The decline since Mr Wenger: those who forced him out want to do it again!!!!!!

By Dr Billy “the dog” McGraw, senior psychiatrist at the University College Hospital of the North Circular Road.

If you supported the removal of Arsene Wenger, if you held up a banner, shouted “Wenger Out!” or simply thought it, then you got what you want.  Mr Wenger left.  So now we are in the world you created.

You have had your way, unless of course you were holding up a banner that said, “Wenger out providing we get in xxxx” (fill in the name of your choice).  If that was you, sorry I didn’t see the banner.  Perhaps you should have made it bigger.  Perhaps I need better glasses.  Probably the latter.

But for the massive majority of bloggers, journalists and those fans with banners it was just “Wenger Out” and if you were part of it, then you got what you asked for.   So let’s see what you’ve got in comparison with what has gone before…

All data taken from the league table on 29 November

Season Position in league Points achieved
2019 8th 18 points
2017 4th 28 points
2016 4th 28 points
2015 4th 27 points
2014 6th 20 points
2013 1st 28 points
2012 7th 21 points
2011 7th 23 points
2010 3rd 29 points

So you got what you wanted and it is worse than it was before.

You must have known what the club would do in the aftermath of Wenger, and with Mr Kroenke as an owner.   But you waved your banner, shouted “Wenger out” and maybe even played along with Radio 5, Talk Sprout, Match of the Day and the rest as they turned up the daily anti-Wengerian rhetoric.

You must have known the danger (unless you are one of those who believe you can prove anything with statistics and therefore the statistics that show that most teams go downhill after a change of manager don’t matter), and yet you went ahead with your campaign to get rid of Wenger.

And if that is not bad enough, you may well be thinking of doing it again.   Yes, having encouraged the club to get Mr Wenger out, and seeing where we are now in the league, and now repeated the trick.

And as and when the next guy after Freddie gives us an even lower number points, I guess you’ll have another go and ask for him to go, for the club to spend millions of pounds getting the manager out and buy new players, and then we’ll do it again.

And meanwhile brilliant players like Martinelli think, “Hell, this is not a good club to be at.  Let’s see who else wants me” (only in Portuguese).

Here’s the simple truth repeated in case you missed it last time… 80% of Premier League managerial replacements result in the team then ending up in a worse position after 16 months than they were when the change was made.

What do you want?  A new manager every 18 months until we find… well what?   Well I guess, another Arsene Wenger.  Except that by the time we do we might be in League One.

Well, yes, another Wenger is what we want.  The manager who turned our club around in two seasons.  But it rarely happens as Arsenal’s history shows. Except we just got rid of the last Wenger.

Of all the tactics available to a club, replacing the manager is one of the most dangerous, and probably the most likely to fail.

And yet newspapers, blogs, radio programmes and TV programmes have repeatedly called for this tactic to be used.  Presumably, the model is do it again and again and again, until it does work.

Good luck with that one.  And you only have to look at the headlines to know why I am saying that.  For Emery had only just gone when we had

Gary Neville slams three ‘uncoachable’ Arsenal players after Unai Emery’s sacking

That was from the Metro and it clearly implied that the whole squad was in such a mess that the next manager will fail.  Shall I run that by you again.   The next manager has failed and he hasn’t even been appointed yet.
Infuriated: Emery made Arsenal staff so angry, report shares shocking reason why

But maybe there is hope – maybe it was just that Emery was such a dolt that the club fell apart and is now in League Two.  He was a terrible man manager.  No one else could ever be this bad.  It will all be fine.  We’ll win every game from now on.

Except that

John Hartson blasts Arsenal boss Freddie Ljungberg after Unai Emery sacking

Yes the Daily Star is quoting that excellent expert full of exptertise who expertly knows all about … well about being an expert.   Freddie is dead in the water and he’s only had the job a few hours.

And then…

The telling stats behind Emery’s downfall at Arsenal

Well yes, it is the BBC that knows a few things about stats… except it was the BBC on the day Mr Emery was sacked that gave us all the biggest load of garbage ever about the paucity of the crowd when it fact it was a management attempt to keep the Germans out that led to them banning their own supporters from buying tickets.

Anyway one thing is clear, Arsenal are going to lose all their start players now that Emery has gone.    Because

Inter Looking At Aubameyang

That is from SempreInter – although hang on I thought the players were all leaving because of Mr Emery and his failure to get the tactics right.  So surely they will all stay now.

Oh dear.  This is going to get confusing.

  1. I think Freddy will do just fine in the short run.

I am optimistic that we will hire a good manager but I am not deluded that our results will turn around incredibly. 4th place is going to be a stretch

Meh…I will be cheering on the Gunners at the weekend…as usual.

  2. Mr Warnock may be available, as well as Mr. Allardyce.

That would please the media, because it would involve an English manager, big, strong, rugged and uncompromising defenders and special coaching in how to rough-up skilful opposing teams.

It might even get our PGMOL opponents to stop picking on us.

  3. Chalk another victory for Generation Snowflake – ‘I want EVERYTHING, I want it NOW, I want it FOREVER,’.
Arsene Wenger brought is 20 + good years and a new stadium, stupid people made him leave. Now the consequences of that are happening, maybe a return to the doldrums for a couple of years will do the club good. At least the fake fans will discover something shiny elsewhere and move on. Good riddance.
I hope the next manager understands he/she is already on borrowed time.
A sad day to be of The Arsenal.

  4. I disagree with some Arsenal supporter’s take on our situation but I won’t attack them over it because at the end of the day, we all want Arsenal to win. I WILL however take umbrage at the continued attacks by the various media outlets on our club. They benefit in three basic ways 1) by making $$$ with their vitriolic and opinionated reports, 2) by helping out a rival team by sowing dissension in our ranks; or 3) through extensive Schadenfreude (glee at our misfortune). Which makes them 1) Cold-hearted; 2) Manipulative; and/or 3) Mean spirited.

    Such sad people.

  5. With Emery gone today from being the Arsenal first team head coach, and Freddie Ljungberg has taken the mantle from him as the club’s interim head coach to lead the Gunners out of the difficult season that they’ve been having so far in the Premier League games this season which has now crept in into their Europa League Cup games. A difficult season’s campaign this season that Arsenal are experiencing mostly in the PL that has forced the club owner, Stan Kroenke to approved the recommendation of the removal of Emery from his job at the club by the club’s trio management board bosses should at least be allowed the breathing space to breath in some air and out by football pundits and the anti-Arsenal media outlets who as soon as the announcement of the leaving of Emery was made by Josh Kroenke on behalf of his father the club owner. It is pathetic when it’s noted some football pundits and the anti-Arsenal media outlets immediately started to undermine the position of Ljungberg the newly appointed Arsenal interim head coach by pundicting on who Arsenal should next appoint as their head coach when a new interim head coach in Ljungberg who is already appointed at the club and working.

But can’t the football pundits and the anti-Arsenal media outlets and blogs at least be patience to wait for sometimes to see if Freddie Ljungberg will turnaround things that are bad around in terms of results in the PL and the ELC that are currently reigning negatively at the Gunners to good results for the club or not before they start to clamour for another new head coach for Arsenal when a new one has interimly been appointed just today? Whose appointment could even be made permanent if he gets it very right at Arsenal in just the next 5 months time this season. Freddie Ljungberg should be aware of the dissenters, the subverters, the disloyals, the underminers and above all the traitors who could be in and outside the club waiting for the slightest of a chance or opportunity to seize it to bring him down at the club. And before he knows what is happening to him, he’s gone out of Arsenal to follow Emery who was forcefully helped out of the club against his wish by the Emery OUT campaigners.

  7. I actually think Freddie might come in and do very decent job, and really put himself in the shop window.
He will know the senior players, the young players, the league, the opponents, the press, the language, and the PGMOL.
I think anyone who wants Arteta is compelled to equally consider Freddie.
There are issues at the club that go neyond the manager, but hope he makes a real go of it, and the players back him.

  8. @Mandy – agree with Freddy’s possibility. Only thing is the position requires a level of diplomacy or the FA will destroy you. Hope he keeps a humble attitude when addressing the PGMOL.

I, however, don’t need to, and I kick their arses for the corrupt, cheating, devious, select bastards that they have proven to be for several years now.

  9. I incorrectly mentioned yesterday that Freddie only has the UEFA-A licence, restricting him to three months as head coach/manager, but the Mail reports that he does in fact have the essential Pro licence which will enable him to continue until the end of the season if necessary. So that’s good. I like the Wilder guy referenced by Menace, but sadly expect the club to go for another European.
