Arsenal have met Italian clubs in every European competition they have entered, from the Inter-Cities Fairs Cup in 1970 to last season’s run to the final in Budapest. The record is stronger than most English clubs can claim, and it holds up in Italy as well as it does in London. That history sits behind the way Napoli vs Arsenal odds have been priced for the 2026-27 league phase opener at the Stadio Diego Armando Maradona.
Ties won, ties lost
The record reads better by tie than by single result. Arsenal beat Lazio in the 1970-71 Fairs Cup first round, John Radford scoring both goals in a 2-2 draw in Rome and again in the 2-0 at Highbury. They beat Parma in the 1994 Cup Winners’ Cup final, Alan Smith volleying the only goal in Copenhagen. They knocked out Juventus in a Cup Winners’ Cup semi-final in 1980 and Sampdoria in the same round in 1995, that one on penalties after David Seaman saved three in Genoa.
Juventus went out again in the 2005-06 quarter-final, Milan in the 2007-08 last 16, and Roma on penalties in 2008-09. Against that, Milan won the 1994 European Super Cup over two legs, and Fiorentina won at Wembley in 1999. Since 2000, only one Italian club has removed Arsenal from a European tie.
The three away nights that built the reputation
Paul Vaessen headed a late winner in Turin in April 1980, and Arsenal became the first British side to beat Juventus at home in Europe. On 25 November 2003 they went to the San Siro needing a result and won 5-1 against Inter. Thierry Henry scored twice, Freddie Ljungberg, Robert Pires and Edu added the others, and Arsenal had lost 3-0 to the same opponents at Highbury two months earlier.
The third came on 4 March 2008. After a 0-0 draw at the Emirates, Cesc Fabregas struck from 25 yards on 84 minutes and Emmanuel Adebayor made it 2-0 in stoppage time. Milan had never lost at home to English opposition in European competition before that evening.
The one Italian side to knock them out
Milan did it in February 2012. Kevin-Prince Boateng, Robinho twice and Zlatan Ibrahimovic from the spot gave Milan a 4-0 first-leg lead at the San Siro. Arsenal won the return 3-0 through Laurent Koscielny, a Robin van Persie penalty and Tomas Rosicky, and all three goals arrived inside 43 minutes. They did not score again in the 47 minutes that followed, and went out 4-3.
Which Arsenal players travel well against Serie A
Henry has the best individual record of any Arsenal player against Italian clubs. A hat-trick in a 3-1 win at Roma in November 2002, two more at the San Siro a year later, and the second goal against Juventus in the 2006 quarter-final. Fabregas made his name in that Juventus tie at 18, scoring and setting one up against Patrick Vieira, then won the Milan tie two years later.
Ljungberg scored twice against Lazio at Highbury in October 2000 and again in the 5-1. Van Persie scored both goals in Udine in August 2011 and converted penalties against Roma and Milan. The current squad has already added to that list, and Arsenal’s place in the Champions League favourites market rests partly on an away record in Europe that Italian clubs have rarely dented.
Napoli, and what the head-to-head actually says
Arsenal have played Napoli four times, twice in the 2013-14 Champions League group stage and across both legs of the 2018-19 Europea League quarter final.
The first meeting saw Mesut Ozil and Olivier Giroud score inside 15 minutes in a 2-0 win at the Emirates in October. Napoli won the return 2-0 in December through Gonzalo Higuain and Jose Callejon, and still went out. Borussia Dortmund, Arsenal and Napoli all finished the group on 12 points, and Arsenal came second on the head-to-head record.
During the Europa League quarter final, Arsenal won 3-0 on aggregate from goals by Aaron Ramsay and Kalidou Koulibaly in the first leg and Alexandre Lacazette in the second.
The most recent meeting with an Italian club was Arsenal’s 3-1 win at the San Siro on 20 January 2026 against Inter Milan. Gabriel Jesus scored on 10 and 31 minutes, Petar Sucic replied for Inter, and Viktor Gyokeres finished it on 84. That made seven wins from seven in the league phase, and Arsenal topped the table before losing the final to Paris Saint-Germain on penalties in Budapest on 30 May.
