The issue of the referee who is against a specific club

Sorry for the delay in posting today – profound technical problems with the internet this end.

By Tony Attwood

I would not normally dream of posting on here a blog or video from a Liverpool supporter.   This is not because of any prejudice – my view is that we all support the clubs we do because of historical accident – I support Arsenal because I was brought up near the ground and my father supported Arsenal, that’s it.  Not because they are by their very nature better than everyone else.  Arsenal is the team that I support.

And of course, others support their clubs.  Some are a bit silly about it in my opinion, claiming that inherently Arsenal are cheats and their club is superior but I can readily pass such people by.  They don’t worry me.

So I let others gett on with their support, but occasionally I do read or listen, and the video below is one that I followed through with much interest, as it is delivered with thought and research, and indeed is far from being a rant.  It is by a Liverpool supporter talking about Michael Oliver as being biased against Liverpool.

Now if you are a regular reader here you will know I have explored the matter of Arsenal and refs in a different way from this, relying more on statistics, and the facts they reveal about the inconsistency of the refereeing approach and the fanatical level of secrecy that surrounds and is inherent within PGMOL.  This is different – this is about one referee and one club – Liverpool.

If you have a strong distaste for Liverpool FC and believe they inherently cheat or have arrangements with refs you might not want to watch and listen, but if you want a broader perspective on how a supporter from another club sees one referee, you might wish to have a listen.

I have not liaised with this supporter but since his piece is freely available on line I do take it as being in the public domain and thus free to be forwarded.

  1. Easy to replicate an attack on a referee when you dont give him an opportunity to really respond. Disgraceful abuse.

  2. @ Pete D

Referees are not allowed to go public. How come you don’t know this?

  3. Coming from a supporter of a club who are morally corrupt from Liverpool getting caught employing ex Manchester City employees and getting them to illegal access Manchester City’s databases, who got it brushed under the carpet by settling it out of court. To Liverpool FC, Liverpool Police and Mayor colluding to violently and criminally assault and terrorise not just one but two of Manchester City’s team buses outside Anfield twice and were never punished by the Football Association or UEFA, not a single person was arrested. Now on both occasions City were aware of what was going to happen prior as it was reported by the media to be pre planned. City asked the Police twice at the last minute to change the route and twice they denied, on both occasions the route was under manned deliberately by the Police. The victims as I call them are sereal actors, they will act the victim every chance they get and have become good at it. They’ll take chaos and disasters their fans cause anywhere in the world and come out of it looking like the victims. Most recently their fans attempted to break in to a match in France if i recall and ended up putting the blame on the Police. In the Heysel Stadium their fans caused the deaths of many Juventus fans if I recall correctly.

There’s no conspiracy here, Oliver doesn’t support City, you ask any City fan, pick anyone. We’re despise the football authorities and have never been favoured by any referee in my 49 year life time. For the last 24 years I’ve repeatedly said to anyone and everyone I could that we were always up against 15 men, not 11.

Liverpool fans call conspiracy every chance they get, every single incident that goes against them they scream like babies at referees. You ask any referee, it’s an intimidation tactic and Liverpool have turned it in to an art.

His conspiracy trying to use City to connect corruption between the UAE and PGMOL is delusional to say the least, he provides ZERO EVIDENCE to back up his accusations. Liverpool have also mastered the art of deflecting attention away from themselves by creating controversy where there is none concerning other clubs.

As a 49 year old Manchester City supporter from a family of Manchester City, Manchester United, Arsenal and Liverpool supporters, I can tell you now that there’s not a single Manchester City fan out there who has a favourite referee. We’re despise always say we need to beat the referee too.

My half Brother and his family are Arsenal supporters, not even he would entertain this nonsense, if and when City have got a bit of luck due to a right call or a wrong call even, it’s been an evening out for all the constant bad calls we get. Since Thaksin bought us out referees have been playing our opponents advantage when and where they could but, we accepted it because we were the better team and usually were good enough to beat the referee. Liverpool on the other hand are the masters of the dark arts, serial cheats and victims.

  4. One of the issuse for me is that the same group of people (mates) who referee games are the same group of people (mates) who operate VAR. There’s more to it than that but we’ve already had an admission from one of those people that they didn’t want to over rule a ‘mate’ when he made a bad decision. The very least we need is an independent group of people operating VAR so that they don’t end up backing up their mates’ bad decision making.

In terms of referee impartiality…well many of you probably my views on that!

  5. It’s good to know that Oliver isn’t just shite against Arsenal, but shite against one other Premier League team and probably 18 others.

  6. There are very few supporters of any club that don’t feel that they are discriminated against by referees in general. The problem lies not on which referee you get for a single match but the frequency that you get them for. Mid table and the lower clubs only see the elite referees when they play top 6 clubs and by their very nature the top teams tend to win and the lower teams feel that things did not go their way.
After my stint in North London , for financial reasons , I now live in East Anglia and it is common place for the supporters of Norwich and Ipswich to say that referees favour the top 6 to their detriment.
However I too think that the PGMOL getting to do games in Saudi or Qatar and being well paid by the ruling class is suspicious especially when those same rulers have large interests in Premier League clubs .
Is this a sign of corruption or simply a signal of the total stupidity of an organisation that leaves itself open to such criticism in the quest for the money that they receive for their efforts.

  7. I recall all those decision’s , and in isolation the media and PIGMOL can ride them but when someone puts them out but together you hope people in authority ( the FA ) will take notice and look into refereeing in general .
Tony would it be worth colluding with the Liverpooh fella and get something rolling , it’s the first sort of back up re referees with a similar view to you and many on Untold that’s been put out on the internet .

  8. Evidence. Statistics.

Where are either to back up this guys accusations?

Just pointing out isolated incidents is just not enough. Everyone can do that.

The Man City fan is the same. He accuses the Liverpool fan of having no evidence then fails to produce any himself to back up his accusations. He says every game they play they feel they are playing 15 men? Why? There are no statistics that back up his theory that referees treat Man City harshly. How do I know? Because we here at Untold HAVE produced the data, many many times, most recently by Mikey.

The 2 most critical factors referees and VAR have control over that can have a significant impact on a match, team or entire season are Red cards, and penalties for and against. These are facts. Not a feeling.

And in both of those parameters Arsenal are, over time, far far more harshly treated than both Liverpool and Man City, as well as all our other immediate rivals.

Yes, of course ALL fans FEEL hard done by at times. And understandably so. That is the nature of being a fan. It’s exactly how I felt. But, rather than just say it and point at a few incidents that backed my ‘feeling’ I researched the data, as have many of us on Untold, and every time the data tells the same story. It Arsenal that get screwed by referees. Not Liverpool. Not Man City. Arsenal.

We get less penalties for. More against. More red cards for.

If you don’t agree, find the stats that prove me wrong. Otherwise your ‘opinion’ alone means very little, if anything at all.

Note: I would put links up to the tons of data produced by untold over the years but posts do not ‘go up’ with multiple links. Maybe you could ask Tony for some direction.

  9. Nitram.
Great job pointing out the facts. And regarding fouls, AFC by a wide margin lead in yellows for “other”, unexplained reasons. I think the category the refs use is ‘playing football whilst wearing an Arsenal shirt’.
    It’s a joke.

  10. @Cityblue7 Spoken like a true 115FC fan. I mean to say that Man City “have never been favoured by any referee”! Are you seriously saying this? What a knob

  11. Right, all supporters of all clubs some with statistical evidence and many with long memories about isolated matches . What is needed is for supporters everywhere of every team to unite for the purpose of getting rid of the present set up . We all need to recognise the need to protect the FA and football league as a product. That could man scrapping the PGMO , employing referees from all over Britain or even the world if you like them let there be no referee overseeing more than two matches per season over a single club , the FA is awash with money and to do this would help eliminate partiality . All this is going over the well established hard work of UA . But surely there’s no way this could be ignored if all football supporters stood together on this.

  12. I thought the video made some good points regarding Oliver’s record with the three teams, and he referred to the related card statistics which appeared on this site last season.

  13. As a neutral fan I can see with my own eyes the absolutely biased refereeing from some officials.

All the fans want is fairness – is this too much for the PIGMOB to provide – it appears so.

I watched a UCL game this week and witnessed another of the “excellent” referees of the PIGMOB be very petty. This was because a player, who had had his shirt pulled 3 times, intimated to the referee that some sort of sanction was called for. The very next decision he made was to call a perfectly good throw in a foul throw because his ego had been hurt. That referee was none other than A Taylor.

I stopped watching at that point because I could see with my own eyes that this person should not bein charge of an U16 game let alone a UCL game.

  14. Seems to be the norm at all levels ,I was only sent off once in my time ,after a run through midfield getting pulled back, thumped in the back and an attempted ankle tap and then the run stopped by a body check . The ref blew up and I said about effing time too.
    Red card. early bath.
    salutary lesson.
