Arsenal Women v Okzhetpes – preview

by Andrew Crawshaw

Arsenal Women commence their Champions League campaign against Okzetpes on Wednesday morning in Moscow.  Our opponents qualified by coming third in the Kazakhstani league.

The Official UEFA website has the following Players listed:-

Arsenal

Goalkeepers – 1 Zinsberger (Austria), 18 Williams (Australia), 24 Stenson (England) and at 28 17 year old Cull (Eng)

Defenders – 3 Wubben-Moy (Eng), 4 Patten (Eng), 5 Beattie Scotland), 6 Williamson (Eng), 7 Catley (Aus), 16 Maritz (Switzerland), 20 Boye Sørensen (Denmark), 22 Schnaderbeck (Aut) and 29 Goldie (Eng)

Midfielders – 8 Nobbs (Eng), 10 Little (Sco), 12 Maanum (Norway) and 13 Wälti (Swi)

Forwards – 9 Mead (Eng), 11 Miedema (Netherland), 14 Parris (Eng), 15 McCabe (Ireland), 19 Foord (Aus) and 23 Iwabuchi (Japan)

Stenson hasn’t featured in the match day squads for our pre-season games and may still not be fully match fit following her thumb injury which affected her for much of last season.

Jordan Nobbs ended up with ankle ligament problems following an overly robust challenge in the Chelsea gave and is out for a while yet although she is pictured in full kit in Moscow

I understand that Leah Williamson hasn’t travelled to Moscow.

Our Australian trio, Williams, Catley and Foord have been back with the squad since the weekend following their Olympic exploits, all of the others were back a day or two earlier.  They might be able to play but are unlikely to feature from the start.

Okzepetes (all players from Kazakhstan unless noted)

Goalkeepers – 1 Sharifova (Azerbijan), 16 Khokhlova, 99 Orazbekova

Defenders – 4 Kamdem (Cameroon), 5 Mukashova, 7 Kozieva, 11 Kuztay, 21 Prokhorova, 23 Vlassova, 27 Khachatryan (Armenia)

Midfielders – 8 Kirgizbaeva, 17 Satygaliyeva, 19 Amangeldy, 24 Aitmukanova, 25 Karazhanover, 77 Mbengono (Cameroon)

Forwards – 9 Manga (Cameroon), 10 Orynbassarova

Predicted Arsenal team

Zinsberger

Patten, Wubben-Moy, Boye Sørensen, McCabe

Wälti, Little, Maanum,

Iwabuchi, Miedema, Mead

This is a match that Arsenal should win comfortably, but our players are still finding their feet following the Olympics and also getting used to a new coach so I am not expecting the match to be plain sailing.  There will also be new players integrating into the system so a hiccup or two along the way should be expected.

Kick off time is 11:00.

The UEFA official media partner is DAZN and for this and next season all matches for the later stages are to be shown live via the DAZN YouTube channel.  I am not certain if they are broadcasting this phase of the tournament but it will be worth checking. There is also a possibility that arsenal.com may have a live stream or that you will be able to pick up the Russian stream from the Moscow Saipan Stadium.

The winner will play the winner of PSV Eindhoven and Lokomotive Moscow on Saturday.  The Winner of that match goes to a two legged round two match in early September to qualify for the group stage of the tournament.
