By and large, I leave commentary on World Cup affairs to others, just slipping in my odd thought on the fact that I don’t find it exciting enough to be worthy of article after article. But one thing is clear – the feeling seems to go both ways as football power people (from those who organised competitions to those who put them on TV) really don’t like the freedom of speech that football supporters have always asserted as their right.
So the arrival of political chants at football matches involving England, particularly those involving the United Kingdom’s current Prime Minister, is really frowned upon by the media.
Which is a bit of a shame because football supporters have a very long tradition of being negative about anyone and everyone in a position of power – unless it is power associated with their own team, and their own team is doing well. In which case everything is fine.
But it appears that the American organisers and facilitators of the World Cup really don’t like English politics – or I suspect any politics – creeping into the football. So we have had the Daily Mail (a right-wing English newspaper) telling us of late that a number of supporters whose St George’s crosses feature images of British servicemen have been denied permission to display them at venues.
Of course, the authorities have to find a reason beyond the notion that “we don’t like it”, and on this occasion, it seems to be that the pictures include the presence of a soldier’s silhouette holding a rifle. And it seems that no weapons can be displayed in any illustrations, according to Fifa regulations.
Now I must admit I had no idea there were such things as Fifa regulations for what you can have on a banner, but it seems so – and it makes me wonder what else is to be regulated. I guess the ultimate is anything said within five miles of a football ground. will soon be under Fifarian control too.
I find that disturbing, not just because I support freedom of thought and freedom of speech, but also because I find some chants, although containing language that I would not normally use myself, to be very amusing. I particularly recall the chants that came after Arsenal had two points deducted, but then still went on to win the league. The chant “you can stick your ****ing two points up your ****” is still in my head all these years later. And yes I do use **** here even though it doesn’t stop you knowing what the stars stand for, because with the censors about, who knows what we can and can’t say.
Mind you, we are also being told that a World Cup broadcasting company has now suspended a commentator because he got Iran and New Zealand confused during a match. I know he shouldn’t have done that, but there are over 200 countries in the world, and many of them look alike. (Although it does make me wonder how he got a job in the first place).
We have also had the news about protests against Hyundai, who are sponsors of the World Cup, because of dealing with a mining company and the issue of Mexico’s ‘disappeared’ population. I am not at all familiar with the politics of that part of the world, so I can’t comment, except to say that I really am not at all happy at this level of the reduction of free speech within football grounds.
Elsewhere, we have the news that Thomas Partey has had a visa appeal rejected by a Canadian judge, and on that point, as I think I have mentioned before, I am concerned about the removal of seemingly most notions of “innocent until proven guilty” – but I would add that I have not been following the case in any detail. It is just that if I got accused of something, I’d like the “innocent until proven guilty” rule to apply.
So what else has happened? Commentators in England generally don’t like the notion of four quarters in a game, and there are reports that England fans were thrown out of a pub by Dallas police after £30,000 drinking session. Oh yes and “England fans face World Cup flag ban” because St George flats were found to be covering an advert, and that is very much not allowed. Adverts first, supporters second, that’s the rule.
Overall, I think it is easier to stay at home and read a book. But then that’s just me.
Tony, I get your frustration and you have reported some true facts that England is not FIFA’s favourite subject, and like you I am a true patriot and these rulings is expected from our bias European representatives. No surprises their.
Not much in the so called media today, no one actually buying players, just speculations about overpriced players, which is an unusual slow start, maybe due to the internationals and non disclosed closed door deals happening.
No news on ManC115, yet they are confident enough to be enquiring about new super star players to join them. But why would they be enquiring about new players and more so why would any new player be interested in ManC115 if they truly have the prospect of being relegated. Maybe ManC115 know something we don’t, and that they are confident that their will be no relegation this year!
Also I am waiting to hear if their have been any new FIFA or premier league rules introduced this year, not just financial rules but any new game, VAR of refereeing rules introduced or changed? Nothing has been said yet.
So nothing left to talk about at present, so like most gooner fans, just waiting on the next England international game or any international team with Arsenal players (even Arsenal Linked players to keep it interesting), and hopefully praying that they both play well but more importantly remain injury free and fit for the new season.
The next Arsenal Player involvement is Sweden tonight then after that game it will be Germany, with both Gyokeres and Havertz hopefully scoring a hatrick each tonight!
Oops, Sorry My mistake with the last paragraph in my above write. Unfortunately my TV mag never mentioned that the German game tonght is the Women’s international football, (no Arsenal players,which is ok for some), so obviously, sadly no Havertz, but the Swedish game at 6pm is the men’s and will star an Arsenal player in Gyokeres!
FIFA are a hypocritical joke. The stadia can’t show he Sponsor’s name and the media are banned from mentioning it. Taking a swipe at crass commercialism? Then you see the pitch and the hoardings are covered in advertising just as they are in the League matches. My guess, without any facts at all, is that FIFA can’t get the stadia to pay them to show the name. Disgraceful. I’d guess if Gillette wanted to advertise razor blades on the hoardings it would be acceptable. Or Lincoln Financial it’s services or MetLife Stadium its insurance plans it would be acceptable to FIFA. hypocritical joke. I’ve watched a few minutes of their matches to see if Arsenal players were still upright. My only interest is seeing if our lads come out of this unscathed. If a player is injured in one of these FIFA tournaments or friendlies their Club should be compensated relative to their salary for time missed. Some players, notably Declan Rice, are absolutely gassed but are still shoved out there by their managers. At the end of the Tournament just give me the injury report on our players. That’s my only interest. Up the Gunners!
So in a country (USA) where carrying firearms is legal fifa have leapt in to ban some flags because there’s an outline of a Shock!Horror! rifle.

Be glad Fifa haven’t infected club football just yet because those cannons are going to have to go.

All three should be at Arsenal receiving treatment toi ensure they are 100% fit for the start of the season, AND well rested.
The fact Arsenal have allowed Saliba and Saka to travel with injuries is beyond me.
And I realize other clubs may have similar situations, but that’s their problem. Their fans should be as outraged as I am.
And lest we forget in Season 2022/3 Gabriel Jesus sustained his first major ligament injury—a sprained MCL (medial collateral ligament) in his right knee—on December 2, 2022, while playing for Brazil at the World Cup in Qatar. This required surgery and kept him out of action for about three months.
Prior to that we played 14, Won 12 Lost and 1 Drew 1
After losing Jesus we Played 24 Won 14 Lost 5 and Drew 5
We finished 5 points behind Manc
Who knows whether Jesus’s goals would’ve of turned the 3 home draws into victories, after all just one goal in each would of done it?
As everyone keeps telling us, it’s all very fine margins, and potentially losing 3 of your best players is more than a fine margin.

Well said Gooner 72 & Nitram, the Arsenal Doctor seems to have no say as they are assessed again by the international doctor and international manager, who should be sending them home for recovery. There needs to be a ruling from higher officials, but unfortunately that is FIFA, and they are a clown outfit.
Some players are injury free and need some game time like Havertz and Merino, but the ones you mentioned, I agree should be rested and brought home for recovery and it should be a general ruling as the players find it hard to say no.
Hope Havertz ,who I have now been told is playing tonight (stupid TV magazine!) dispute reading otherwise, is injury free and has a good game, and all the Arsenal international players come back injury free as our main priority.
When next season is done and dusted , The mainstream media will go for the kill if we don’t win 2 on the trot . Then they’ll gleefully say “not a great team, the best retain it” .
Summer transfers will again be essential once its confirmed our players at the world cup are injured and out for months.
Like most Gunners supporters I’m very concerned .
