Fouls, Advantages, Cards, and Penalties
Time | Foul by | Foul For | Description & Decision | Points | |
05:13 | Jerome Boateng (Bayern Munich) | Joel Campbell (Arsenal) | Campbell was running with the ball, when he pushed it forward. Boateng came from the side and charged and pushed Campbell with the ball nowhere near. This should have been foul for Arsenal, but was not given.
NO FOUL FOR ARSENAL. |
-1 (FOUL) | |
11:36 | Mesut Ozil (Arsenal) | Monreal delivered a cross and Ozil moved his right arm towards the direction of the ball to score the goal. The referee correctly disallowed the goal, gave a foul and yellow carded Ozil for deliberately handling the ball to score.
LAW 12 FOULS AND MISCONDUCT PAGE 121 Handling the Ball Handling the ball involves a deliberate act of a player making contact with the ball with his hand or arm. The referee must take the following into consideration: • The movement of the hand towards the ball (not the ball towards the hand) • The distance between the opponent and the ball (unexpected ball) • The position of the hand does not necessarily mean that there is an infringement • Touching the ball with an object held in the hand (clothing, shinguard, etc.) counts as an infringement • Hitting the ball with a thrown object (boot, shinguard, etc.) counts as an infringement
Disciplinary sanctions There are circumstances when a caution for unsporting behaviour is required when a player deliberately handles the ball, e.g. when a player: • Deliberately handles the ball to prevent an opponent gaining possession • Attempts to score a goal by deliberately handling the ball
A player is sent off, however, if he prevents a goal or an obvious goalscoring opportunity by deliberately handling the ball. This punishment arises not from the act of the player deliberately handling the ball but from the unacceptable and unfair intervention that prevented a goal being scored.

But the referee then gave Campbell a yellow card. Considering the following below there was no way Campbell should have been booked.
1. The foul occurred in normal wing play. There was no promising attack going on by Bayern Munich at that time. 2. There was no dissent, anger or hostility shown by Campbell towards the referee. 3. There no recklessness or serious foul play shown by Campbell towards Coman.

BELOW IS THE LINK FOR THE “FIFA LAWS OF THE GAME 2015/2016”. ANY LAW OF THE GAME IS DIRECTLY REFERENCED FROM THIS DOCUMENT.
Let us first start with the disallowed goal from Özil. The ref was right according to the laws of the game. Özil moved his hand in the direction of the ball and his deflection made it go over the line. This is not allowed and so the ref was right to cancel it and to give a yellow card against Özil.
But for the rest too many non decisions from the ref that all went against Arsenal. A push on Campbell, a trip on Campbell, a clear foul on Alexis… The Bayern players could do what they want to win the ball back at times.
But at the end of the first half the ref still got a decent score (well… compared to some PL refs) of 73.6% correct decisions and when we put weight on it the score goes up to 76.9%.
In the second half the ref did better at first but then he missed a clear handball from Thiago in the Bayern penalty area. It was in fact an identical situation from the disallowed goal one could say but this time it was a defender that clearly changed the direction of the cross with his arm. This time the 3 officials involved suffered from a case of collective temporary blindness. Now you could argue that it doesn’t matter at the time that much as we were 4-0 down but I disagree.
As goal difference can be a decisive factor at the end of the group stages such mistakes can become very costly for a team, in this case Arsenal. Ad to that that we scored a bit later it suddenly would have been two goals back in a few minutes. And a bit later Giroud was called back for offside when he was level and another chance for Arsenal to possibly score was taken away. I’m not saying we would have taken anything from this match but I am saying that we should have had a slightly different score line at least.
But to be fair the ref also should have booked Per Mertesacker for a clear foul and he even gave a foul against Bayern that wasn’t a foul. So a much more balanced ref in the second half (when the match was played?) than in the first half.
In the second half the score of the ref was 72,2% and when we put weight on it the score goes to 67.8%. So not really brilliant in that period.
When we look at the whole 90 minutes the ref has a score of 72.9% and with weight on it the score goes up to 73.6%. That is of course because of the many goals scored.
So looking back it feels a bit like a ref who was gladly giving anything in favour of the home team on the day till the match was decided and then trying to even things out a bit.
The issue I have with the refusal of Ozils goal is did any of the officials see the incident? I believe they were all unsighted (including the goal line official) & only a mass complaint by Bayern players who didn’t see the incident either resulted in the decision that included a booking for Ozil.
Only two Bayern players could have seen the incident, the one adjacent to Ozil & the goal keeper. The Laws were tiotally abused in that respect.
Although I appreciate the Ozil goal shouldn’t have stood, I hagree with Manace and I do think the card was unnecessary. He was desperately trying to get his shoulder/chest to the ball which was coming in at speed, and the natural thing to do is stretch your arm in that direction trying to get your shoulder/chest to that position. So it wasn’t an intentional hand ball. It’s like jumping for the ball, you naturally spread your arms.
Sorry for the typos….
Andy,
Yes I do agree that the card was harsh but there was enough movement of the arm towards the ball that it just ticks box itself. And yes the referees probably disallowed the goal on the appeals from Bayern Munich players and got a 100/1 fluke right 🙂
