This article is part of a series stretching over several seasons in which a team of referees analyse the work of refs in Premier League matches.
Our figures show that when we analyse the errors made by refs there are consistent trends which do not “even out” through the season, as some commentators would have it. All the earlier ref reviews plus analyses of the errors made by refs, and articles relating to our campaign to have the body which organises referees activities reformed, plus an analysis of the background to this campaign, can be found on:
Although this is a site built for Arsenal supporters we welcome comments from fans of other teams, although we tend not to publish comments which are simply abusive or which are completely off topic.

What to make of this game? In the first half the ref was really doing a great job. And in fact most of the mistakes were down to the first assistant who called a foul that wasn’t a foul, stopped a Wigan attack for an offside that wasn’t, didn’t help the ref when a foul from Chelsea close to him happened. I must admit in the knowledge of the events later in the game I decided to take a closer look at the assistant and he was clearly or blinded by something or biased. As a result a lot of the points lost by the ref came as a result of this assistant his mistakes.
In the first half Wigan claimed a penalty for a handball from Cahill but the ref gave correctly a corner because the ball first hit his chest and then the arm and from a close distance. In the second half Chelsea should have got a penalty when Caldwell handled a cross with an outstretched arm. big decision going against Chelsea.
But when it comes to big decisions going against a team let us talk a bit about Wigan. What a great miss for the first goal. Ivanovic was clearly offside when the ball came in his direction. Further more Drogba seemed to touch the ball with his head and if he touched it Ivanovic would have been again offside. Like I said or he was blinded or he did it on purpose. Terrible miss and costly for the ref his final numbers.
The second Chelsea goal was also a total failure from the same assistant. When Torres managed to take his only good shot on goal Mata was past the last defender and in an offside position. When the ball rebounded from the post it came to Mata who then took advantage from his offside position. The interfering of two other Chelsea players standing in an offside position who attacked the Wigan keeper added only to the feelings of injustice. Now I know that such a thing (rebounding ball) is harder to see than the first offside goal but this is where a video replay would be helpful to make sure such mistakes do not happen.
Now Wigan is facing the consequences of those 2 mistakes and goes home empty handed. They should have had at least one point.

The bias table shows a big handicap for Wigan but I think almost the half of those decisions are down to that one assistant who was having a shockingly bad afternoon.

this match summed up well the state of English game..rotten to the core but things did even out for wigan vs us didnt they? When is that review out again walter?
Great review as usual. Does anyone else find it interesting that Wigan has had an amazing reversal of fortunes just after Martinez came out and praised EPL referees and complimented Mike Riley?
@Mahdain:
We seem to be thinking along the same lines 🙂
The game was crying out for The Ox, but Weng got his tactics hopelessly wrong again by swapping BennyHill for Eboué-With-a-Syrup, who produced nothing. With less than 20 minutes to go, The Ox came on for the hapless Djourou, and although he started to make things happen, there seemed little support from his team-mates to latch on to anything coming their way. The Odious Chavs must have lapped up tonight’s performance because, unless we raise our game significantly on Saturday, they will run straight through us.
Finally, let’s dwell on Monday night’s lack of tactics and team management. Pat Rice was content to rest on his sun-lounger all game and Weng seemed to occasionally flap his arms around like a demented penguin and then sit down again. These antics didn’t impress me, nor did they inspire his players. If Weng gave any sort of halftime team-talk, then nobody listened. And it just happened that, sitting in the opposite dugout, we saw a bright young manager, who, with very few resources at his disposal, got his tactics spot-on. If Weng is going to carry on in this vein, perhaps it’s time to seriously consider alternatives.
I agree Aras. I vote you become the Arsenal manager instead. How is that for an alternative?
Good analysis, how i wish Wenger could read this and adjust.
Off-topic.
It is amazing what sorts of articles one runs across in searching for arsenal OR gunners in the news.
In Liberia, a game between two teams (one being Young Arsenal) has resulted in 3 players being banned for assaulting (whipping) the referee during the game. The lesser incident involves a 6 month ban, the greater incident a 2 year ban.
http://www.liberianobserver.com/index.php/sports/item/1068-3-players-banned-for-%E2%80%9Cwhipping%E2%80%9D-referees
It looks like there is no shortage of problems in Liberian football from the end of that article.
