2022/23 PL Season – Matchweek 4 & 5 – Refereeing matters

by Andrew Crawshaw

Arsenal developing

What did we learn from the referees in Matchweek 3?

Bournemouth v Arsenal  – I thought Referee Craig Pawson had a good game, he was reasonably even-handed and missed nothing I thought was serious.

  • Min 11 VAR check for Ben White showed he had timed his run to perfection
  • Min 18+ Referee allowing a few tackles to go
  • Min 27 Zemura with one too many challenges gets yellow card
  • Min 43 Offside given against Saka but Martinelli took the ball
  • Min 52 Jesus boobed for being a little too determined (was a foul)
  • Min 60 Martinelli taken out correct yellow card for Smith
  • Min 72 Jesus goal ruled out by VAR for the tightest of offsides, they needed a magnifying glass for that one.

Tottenham v Wolverhampton W – Referee Simon Hooper

Harry Kane continues to lead a charmed life in avoiding cards  Elbows a Wolves player to the ground from behind when running past him.  (Thanks to Chris for his post).

Newcastle v Manchester City – Referee Jarred Gillett

Min 73 Trippier initially given a straight red card for a foul on De Bruyne, this was overturned following a VAR review and a yellow card awarded instead.

IIWGX moments of the week (If it were Granit Xhaka)

  1. Karry Kane escaping with no card – again
  2. Kieran Trippier having his straight red card reduced to a yellow following a VAR intervention

Who is on duty this coming weekend and also for the midweek games?
