Arsenal v Bournemouth: the home and away form, and the injuries

by Bulldog Drummond

The good news is that this is a home game – not just so that we can go and see it, but also because we can go into the game with a really good track record at home…

2 Liverpool 13 11 2 0 35 7 28 35

6 Manchester United 13 7 5 1 25 16 9 26
7 AFC Bournemouth 14 7 4 3 26 18 8 25

Won 11, drawn 2, lost one, with 30 goals scored and just 11 against us.  Not as good as Manchester City and Liverpool obviously, but up there with them in terms of number of points.

Bournemouth of course will be looking at this home record and at their own away record…

Away games only

Here we see Bournemouth lurking near the bottom.

14 Newcastle United 13 2 6 5 10 16 -6 12
15 Southampton 14 3 3 8 13 25 -12 12
16 AFC Bournemouth 13 3 0 10 12 30 -18 9
17 Brighton and Hove Albion 13 2 2 9 12 24 -12 8
18 Cardiff City 13 2 2 9 9 24 -15 8
19 Huddersfield Town 13 1 3 9 8 28 -20 6
20 Fulham 14 0 2 12 9 35 -26 2

Three wins, ten defeats, scoring just under one goal and game and conceding over two goals a game.

So on these simple statistics, we ought to sail through, but of course we need to look a little further into what is going on…

Arsenal have only lost one home game this year, scoring 14 in six games, and conceding five.  And three of those were in the cup match against Manchester United.

Date Game Res Score
01 Jan 2019 Arsenal v Fulham W 4-1
19 Jan 2019 Arsenal v Chelsea W 2-0
25 Jan 2019 Arsenal v Manchester United FAC L 1-3
29 Jan 2019 Arsenal v Cardiff City W 2-1
21 Feb 2019 Arsenal v FC BATE Borisov Europa W 3-0
24 Feb 2019 Arsenal v Southampton W 2-0

Bournemouth this year have had a less than perfect time – even though they have only played three games – all in the Premier League…

13 Jan 2019 Everton v AFC Bournemouth L 2-0
02 Feb 2019 Cardiff City v AFC Bournemouth L 2-0
09 Feb 2019 Liverpool v AFC Bournemouth L 3-0

Seven goals conceded and none scored.

In fact you have to go right back to 27 October to find them winning a league match away.  After that they lost to Newcastle, Manchester City, Wolverhampton, Chelsea, Tottenham and Manchester United without winning a single game, or even getting a draw.  During this run Tottenham managed to knock five past them while Liverpool got four.

Because of their long term residency in the Third Division (South) we have rarely played Bournemouth, and so we can readily publish all the results of League and Cup games since the start of time.

Date Match Result Score
27 Oct 1987 Arsenal v AFC Bournemouth Lge Cup W 3-0
28 Dec 2015 Arsenal v AFC Bournemouth W 2-0
07 Feb 2016 AFC Bournemouth v Arsenal W 0-2
27 Nov 2016 Arsenal v AFC Bournemouth W 3-1
03 Jan 2017 AFC Bournemouth v Arsenal D 3-3
09 Sep 2017 Arsenal v AFC Bournemouth W 3-0
14 Jan 2018 AFC Bournemouth v Arsenal L 2-1
25 Nov 2018 AFC Bournemouth v Arsenal W 1-2

They have beaten us once in this run – 14 January 2018 when we lost 2-1.  We reversed that this season with a 2-1 win in November.  What we can see is that neither side has ever scored more than three against the other.

As a result of their home form Bournemouth now sit in the top 10.  We are fourth, but could be overtaken by Chelsea winning their game in hand by three goals.  Tottenham have now lost more games than any other top six team.

10 AFC Bournemouth 27 10 4 13 38 48 -10 34

A remarkable achievement for a club with such a small ground – a ground which has had five names: Dean Court, the Fitness First Stadium, the Seward Stadium, Goldsands Stadium and the Vitality Stadium.

As for the teams Alex Iwobi and Stephan Lichtsteiner both got knocks in the weekend game and so could miss out.  But Ainsley Maitland-Niles is available again having overcome an illness, so it might be that Lichsteiner is not needed anyway.   Laurent Koscielny’s injury did not look too bad in the last game as he readily walked off the pitch when substituted in the game on Sunday.

Otherwise there are no new injury concerns.

For Bournemouth Jefferson Lerma is suspended while Steve Cook, Callum Wilson, David Brooks, Junior Stanislas, Lewis Cook and Simon Francis all remain injured.

More tomorrow.

  1. My believe is our own dear Arsenal FC will tonight at the Ems beat AFC Bournemouth in the PL match encounter between the duo club sides by 3 goals to nil at fulltime of the match. To be in the right frame of their minds and also be on top of their game beaming with strong confidence ahead of their NLD match away to Tottenham Hotspur at Wembley in the PL next weekend, the Gunners must then beat the Cherries to use their beating them to clear the road to have a smoth passage riding into their match against Spurs to beat them.

    Therefore, under no any circumstances should Arsenal toy with their beating Bournemouth tonight but affirm the beating of them and confirm it by putting the Cherries to the gun absolutely in the match to be in the ascendancy going into the Spurs game. As a precaution, Arsenal should eschew being lackadaisical in their defending in the game but be defensively strong and be impregnable for the entire course of the 90 minutes plus the added time in the game defending stubbornly to not concede any goal to the Cherries in the match.

    Bournemouth will attack in the game using quick counterattack strategy with long range accuracy passing to try to breach the Arsenal defense-line to score. But notwithstanding this, the Gunners should watch it in game concentration fully to not indulge in any momentary loss of concentration in the game. Which if the Gunners allowed it to happene to them in the game could be punished by Cherries stealing a goal in the match.

    My Arsenal 3-4-2-1 formation starting XI and the 7 Gunners I have on the bench for the match are stated bellow but subject to Emery accepting them.

    Starts:
    …………………….Leno………………………;
    Mustafi……Sokratis…….,Monreal;
    …………..Torreira…….Xhaka…………;
    AMN…………………………….Kolasinac;
    …………Ozil………….Suarez…………….;
    ………………..Lacazette………………… .

    Bench:
    Cech Jenkinson Mavropanous Elneny Guendouzi Ramsey Aubameyang.
