Two different refs in this match when you look at the numbers.

A very good display by the ref in the first half with hardly any mistakes. So his score at the end of the first half was 92.0% and 90.3% (Weighted) Excellent. Only 2 wrong decisions and both teams suffering in equal way of the decisions. One of the decisions should have seen Özil getting booked when he went in against Yacob in a frustrated way because Moss not calling a foul on him seconds before.

I don’t know what was put in the ref’s tea at half time but this was a completely different performance.

Suddenly all floodgates went open and WBA could foul as much as they wanted and Moss only gave half of the fouls. He made it all a bit murky when Beraninho just slipped and gave a foul against Koscielny who was near but didn’t do much that might look like  a foul.

After not giving a card against Özil in the first half he then didn’t give anything against Yacob and Beraninho for persistent fouling in the match and certainly in the second half.

There were a few incidents where Arsenal shouted for a penalty but looking back at the incidents we couldn’t really find 100% evidence that a foul was made (a few more replays from different angles would have been helpful) so we gave the ref the benefit of the doubt.

But with all those missed fouls the score of the ref went down to a dramatically score in the second half of only 48.1% and 40.6% (Weighted).  Disastrous and very inconsistent.

The overall score over the whole 90 minutes was  69.2% and 65.0% (Weighted). So we could say a marginally average performance.

The good thing is that there were no major errors in this match. His first half was near perfect due to correct calls on on nearly all the fouls.

The score for the ref wasn’t helped also with linesman Simon Bennett making two wrong off-sides decisions that involved Giroud. One against Arsenal and one against West Brom.

Overall it was merely an average performance by the referee. This match shows that how refereeing can change in either halves.

5 Replies to “Ref Review Arsenal – WBA”

  1. “Overall it was merely an average performance by the referee”. That’s brilliant in my book, I’d settle for 38 “merely average” games next season without hesitation!!

  2. Goonermikey,

Sadly that’s true. The refereeing this season has been so poor that when a ref gets above 65%-70% we celebrate 🙂 haha.

And this was one of the rare games this season where the ref did not make any major errors. So yeah, more of this please.

  3. It’s always the wrong kind of tea at half time for the refs, but I’d question their breakfasts as well.

Just kick as much as you like and I’ll judge how obvious the foul was, before ignoring it. I’ll try and play advantage (if I think it’ll lead to a dead end), and then I won’t have to book you.

If you’re being over-run, just jump on or charge thier attacking players, then I’ll give a foul against them. (I’ve been practising this for some time).
(Note how I ignored the most obvious 2 handed push of Alexis into the concrete pit. C’mon, as Sanchez dizzily sauntered back onto the field, I had a smile for him and patted his bottom. What more do you want?).

Well done Yacob and Berahino. How very skilful you truly are.

    Karma gonna get ya!

  4. Another very fine and accurate review. Thanks guys.

The problem at half time might have been phone call related rather than something in the beverage!
