Arsenal v Manchester City: how the two clubs have been doing of late

By Tony Attwood

Before each match, we tend to publish a league table showing the position of one team in terms of home games and the other in terms of away games.   But of course both teams are away for the final, and so now we can compare them in this regard – and here we see Arsenal very much come out on top in terms of wins, goals scored, and goals conceded away from home.

3 Manchester City away 15 7 4 4 24 17 7 25

In terms of recent away games, Arsenal have won four and drawn three of the last seven – a series of results which takes us back to 31 January.  Arsenal have scored 15 and conceded six, giving them a goal difference across these games of +9.

Manchester City in their last six away from home, have won three, drawn two and lost one – so a very similar run of results.   But in terms of goals, the Mancs have only scored nine and conceded eight.

However, when it comes to the head-to-head Arsenal are way ahead across the centuries, having won 101 drawn 48 and lost 65.   But of course, the ManC results only picked up of late, after the money came pouring in without limit.

Yet even despite all the money rolling in, the last six games between the two clubs have ended up with three Arsenal wins and three draws, and because I know the national media is rather reluctant to publish such results, I set them out below.  It is ten goals to Arsenal and five to ManC.

*Arsenal won 4-1 on penalties.

So we can see that most of the time the clubs are quite well balanced, although of course we particularly remember the 5-1 last year in which Lewis-Skelly was the man of the match.  Although that result still left Arsenal six points behind the league leaders of the day, Liverpool.

That game against the Mancs is remembered by many as the time Arsenal were granted a goal after a couple of minutes by a Manc cock up from which they never recovered.  ManC equalised just before the hour, but then Partey scored a couple of minutes later.  After that, Myles Lewis-Skelly scored his first goal for Arsenal – it was that kind of day.

We might also remember how Erling Haaland managed to get Lewis-Skelly booked while he was warming up: it can be that sort of tension.

Indeed, of late, instead of the endless pages of praise about Manc that the media has been more inclined to mention Arsenal a few times, and we have seen headlines such as “Fading Man City collapse again” something they practised again when they let in four second-half goals in a match against PSG.

And indeed after one game against Arsenal, the BBC reporter was driven to write, “City were shambolic in the closing half-hour, Arsenal threatening to score every time they went forward, the final whistle a merciful release from the beating being inflicted on them.”

But as we have noted before, and to be as balanced and fair as we always are (!) on this site, here is the table of the last six games for the two clubs – they are as we have reported before, first and second in the last six games league table.
