This year / last year – a comparison so far

This year last year

by Stuart Higgins

This year last year

We are now 14 games into the season and I thought it was about time for a follow up on the series of articles started earlier this season comparing the results from this season with those of the same fixture last season.  I have switched to a new format which allows us to look at not only scores and points totals but also goals for and against.

The previous article can be found here :http://blog.emiratesstadium.info/archives/25776
Bearing in mind there are three teams in the Premier League this season who were not in it last year, I have used the following comparison based on finishing position last season:-

Finishing Positions 11/12 Season

Championship

Premiership

Reading

1st

18th

Bolton

Southampton

2nd

19th

Blackburn

West Ham

3rd

20th

Wolves

Starting with Newcastle, I’d say they are a club in crisis if ever I saw one and if I were a betting man, I’d be putting my money on the next change of manager happening here.  4 defeats on the trot is a big blow considering they picked up points at each of them last season, will they stand for 5?  Well considering they are down 10 goals scored whilst conceding an extra 6 coupled with a staggering drop of 13 points, I wouldn’t be surprised if Pardew was shown the door soon.  Next up they have West Brom whom they beat last year so no pressure.  Maybe they could entice Pep out of retirement and get him warmed up for the Man Utd hot seat.

Chelsea have vastly improved on last season although finishing 6th could be said as strange for the Chelsea of recent years.  So they have this season an improvement of 7 more goals scored, 2 less conceded and 8 more points.   Strange that a change of manager was needed but here’s to Rafa to deliver the old Chelsea back to the fans.

Everton started off the season much stronger than last year but seem to have faded away slightly over recent weeks.  They have improved by 4 on goals scored but have conceded 7 more goals and dropped a point.

Liverpool, after going 3 points down to last year in an earlier article are now looking like they’ve seen much better decades after scoring 1 less goal, conceding 3 more and dropping 5 points in the process.  Further proof they are a club in decline living on past glories.
