Partey.  That is three players we need to get rid of.  Torreria is the only one being mentioned, so we are again back to having two players too many.

  1. Doesn’t the 17 non home grown limit apply only to PL, so the Euro squad can give game time to the surplus 3?

And can the names be changed in January? And, as a consequence, can’t Mustafi be discounted until then due to injury?

  2. SKY Sports reckon we’ve met the £45M release clause for Party. Hmmm. I’ll believe it when I see it and if I see it I wont believe it.

  3. SKY Sports keep telling me what a wonderful transfer window Spurs have had. Harry Redknapp reckons they could win the Premiership. 🤣🤣🤣

I’ve lost count of how many wonderful transfer windows Spurs have had. I’ve lost count of how many times I’ve heard this bo!!ocks and how many years is it now. Honestly.

Does anyone take anything that guy says seriously

  5. We have now confirmed the signing of Thomas Partey.

Welcome to the best football club in the World.

  6. Some people on Sky Sports do talk shite.

Whos had a good transfer window ?

Well apparently it’s the ‘well run clubs’ that get their business done early like, you’ve guessed it Spurs.

Well obviously the fact that Partey was signed at the last minute means he’s not as good a player as he would of been had we signed him 3 weeks ago. What a ridiculous thing to say.

  7. Robinho, Ashley Cole, Tevez, Berbatov, Rooney, all deadline day signings, all obviously not as good as they could of been had they been bought 3 weeks earlier.

Honestly these guys get paid to talk that crap.

  8. Just cannot believe the negativity that the media heap on the Arsenal. Hearing crap on how we waited till the last possibly moment to buy Thomas Partey , while Man Utd did a jolly good job of landing free agent Edinson Cavani !

  9. i find:
18 NHG – leno, rünarsson, soares, tierney, kolasinac, mari, luiz, gabriel, mustafi, sokratis, xhaka, pépé, ceballos, partey, lacazette, özil, aubameyang, willian
5HG: macey, bellerin, chambers, holding, mniles
7U21: saliba, saka, willock, nketiah, smithrowe, nelson, martinelli
so, that’d be “only” one player needing to be left out (it would be one too many), wouldn’t it?
i have a feeling mesut’ll be the one, so much so that the blame will be put on those who were in charge “before” …

  10. If they miss ozil out then they are showing that the way he is being treated is pure malice.

It makes no sense, financially or otherwise to miss out the player with the highest wages and potentially a regular match winner.

The longer this nonsense continues the more thinking people will consider that there are serious problems amongst the people running the club.

  11. Brickfields Gunners

“Just cannot believe the negativity that the media heap on the Arsenal”. I know it’s absolutely ridiculous. As I said last night, we get the biggest deal of the night over the line at the last minute, as many clubs have done over the years, including all the ‘big’ clubs as I showed with a few of the biggest deadline day deals above. Now to be fair SKY didn’t criticise us overtly but they had a backhanded pop at us by saying “all the ‘well run’ clubs get their deals done early”. No they don’t.

But we all know whatever we do we get it in the neck. If we don’t buy on the last day we’re tight, unambitious blahdy blah. When we do we’re panic buying or (by inference) badly run.

As I’ve said before I don’t buy the papers because of the eternal negativity but as we’re talking about it I thought I’d have a look around and found this from the Mirror.

“Atletico Madrid are reportedly furious with Arsenal’s handling of the Thomas Partey deal and their working relationship is “irreparable”. The Gunners completed a £110million deal for the Ghanaian on deadline day, triggering the £52.5m release clause written into his contract. Arsenal also agreed to pay the midfielder a staggering £260,000-a-week for four years and an additional £2.5m up front as a signing-on fee. Finally, Partey’s agent also received 10 per cent commission on the deal. But Arsenal failed to give Atletico adequate notice before triggering Partey’s release clause, which saw them bypass having to enter into negotiations with the Spanish club.”

Jeez, could they paint it all in a more negative light!

As for Atletico getting all uppity. Tough. They are the ones who wanted to play hard ball, from the start saying they will not negotiate. Fine. That’s their prerogative, as it is ours to play hard ball and test their resolve by waiting to the last minute. In the end they held out and we had to pay in full. Again, fine. That’s how these things work. If you want to play tough don’t cry if you get a bloody nose.

Anyway, he seems to be a great player, obviously not as great as he would of been had we bought him 3 weeks early, but still I doubt he’s gone down hill that much just because he was bought at the last minute.

  12. Great that Thomas Partey is here.

I couldn’t have wished for any other unless Patrick Vieira was still 25.

I thought the transfer deadline in the EPL was October 16 – time enough to get our NHB senior players to 17.

I heard Everton was interested in Skoratis…who knows what may happen to Mustafi.

And now that Arteta has balanced our defensive structure, who says Ozil won’t be brought back?

  13. @Nitram,

there was a time when Arsenal was lambasted for not being able to play hardball…
Funny that now that they are doing it, they get hung for it.

From what I read, they’ve been after Partey for quite a long time, and decided enough is enough, we need the guy.
And the financial issues had been settled a long time ago between Arsenal and Partey.

So Athletico get the maximum they could hope for. And they get Torreira as well. How is that irreparable ?

As said them scribblers are just looking for ways to make Arsenal look bad

  14. Chris

As I mentioned earlier, following Arsenals last minute deal for Thomas Party SKY Sport intimated that ‘Well Run Clubs’ get/got there business done early, such as, well Spurs of course, Chelsea and Man City, Everton etc. So is that true or is it just an excuse to have a veiled pop at Arsenal? Well you can make up your own mind because here is a list of key last day deals covering just the last 3 summer transfer windows.

Premier League Deadline Day deals 2019:

David Luiz – Paris Saint-Germain to Chelsea, three-year deal
Moussa Sissoko – Newcastle to Tottenham, £30m five-year deal
Pau Lopez – Espanyol to Tottenham, season loan
    Georges-Kevin Nkoudou – Marseille to Tottenham, £11m
Marcos Alonso – Fiorentina to Chelsea, £24m

Premier League Deadline Day Deals 2018:

Andre Gomes – Barcelona to Everton – season-long loan
Mateo Kovacic – Real Madrid to Chelsea – season-long loan
Bernard – free agent to Everton
Daniel Arzani – Melbourne City to Manchester City – undisclosed

Premier League Deadline Day Deals 2017:

Danny Drinkwater – Leicester to Chelsea – £35m
Davide Zappacosta – Torino to Chelsea – undisclosed
Fernando Llorente – Swansea to Tottenham – undisclosed
Aleksandar Dragovic – Bayer Leverkusen to Leicester – season-long loan
Serge Aurier – Paris Saint-Germain to Tottenham – undisclosed
Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain – Arsenal to Liverpool – undisclosed
Dennis Adeniran – Fulham to Everton – undisclosed Fee

    That’s:

    Spurs 5 Deadline Day Deals

    Chelsea 5 Deadline Day Deals

    Everton 3 Deadline Day Deals

Man City, Liverpool and Liecster 1 apiece respectively.

Obviously there are many many more from across all clubs, but as far as I could see on the lists I looked at (courtesy of SKY Sports web site), and not that it matters, Arsenal didn’t make a single deadline day deal over those last 3 years. I don’t remember us being called a well run club on the back of that particular fact.

So it seems all’s well and good with deadline day deals depending on who you are.

I know it’s all a bit of something and nothing but I’m just trying to show how these guys make wildly different interpretations of the same events simply depending on who they want to praise and who they want to criticise.

  15. Mo Elneny should have been on my NHG list, so that’s 19, of which 2 have to be left out.
The more I think about it, the more convinced I am – as dejected as I might feel about it – that Mesut’ll be one of the two. Such an artist – what a shame. The other might be Sokratis, since we’re not short of CBs (Holding, Gabriel, (Tierney), Chambers, Mustafi, Luiz, (Kolasinac), Saliba, Mari)
Weird transfer window indeed, and weird way to make business, all the more so since – and though I wish Partey well, of course – I don’t understand what had gone so wrong about Torreira, not to mention the fact that Ainsley could have done great in the very spot which will be Partey’s, provided he were given the opportunity, of course.
Well, I’m very happy this transfer nonsense is over and done with, so we might focus on the good job Arteta’s been doing … but with all this money wasted (I can’t say I’m in awe of the Soares/Mari (after Gabriel’s signing)/Willian (clogging the space for Reiss/Emil) deals), well I can’t help but think of AW right now.
At least, Partey’s a good player, even though I think €50m for a 28-y-o DM is an awful lot, but with Partey-Xhaka, we might have the closest partnership to Vieira-Petit we’ve had in years. Only time will tell.

  16. jjgsol
The Ozil situation is indeed strange given that he played every game for Arteta before lockdown and then after lockdown not even making the squads. He didn’t suddenly become a bad player over that short period.
That indicates that his absence is not playing ability or attitude related but some other reason, probably on instruction from higher up related to him upsetting China.
We know that Ozils public support for the Uighur Muslims persecution in China infuriated the Chinese authorities and I suspect that his exclusion is related to this rather than any playing or form/attitude issues.
By excluding Ozil I think Arsenal FC, afraid of losing income from what is a vast potential market, are attempting to get back into China’s good books.
Could be wrong but that’s how I see it.

  17. Nitram
You should of heard A Durham (with his pet monkey Darren Gough giggling in the background) in full flow mocking Arsenal yesterday. Every time the potential Partey or Guendouzi transfers came up we got the ‘airplane on the runway but never takes off just like when we tried to sign Higuain a few years ago’ to ‘Guendouzi was supposed to be the future Arsenal captain now they can’t get rid of him quick enough’ nonsense. They even replayed old clips from Arsenal supporters phoning in saying how great he was and how he would be a legend one day, all accompanied by hoots of laughter.
All done in a sneering, piss taking tone of voice from Durham and Gough designed to portray Arsenal and its supporters as a bunch of stupid and incompetent idiots.
Arsenal are the perpetual ‘butt of a joke’ as far as Talk Sport and Durham in particular are concerned and it’s a disgrace. No amount of mockery directed at Arsenal is enough for the malicious Durham.
Of course all other transfer stories involving other clubs were treated with all due seriousness and respect with none of the ridicule that Arsenal got.

  18. Mick Shelley.

You are most probably correct about ozil and if you are it reflects so badly on the club.

Mari is not likelyto be really fit until January anyway, so he can be missed out.

Drop ozil and the message is clear that money is more important than playing football and behaving decently.

Wenger’s legacy will be well and truly lost.

  19. mick shelly

What annoys me is ex and even current Arsenal players/staff contribute to than pile of shite. That is an insult to me and every other Arsenal fan. Nobody to do with Arsenal, past or present, who has any respect for their fans should go near that station.

What galls me is, as a SKY subscriber I contribute to those brainless idiots wages.

  20. The Independent are joining in the anti Arsenal propaganda now.
They could have written something positive like ‘What a really good signing, well done Arsenal’ but no, they come up with this headline….

‘Thomas Partey warned against joining Arsenal by his own international coach before transfer deadline day move’

This is old news from two months ago, why the need to dredge it up now?

  21. I’ve just had a look around:

Saint-Etienne reignite feud with Arsenal as they blame them for allowing William Saliba’s proposed loan move to fall through despite having a deal agreed ‘long before the transfer window closed’

Diego Simeone and Atletico Madrid left FURIOUS after Arsenal didn’t tell them they would activate Thomas Partey’s £45m release clause… until it was triggered just 32 minutes before the deadline, wrecking their midfield plans

A-listers fight to save Gunnersaurus! Holly Willoughby and Jack Whitehall join Piers Morgan to rally support for the ‘hero’ mascot after he’s sacked by Arsenal… and fans raise thousands to stop his ‘extinction’

We have a good transfer window and still the negativity is piled on.
