Following the publication of the Pl Squads I thought you might be interested in a quick Summary.
The smallest squads
Wolves have the smallest senior squad with just 19 players (7 homegrown, 12 not). Bournemouth (16 homegrown and 5 not) and Manchester City (4 homegrown and 17 not) have 21 senior players.
Homegrown vs Foreign
There are a total of 474 players registered across the 20 clubs of whom 203 are homegrown and 271 aren’t. Thus the homegrown contingent represent 42.8% of the total (probably higher than many of us would suspect).
This overall percentage hides some big anomalies:-
- Burnley have the highest number of homegrown players 19 out of 25 or 72%
- Bournemouth with 16 out of 21 have an even higher percentage of 76%
At the other end of the scale are
- Man City with 4 out of 21 or 19%
- Huddersfield with 6 out of 23 or 26%
- Liverpool and West Ham with 7 out of 23 or 30%
- Tottenham with 7 out of 24 or 29%
- Wolverhampton with 7 out of 19 or 37%
However whilst the number of homegrown players at Wolverhampton is low, given their small squad size it actually represents a decent percentage which is close to the League average.
Total number of affiliated players
There are close to 1000 players affiliated with the PL Clubs who are between the ages of 16 and under 21 years old, the vast majority of these will count as home grown. They will form their Clubs U18, U21 and U23 squads.
Past experience indicates that fewer than 5% (say 50 players) will ultimately end up as regular starters for PL Clubs such is the attrition rate.
Manchester City with 64, Everton and Liverpool with 57 and Chelsea with 56 have the highest numbers, Cardiff (34), Newcastle (39) and Watford (23) the fewest.

As ever Chelsea remain the undisputed Leaders of the Loan market with no fewer than 28 players loaned out to clubs all over this Country and Europe. Here is the full list, it remains a mystery to us at Untold why this is an integral part of their business model. Most will never play for Chelsea so why youngsters continue to be attracted to the club from overseas is difficult to understand:-

As we know, Tottenham brought in no new players, while at the other end of the spectrum Wolves, despite having the smallest over 21 squad had by far the biggest turnover of players – 16 incoming and 17 leaving permanently with a further 13 out on Loan. Brighton also brought in 16 new players.
Time will tell if these strategies were a bold or foolhardy move.
