The number of players Arsenal is buying reaches 70 as Window opens. The Index vol 13

By Tony Attwood.

There is a story that says goldfish have a memory span of about 2 seconds.  It isn’t true as anyone who has studied experimental psychology will tell you – there’s a classic experiment through which one can prove that goldfish can be trained that their food always comes down the yellow tube not the blue or red tube (no matter how the tubes are lined up), thus showing they have the ability to learn – which implies a memory span long enough to remember learned facts.

But as we can see, from the way transfers are reported, football fans are treated as having less memory than goldfish by the mass media, the bloggettas and indeed the whole Commentariat.  Which reveals just how deep is the contempt with which us regular card carrying supporters are actually treated by them all.

And yes, I know the window opened yesterday and I am a day behind things, but what with Untold being closed for a few days it has taken a little while to catch up.  But here we on 2 July with 60 days left to go and Arsenal have been “linked to” or are “set to” (or whatever phraseology you want) sign a whole 70 players.

This is running above last season’s total by this point, and is “set to” climb to well over 100 in the next 60 days, and I’m sure beat last season’s total overall.

So here is the latest list of players coming in.  And here’s a health reminder.  Some of these predictions might not happen.

  1. Giroud will not get a deal (at his age) anywhere to match the one he already has at Arsenal, he’s in most of the first team match squads, plays often enough, scores goals and his French place is assured. As another blogger noted he’s probably plan C behind Welbeck (if we sign a new striker), but he’s not getting any younger and has a good contract. Why leave?

  2. Why would Giroud leave?

Well if Lacazette signs (which seems close to a done deal), Giroud would find himself in a situation where he is the starting striker for France, and (at best) a plan B striker behind Lacazette with Arsenal. One year away from a World Cup, that is a very dangerous spot to be in…

I would love to see Giroud stay at Arsenal, I would love to see Giroud and Lacazette play together, I am convinced they could be complementary, but I really doubt Wenger will do it as it would mean a new system and sacrificing Ozil who would have to play on a wing.

So a departure would make perfect sense for Giroud

    So

  3. Only 10 more days for the first football of the new season – Thu Jul 13 v SydneyFC. Whohaaa! 🙂
