Comparing Arsenal, Tottenham, Newcastle, Man C, Man U, Chelsea, Everton, Liverpool: this year against last season

So how are we doing? An updated comparison against last year.

by Stuart Higgins

We’re at 9 games played now and in follow up to the earlier article I wrote comparing this year to the equivalent fixtures last season I have added a little twist.  I have added in the result for game 10 from last season so we can look at what needs to happen to be in a better position this season.  In case you missed it or for a recap, the original article can be found here:-

Quick recap, in the case of relegated / promoted teams for last season, I have used the result from the alternative fixture based on the following:-

Man City are 4 points up on this stage last season.  Man City you could say are doing remarkably well, 4 points up on their championship form of last season, definitely title contenders in my opinion.

How do things look at Manchester United?

Man United are also fairing quite well, they are 1 point up compared to last season.  I bet they wish they had that extra point last season.  The next game is against Arsenal where they totally thrashed us last season, they could go 4 points ahead with a win again, let’s hope we keep them to just the 1 point ahead.

Things are a little different at Arsenal however.  Compared to the same fixtures from last season, we are down 5 points.  A win this weekend is not enough to get us ahead or even equal which is quite a worry.  One small consolation is that we have had 6 away games out of 10 compared to 5 for the two Manchester teams however this makes no difference for the purposes of this comparison.

And now for our friendly neighbours.  In my first article, they were 1 point behind on the same fixtures the previous season but now they are level on points so an improvement for them.  The key now is to match their win against Wigan from last year or fall behind again.

Fortunes have changed for Newcastle, after falling 7 points behind they have now managed to claw this back and are 3 points away from break even.  They need to win their next game against Liverpool to maintain this.

Following on from their success of last season, Chelsea have got off to a cracking start and are looking un-catchable.  At present they have doubled their points total compared to the same fixtures last year.  Their next game against Swansea (away) was a draw last year but without disrespecting Swansea, I can’t see them coming home with less than 3 points although as they say, it’s a funny old game.  Hats off to Chelsea, they are doing fantastically.

Everton are up next and they too are seeing a good increase in points.  Three points up on last season, they won the next fixture last year so the worst that could happen for Everton after this weekend is they break even.

Now for Liverpool whom in the last article we discovered they had declined by 3 points after 7 games.  Unfortunately for the Reds their fortunes do not get any better as they now lay a total of 5 points behind.  To ensure they don’t slip any further behind a win to match lasts year win against Newcastle is required or they could drop back as far as 8 points behind last season.

Chelsea again are the dominators of the pack and the league having improved their points tally further.  United and Tottenham are also both out of the red but most worryingly sees Arsenal being leap frogged by Newcastle whilst we drop down and join Liverpool.  I think the season is truly for Chelsea to lose whilst on this form, Arsenal will not be making top 4 I’m afraid.  Come on boys, the true comeback kings!

3 Replies to “Comparing Arsenal, Tottenham, Newcastle, Man C, Man U, Chelsea, Everton, Liverpool: this year against last season”

  1. The above for Newcastle is incorrect we did not play Chelsea away last season until end of season!

  2. Geordie, it’s comparing this seasons fixtures to the same ones last season. Just noticed the Chelsea score against Newcastle is incorrect, points are correct tho. Nearly went insane checking the data was correct, knew there would have to be one I missed.

  3. last year we scored 20 goals however this year we have managed only 15 in the same corresponding fixtures. I think that explains why we managed less points this season.
