Even in the days when Arsenal were Woolwich Arsenal, playing in Plumstead there was a strong rivalry between ourselves and Tottenham – although probably the biggest rivalry for Woolwich Arsenal was that with Chelsea. Arsenal and Chelsea were the two clubs who had ignored the Southern League and instead applied successfully for permission to join the Football League – Arsenal joining in 1893 and Chelsea in 1905. Tottenham had left the Southern League in 1908, and aided by Arsenal (after Tottenham found themselves without a league to play in) eventually managed to get elected that year.
Tottenham however were never that keen on other London clubs coming in on “their” patch, as when they vigorously opposed Chelsea’s application in 1905, and Arsenal’s move to Highbury in 1913 (even though this actually helped enhance Tottenham’s crowd figures.) Tottenham also fought Arsenal for election to the expanded 1st division in 1919, but fared quite poorly in the election. Details of that are in our series 100 years in the first division.
And although Tottenham have had their moments (beating us 64 times in League and Cup) most of the time we’ve seen them off, winning 82 games.
Across the last 10 seasons we have played them 25 times in the League, League Cup and FA Cup

We have won 10, lost eight and drawn seven.
In terms of knocking in the goals, when there are big scores to be had it has been Arsenal that have had them, scoring four twice and five twice, and never conceding more than three. Indeed we only conceded three twice, and one of those games was a 3-3 draw.
The last time we lost in the League at Arsenal Stadium, was 20 November 2010.
So far this season they have had a modest opening campaign…

So far in Premier League 2 they have also been middling, beating Manchester City and Liverpool while losing to Derby.
Here’s Football.London’s team for the game
Leno;
Maitland-Niles, Sokratis, Luiz, Kolasinac;
Xhaka, Guendouzi, Torreira;
Pepe, Lacazette, Aubameyang
Their commentary is of course full of “no excuses” and the like, setting Arsenal up for a fall.
Just Arsenal News go for
Leno
Maitland-Niles Luiz Sokratis Kolasinac
Willock Torreira Ceballos
Pepe Lacazette Aubameyang
Just looking at the predictions there is one other article headline that made me laugh. “9 Tottenham players feature in official Sky Sports combined XI for Arsenal game” That was from
Back in the late 90’s and early noughties, I was on my first job managing a fairly large restaurant. We’d Host events on weekends & serve lots of snacks so I’d come “home” (home was my room at my parent’s house where I’d installed my very own cable TV) with my bag of snacks just before kick off on Saturday/Sunday at highbury or which ever grounds Arsenal visited.
For Majority of those games I had no anxieties…. In a typical game the first goal would come around the 15-20 min. region, then there might be some fight back maybe a surprise leveller which would be quickly/angrily followed by a routine restoration of the lead … then half time (down goes some more of those party snacks) Second half …. now the fun begins… more goals, maybe even a penalty. then we toy with them for the final few minutes (More of those tasty snacks down the hatch….haven’t lost the weight since)
…..What was the point of all this? Ah yes Tottenham!
Even as we would go on to lose our mojo in the summer of 2005, the NLD was always there to produce sparks and it has rarely disappointed since. Spurs 4 Arsenal 5 in Nov 2004, the two 5-2 victories of 2012. The 4-4 of October 2008. The 3-0 of November 2009 with that Fabregas solo goal.
However apart from the our 4-2 victory at Emirates last season the NLD have been more cagey since Poch took over at Spurs neither team scoring more than 2 goals per game.
We want to win of course but we also want an exciting game in the best tradition of the NLD
alex’s fist PL goal for everton
had been very sloppy so far, but that was a very good header, from a remarkable cross by sigurdssson
happy for him, a nicer lad’s sure hard to find
If sokratis or Luiz are anywhere Kane he’ll go-a-flopping. Let’s see how its dealt with. Based on the first 3 matches I think Spurs can be opened up and I hope Emery goes for an attacking side. Come out on the front foot, score in the first half, see it out. COYG!
OT: TalkShite headlines
A Derby is Born – What if Arsenal had not _CONSPIRED_ to ensure Tottenham were relegated.
(Above slightly edited by me.) Apparently this same (or very similar) article had the title (also at TalkShite):
A derby is born What if Arsenal owner Henry Norris had not worked so hard to ensure north London rivals Tottenham were relegated in 1919?
Didn’t Tony show there was no conspiracy?

Our U18 lost to Soton 0-1. Bummer. They scored in the 90th minute.

Well, it is about 35 minutes to kickoff, and so far Atkinson hasn’t handed out any fouls or cards to us.
COYG!
Blistering start by the Gunners
Come on you GUNNERS
Oops….
Come on ARSENAL…
One set of commentary on the game notes that the game is being played with high intensity. But has almost nothing else to add. They can’t find any comments to make on a high intensity game?
Oops, the bad team scored. Come on Gunners, we need at least 2 goals now!
How did we give up a penalty?
Now we need at least 3 goals!
COYG!

Come on ARSENAL
I gather Xhaka fouled Son for the penalty.
COYG!
no one can complain about the effort being put in right now!!
If Arsenal will be clinical in front of Tottenham goal and defend stoutly to not concede anymore goals to Tottenham in the 2nd half of the match, the Gunners should be able to cancel out the remaining 1 goal lead of Tottenham in the match with which they lead Arsenal at half-time. And go ahead courageously to score the winning goal in the match to collect all points.
a track meet right now
Aubaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaa
Come ooonnnnnnnnnn ARSENAL
Yes Auba
How to go Auba! Nice work Guendouzi!
COYG!

What was VAR doing?
COYG!
MIKE DEAN IS A CHEAT – only Sokratis gets a yellow
Checking for offside leading to ARSENALs 3rd goal….and it was right decision to rule out the goal.
Atkinson?
COYG!
Effing rain… Can’t wait for 5 mins…
Kane dives in the box…tries to draw contact by stopping
We were clearly the better side. Spurs were playing for a draw and hoping for a lucky break.
Guendouzi is my man of the match…great work! Helped keep Spurs penned with timely interventions especially on the long balls.
Our passing is good but our players are still learning to read each other. The problem is not the receiver of the first pass but rather the movement of the third player to get the second pass…it will come.
We should have won this. A little more composure should have got all three points.
Not too disapointed , but …
Up the Gunners !
Arsenal put in the shift for this thriller, but it wasn’t to be the result we expected. A draw to the playing teams favour’s the other teams around them on the table. Someone here noted a trend from last season that seems to be playing out once again! We never get round to taking advantage of the results from other matches that could help our advancement.
Well done lads – at least we didn’t lose it, that would have been most painful.
Except for a few missed chances in the first half, could have been a win. I thought AFC owned the second half. Good performance especially being down 0-2. Plenty of fight and grit in this group. This should be a very entertaining season regardless of where they finish.
That match is why we love EPL football. COYG!
2-2 fair result.
We recovered from 0-2 to draw against Spurs. We are five points off Liverpool. I believe if we continue to improve we could find ourselves closer to them that we previously thought possible. We can secure a top 4 finish IF we stretch our objective to be as close to Liverpool and City and much as humanly possible or even beyond that.
How:
WIN all the games that are winnable on paper
Be wary of the THREE OR FOUR teams that look like they want to penetrate top 6 this season (I’ll not name them)
And Get rid of the PTSD when facing Man City and Liverpool. GROW A PAIR and give as good as you get.
How disappointing, gifting them both goals…
In an earlier game Auba got booked for being 7yards from the free kick. Here a spud can stand less than 2 yards from a free kick and not get booked. Kane can push, pull and make love (grope) to our defence but Atkinson does nothing. Kane dives and does not get booked. There were red card fouls by the spuds & VAR was in the PGMOL’s pocket. WTF is this game coming to?
Arsenal players were barged in the spud penalty box and nothing was seen. The selective vision goes on. It is truly pathetic this so called professional sport of football & the English FA are the corrupt parents of it.
I was at the game and the TV will not show the truth because it is part of the corrupt setup.
sorry for not being able to write a match report as I wasn’t at home once again to see the match.
Good fight back after a disastrous two stupid errors from our part gifting them two goals advantage.
Impressed with the way our players responded. I wonder if Laca had stayed fit we would have won the game.
A reaspnable result given our errors but it was clear that we were the better team. I think when our new players are properly bedded in and our wounded come back we will be scaring teams. Perhaps Man City and Liverpool will believe they can play their game and beat us but everyone else has been put on notice by the chances we created against a fair Tottenham side.
Contact in the box is not a foul but a dive is. Why was Kane not booked? He also fouled Luiz several times and Atkinson chose selective vision. The PGMOL are a group of select cheating blind corrupt officials.
When Rose handled the ball in the box (few minutes before we scored) everyone at the game saw it bar the PGMOL officials including the dopes on VAR. How can VAR be fair when it is run by the same group of Limited intelligence PGMOL?
In the post game interviews, Emery agreed that Lacazette has a hamstring injury. He thinks it is a minor injury.
@ Menace – 01/09/2019 at 8:29 pm – When I saw this cheating by them in not being 10 yards from the wall , I remarked to my son that if that had been Denis Bergkamp , he would have just kicked/flicked the ball onto the opposing player and would have got him booked .
I remember Denis doing this on a few occasions before. I wish our players develop this mentality too. It will not be construed as cheating if the opposition is trying to get an unfair advantage. With the tacit compliance of the PIGMOB.
As I stated above , while I’m not too disappointed , we could have won this tie with a bit more of ‘professional mentality ‘ .
Up the Gunners !
Menace, its so irritating how the VAR Can miss tnree fouls in a penality box.Well as i told you earier on VAR is not for Arsenal but against it.
@Brickfields – if an Arsenal player flicks the ball at an opponent that has not retreated 10 yards, the Arsenal player will get booked for not playing to the whistle!! You might have noticed that an Arsenal corner is rarely indicated as it is almost disdain from the official to give it. However, it is very quickly indicated if it is against Arsenal.
These little nuances go unnoticed and uncommented.
