Who has spent the most, who has gained the most, and which clubs are moribund?

This summer I have been keeping tabs on some of the bigger clubs in Europe and a few other clubs that are interesting in terms of their buying and selling. This page gives the updates as of today 28 June.

Figures from different source always vary, so for consistency I’m using the figures published on the Guardian’s website.

Here are the latest figures for the top six clubs from last season vis a vis their spending thus far. Fairly obviously a plus sign means the clubs have brought in more money than they have spent on trasfers.

The purpose of the table below is to compare the net inflow and outflow of funds; in what follows the money received is taken away from the money brought in from sales. Last time we looked Chelsea had done nothing at all – now they have acted in terms of getting rid of players but like Tottenham and Manchester City have not bought in anyone new.

In this second chart I have taken two dozen clubs across Europe who at the start of the summer I thought might be involved in some big deals. Since I last published these figures the big movers have been Juventus whose purchasing includes:

Douglas Costa from Bayern Munich for £35.2m

Mattia Perin from Genoa for £13m

Andrea Favilli from Ascoli for £6.8m

Emre Can from Liverpool on a free

João Cancelo from Valencia £35.5m

I think they feel that winning the league by just four points was wholly unacceptable although they were 18 points above the club in third place. Napoli who came second last season have just bought in one player Simon Green (or Simone Verdi as he is known locally) for £22m.

I don’t think you can get very good odds on another Juventus win. next season. After seven years on the trot another win this year seems utterly obvious. Hardly worth playing the league when the results are already known.
