Last summer, according to Transfermarkt Arsenal had a net spend of £280m the third highest in the league.    Arsenal were the third highest spenders that summer but only three of the top six spenders really got much out of the money they spent as this table shows…

What this suggests is that there is no immediate or absolute link between the net spend of clubs on new players and the league position of the club.  Transfers in can of course help – but they are not a guarantee of success.  

But still the media can think of nothing else, so here to keep track on their fantasies is the latest update on transfer rumours for players coming to and leaving Arsenal.  52 players have been tipped, and in the last decade the percentage of rumours turning out to be true ranges between 2% and 3%. 

With three out of 52 we are currently running close to 6% accuracy, an all time record, which either means the journalists are asleep at the pub, or else Arsenal are going to exceed all previous levels of transferring.  I suspect it is the former: Arsenal clearly need more rumours.
