But then the referee awarded a yellow card against Ozil which made no sense at all. Considering the following below there was no way Ozil should have been booked. 1. This was Ozil’s first foul of the game. 2. The foul occurred deep inside Stoke’s Half. There was no promising attack going on by Stoke at that time. 3. There was no dissent, anger or hostility shown by Ozil towards the referee. 4. There no recklessness or serious foul play shown by Ozil towards Pieters. CORRECT FOUL FOR STOKE. 63:09 | Marco Van Ginkel (Stoke) | Mesut Ozil (Arsenal) | Van Ginkel tripped Ozil using his left leg a little outside the Stoke’s penalty area. The referee gave a correct foul.
But this was a fourth foul by Van Ginkel in a period of 60 minutes. With every consecutive foul he was constantly and persistently infringing the laws of the game. Van Ginkel should have been Yellow Carded, but the referee didn’t give him a yellow card. LAW 12, PAGE 127 Persistent Infringement “Referees should be alert at all times to players who persistently infringe the Laws. In particular, they must be aware that, even if a player commits a number of different offences, he must still be cautioned for persistently infringing the Laws.” CORRECT FOUL FOR ARSENAL. Arnautovic looked back again towards Gabriel and raised his right elbow and ATTEMPTED to STRIKE Gabriel again when Gabriel raised his hand to shield/block himself from Arnautovic’s elbow. Arnautovic then fell to the ground holding his face trying to act his way as the victim of the two, even there was no contact by Gabriel to Arnautovic’s face. This should have been foul for Arsenal and yellow card against Arnautovic for Striking and attempting to strike Gabriel twice to prevent him from overtaking. But the referee didn’t give either of these decisions. LAW 12, PAGE 37 Direct Free Kick “A direct free kick is awarded to the opposing team if a player commits any of the following seven offences in a manner considered by the referee to be careless, reckless or using excessive force: • kicks or attempts to kick an opponent • trips or attempts to trip an opponent • jumps at an opponent • charges an opponent • strikes or attempts to strike an opponent • pushes an opponent • tackles an opponent LAW 12, PAGE 119 “Reckless” means that the player has acted with complete disregard to the danger to, or consequences for, his opponent. • A player who plays in a reckless manner must be cautioned” NO FOUL FOR ARSENAL. Pieters used his left hand and GRABBED, HELD and PULLED the shirt of Giroud from the chest in a very firm manner causing Giroud to fall to down to the ground face down. This incident should have been a penalty for Arsenal. But the referee and his assistants failed to give a penalty.
LAW 14, PAGE 45 “A penalty kick is awarded against a team that commits one of the ten offences for which a direct free kick is awarded, inside its own penalty area and while the ball is in play.” LAW 12, PAGE 37 Direct Free Kick “A direct free kick is awarded to the opposing team if a player commits any of the following seven offences in a manner considered by the referee to be careless, reckless or using excessive force: • kicks or attempts to kick an opponent • trips or attempts to trip an opponent • jumps at an opponent • charges an opponent • strikes or attempts to strike an opponent • pushes an opponent • tackles an opponent
“A direct free kick is also awarded to the opposing team if a player commits any of the following three offences: • holds an opponent • spits at an opponent • handles the ball deliberately (except for the goalkeeper within his own penalty area)” Furthermore the incident should also have resulted in a RED CARD against Pieters as he clearly and most obviously denied Giroud a chance to score a goal in to an empty net. But the referee didn’t give a red card. LAW 12, PAGE 40 Sending-off Offences “A player, substitute or substituted player is sent off if he commits any of the following seven offences: • serious foul play • violent conduct • spitting at an opponent or any other person • denying the opposing team a goal or an obvious goalscoring opportunity by deliberately handling the ball (this does not apply to a goalkeeper within his own penalty area) • denying an obvious goalscoring opportunity to an opponent moving towards the player’s goal by an offence punishable by a free kick or a penalty kick • using offensive, insulting or abusive language and/or gestures • receiving a second caution in the same match” NO PENALTY FOR ARSENAL. A very strong performance from referee Moss in the first half. A perfect referee performance till he gave a yellow card against Özil for reasons he only will know but I really couldn’t see any reason why Özil was given a yellow card.
That was the only mistake the reff made in the first half so he got a score well in the 90% and that is what we would like to see. One could say almost a PGMO score this time.
The second half was a different story. The ref didn’t have to make many decisions but he made a few mistakes. And the fewer mistakes you have to make the more weight each mistake has.
The incident between Arnautovic and Gabriel was maybe difficicult to see for the ref. But it was clear to see that Arnautovic twice attempted to stop Gabriel overtaking him by putting his elbow in front of Gabriel and then Gabriel used his hand to push Arnautovic away. Arnautovic falling on the floor for dead. We have seen Arnautovic doing some nasty things last season so the way he behaved certainly didn’t do any good to his reputation.
Moss let it all go (as he probably didn’t see it) but this was another incident where the video replay could have helped the ref out and make the correct decision.
And the last big decisions the ref had to make and miss was the penalty foul on Giroud. He was pulled down by his shirt when trying to score his second goal. The ref maybe couldn’t see it from his angle but again a good case where the video ref could have given som help to the ref.
As a result of these big misses the score dropped considerably in the second half.
But overall looking at the whole 90 minutes we can still see a rather good result from the ref more or less in line with his usual way of refereeing scores from the past seasons.
Petition to stop Gollum’s twin to officiate another Arsenal match
https://www.change.org/p/the-football-association-the-fa-prevent-mike-dean-from-refereeing-another-arsenal-game
A good report.
Overall Moss was poor on the major decisions – really poor – but compared to the retard we had yesterday he was …..well…..an average PGMO performer, but still very unsatisfactory.
Quite like “Gollum” as a handle for Dean.
@dan
Thanks for alerting me to the petition to prevent Mike Dean from refereeing another Arsenal match. I’ve signed. At least we can make our opinion known.
Another great ref review. Shows how even a good refereeing performance can be spoiled by a few key wrong decisions. Just lucky that on this occasion it didn’t make a difference to the final points.
Good report. I’ve signed the petition. Where do we go from here? I’m so gutted by the unsporting evil that is supported by some pundits & media. I really cannot believe these people are allowed to teach our future generations this corrupt version of The Beautiful Game. It is like condoning molestation.
Is there any ref left who will give us a fair crack of the whip? Doesn’t look like…

Was nice to see Bellerin providing sound punditry in the Barcelona-Levante clash earlier this evening. He demonstrates maturity that belies his age, on and off the pitch. Bright future.
