92:06 | Laurent Koscienly (Arsenal) | Arsenal get a corner that is taken short.
Alexis turns and sends in a cross that is headed on by Theo Walcott. At that moment Koscielny and Oxlade-Chamberlain are both onside. There is a Burnley player who tried to stop the cross who plays them onside. Koscielny kicks the ball towards the goal. Oxlade Chamberlain tries to kick the ball but kicks against the foot of Kos at the moment that Kos was having his shot. With the offside doubt out of the way the only reason for the goal to be cancelled could be for handball. But to give a foul for handball the handball has to be deliberate. And this is the key word in this. Did Koscielny deliberately kick the ball against his own arm to score a goal? The answer to that question is: that would be highly unlikely. More so as the fact that he missed his shot was down to another teammate kicking his foot when he took his shot at goal. So everything points at the fact that it wasn’t a deliberate handball and so the ref had no reason to cancel the goal for a deliberate handball. CORRECT GOAL FOR ARSENAL. |

Craig Pawson was the ref for this match. After the match a lot of pundits and specialists came out, having a say about the goal. We have said our thing in the review itself.
The ref didn’t really have a good game. A first clear push in the back of Mustafi was missed. And then he completely misjudged excellent defending work from Mustafi and called it a foul. On the images you can clearly see that it was Vokes who was pulling the shirt of Mustafi and Mustafi cleanly played the ball. Mustafi then made a bit of a show by showing the ref in a very expressive way what had happened. Mustafi should have been booked for this dissent.
The ref then gave a goalkick when a Burnley player touched the ball. And on top of that he signalled an advantage when there was nothing to see. As for the rest it was a rather clean match up to then he had not much decisions to make but missing on a few cost him badly in his score. The fewer decisions you have to make as a ref and then missing a couple cost you.
First half score : 54.5% (non weighted) and 50.0% (Weighted) Poor.
On to the second half.
Walcott was fouled early on just outside the penalty area but the ref let it go. Then when Alexis started a counter for Arsenal he gave the ball to Özil and tried to make a forward run. Marney just ran up to Alexis and with the ball not even in sight he just kicked Alexis and brought him down. The ref signalled an advantage (I can live with that) but he then never came back to the deliberate kick to give a yellow card. Unbelievable! Such a deliberate foul and seeing and just letting it go?
On to the handballs. A Burnley defender clears the ball and Keane who was around 5-6 meters away touched it with his arm and the ball went out and the ref gave a corner. Given the distance between him and where the ball was played and the fact that his hands were away from his body this was a deliberate handball for me and should have been a penalty.
But there was worse to come from the handball front. Because in the last minute Walcott tried to go past Keane (again!) and Keane this time just stuck out his arm and blocked the ball with his hand. And again the ref ignored it. That was a clear penalty foul and should have been a yellow card also.
Add to that the missed elbow from Vokes on Mustafi and the not given red card and you get a poor score.
If I may add that given the handballs that were not given it seemed almost as justice being done when the ball bounced against the hand of Koscielny in to the goal.
Anyway the second half score was: 41.6% (non weighted) and 31.8% (Weighted) Again well below poor even with so less decisions to make.
The final score overall was: 47.8% (non weighted) and 38.2% (Weighted). The total numbers of decisions to make in this match has been way less any match and still the score is very poor.
Bias score 10/2 against Arsenal. 10 decisions against Arsenal and 2 against Burnley.
In short: three wrong major decisions. 1. No red card to Vokes, 2. No handball penalty by Keane. 3. No Handball penalty by Keane again.
A final word about the time wasting. Cech used 24 seconds on average for every goal kick he had to take. Heaton used 34 seconds for his goal kicks on average. The quickest restart by Heaton lasted 30 seconds! In the whole match. He even managed to have one that lasted 40 seconds. And if you then look at the added time of only 2 minutes…. with one head injury where Mustafi made sure he was off quickly…. you ask yourself where did he come up with only 2 minutes of extra time?
So a bad score with not much decisions to make but he managed to miss a lot of them. But the good thing is that at least he got the final decision right.

Oh dear, I was so hoping that I wouldn’t need to resurrect the HALL OF SHAME this season but this is the first entry..
Thanks Walter and Usama.
Great job guys , thanks .
I would, though, like to commend Burnley for not trying to kick us off the park – something that normally is associated with bus parking tactics. As per above, I have seen very few games with so few fouls (awarded or otherwise).
Thanks very much guys, interesting. And the media/WOB said we were the lucky ones!
Thanks for this, clarifies this was a good goal. A second Burnley player, their number 21 who is near the corner kick, also clearly plays both Kos and Ox onside. You wonder why the pundits who have multiple angles of these videos still come to the wrong conclusion..
Thanks for this excellent review, which confirms cheaty things I thought I saw and others I didn’t. That was a Walton/Mason-esque type performance from the ref.
The .gif links are a welcome addition.
Al:
Pundits seem to agree with every ref decision, and refuses to critisise them, in fact, they go out of their way to say that the ref is right, even though he is clearly wrong sometimes.
Thanks Usama and Walter for the review. With your explanations and videos about our goal, I like to say the goal should be credited to Kos.
He and Ox weren’t offside and the handball wasn’t deliberate.
Probably without the ball touching his hand, it may have ended over the bar but I think it’s high time lady luck started smiling in Arsenal`s direction.
I wish our boys safe return without injury.
COYG
The media spent a lot of time discussing the Arsenal goal was it offside it was handball deliberate or not.
Not one mention of Volts elbow or whether Arsenal should have of had 2 penalties seems the honeymoon is over.
Sky may have spent ages deliberating over the goal and who touched it but SKYBET paid out within a minute or two. I learnt this much to my frustration since having suggested that Kos was the most likely player to score with 10 to go, the Chelski fan with whom I was watching had a fiver on it @ 40/1…………..
Excellent report.
Excellent report. What I find interesting is when 89:45 Michael Keane (Burnley) does his hand ball thing his team mates call for a foul or maybe just raise their hands to take attention away from the penalty.
Thanks for the report, they are always very informative.
Regarding the two additional minutes, apart from the time wasting you mentioned in the report, there was also another incident of time wasting, with the ref even indicating that time will be added at the end as a result of the player’s action. I could not believe when the board came up and only showed two minutes.
Sean Dyche also had a little complaint at the end about the time when the goal was scored. What is your take on that? I believe that the corner was called before the two minutes were up, and there should be no complaint. The referee also has a discretion to extend the added time if there were further stoppages in added time.
