It is a perfect example of how the toxic blogs and newspaper sites build up their eternal story of mangerial incompetence – bringing on Aubameyang for the last ten minutes when Martinelli had been having a corker of a game. What an idiot that manager is. Get him out now!!!
But David Seaman apparently was bamboozled – at least according to the Star and lots of other sites jumped in as well following that lead.
It is a perfect example of how the media and medietta (invented word of the day for little media drainpipes) build up stories based on their own ignorance. They don’t know why something happens and because they are the brainy people that means no one knows, and that means the manager is an idiot. Emery Out!
So here is the answer:
If you read through the Martinelli interviews from the last few years (you might need a Portuguese translation unit, but people commenting ought to be doing their homework in my view) you will find regular references to the fact that Martinelli thinks his best position is on the wing.
Mr Emery does not seem to agree, wanting to play the lad down the middle, but as the central route was being blocked for him as the match wore on, he decided to give Martinelli a little run out down the wing, just to see what happened. The question was did it bemuse the opposition defence for example? Were they unsure of where to go? Can Martinelli and Auba play in the same team with one on the wing and the other in the centre, and with them bemusing the defence by swapping positions?
Arsenal supporters of a certain age are of course used to this sort of ploy because Henry would regularly go and play left wing while actually being centre forward. As Pires said a couple of times, it could get very crowded out there on the left.
So part of a bit of an experiment. Can the team play Auba in the middle and Matrinelli on the left? Can they swap over in a game? What does it do to a tired defence when they do that?
And that’s it. No mystery. No oddity. No need to make a big fuss
All you need is a bit of background reading.

Arsenal were not chasing the game. On the contrary we were leading comfortably. So why risk the only fit senior striker in the team?
That’s the point!
What if Auba got injured in those last minutes. Which is not a far-fetched possibility.
For me, it was an unnecessary, stupid gamble.
Awwwgh!,, He could have and maybe not. Was is it worth the risk? Absolutely. With 31 PL games to go and Carabao, and FA and EL still in contention why not? Stupid? Hardly.

By that logic, we should keep him from training, as there is a risk of injury. These incessant second guessing the coach,is just tiresome.
Perhaps Emery was just giving Auba a run out. Not unheard of, keeping him sharp, etc. What any and all, media, supporters, even the opposition, should be saying about this match and, generally re AFC, is look at the numbers of young talent this organisation have! It’s really amazing. As Tony stated in a previous thread, ‘you could put together an under 25 side with this lot and compete in the EPL’. I agree. That’s the fun and interesting aspect to this season. We all want UCL football NOW but I think the team is being set up for the long term. The prospects this season and going forward are very good. I don’t understand the negativity from some supporters and contributors here. If you can’t enjoy seeing young talent blossom before our eyes you’re just blinded by negativity. I choose to see the positives and they’re many. AFC are building a squad that from front, middle to back will run the opposition off the pitch. Quite a bit of pace through the side, especially with what’s coming up. COYG!

I hartly agree with goonersince72 this team has the making of a very great team some of the play was fantastic and when you think the young guys who didn’t play or are on loan it an exciting prospect for now and the future
All looks sweet to me, just time kt, holding and belerin started in perm that’s all I ask or at least two of them.
Training and a match already virtually won, hardly worth comparing, I’m sorry.
We can all afford to argue and smile. If the unwanted had happened, I bet it would be a different tone on this site entirely.
The game was relatively clean & the officials kept it so. The inclusion of Auba was an excellent move as Martinelli needed a fresh situation to exploit. The game was not done & dusted because Emery wants constant aggressive play until the final whistle.
Martinelli was open many times during the match and was not given a long ball to run onto. He kept motioning to the midfield and center backs but they played the square ball. He is young and hungry and needs some quality balls played long to him. He can work with crosses or with balls to chase. He is one of the rare intelligent forwards that knows whe to lob and when to shoot.
