I think nobody who has been following us in the past 6-7 years or so since we have started doing our referee reviews ever will have found that we had a soft spot for Mike Dean. Au contraire. The number of articles we have written to ask the removal of Dean from every possible Arsenal related match must be in the dozens.

And yet, in our reviews we try to be as unbiased as possible.  And I think this review is a proof that we do our reviews, or try to do them, as open mindedly as possible, no matter who the ref is and what his (sometimes) terrible history was with Arsenal.

And so we can come to the conclusion that the ref’s score in the first half was 76.4%, and 71, 4% when we put weight on the decisions. The only thing missing was two yellow cards for reckless tackles. He gave the fouls but didn’t give the appropriate yellow card.  The only big mistake was in fact by the first assistant when he called Alexis back for offside when he was clearly level with the last defender.

And if we then go on to the second half we find a score of (do sit down first before continuing to read) of 94.7% and when put weight on the decisions the score is 90.4%. That can only be classified as excellent.  Top class.

And yes this is Untold Arsenal talking about Mike Dean.

In the second half Dean should have given a yellow card against Ayala when he stopped Alexis off the ball with his arm. The replays are not clear enough to see a smashing arm or just a holding arm, because in the first case it would have been a red card. But Dean gave the foul but forgot to give the card.

The bias score was still very much against Arsenal with 4 wrong decisions against Arsenal and 1 wrong decision against Middlesbrough. But all in all… nothing wrong with the major decisions Dean had to make.  But only 5 wrong decisions is not that bad (compared to some reviews in the past…)

6 Replies to “Ref Review: Arsenal – Middlesbrough; a non Deanesque score!”

  1. and as a result of this excellent performance Dean was sent to Championship, although for a somewhat high-profile Birmingham derby

  2. Despite us dropping points, despite Dean…. our Untold ref review praises Dean for his match.
I love it when they call us biased. 😉
Looking at the first reviewing of the Sunderland match that we won comfortably the ref review doesn’t look too favourable for Aktinson.

No, it is not as we regularly hear that we only complain about the ref when we drop points. As said in the article, au contraire. We complain when the ref makes a mess. Win, draw or lose.

  3. Seems to show, as we suspect, that even Dean is a capable ref who chooses at times to be terrible as long as it hurts Arsenal.

  4. I recommend having a look at Keith Hackett in today’s Daily Telegraph. He points out that Atkinson has had a lot of games and does not appear to be performing, seems over worked. Then he says Clattenburg seems to be getting under his fair share of games. He seems to be implying PGMOL bias against Clattenburg. It is interesting to see a retired ref and former member of the PGMOL saying these things.

  5. I’m not sure how you missed the first critical wrong decision that Dean made. He woke up & managed to get to the ems!!!

He was not wanted but still managed & should have got a dark Arsenal red for having made it.

    😉 😉 😉

  6. Everyone has an off day……………I mean Dean, not the ref reviewers obviously!
