Arsenal v Bayern Munich: a battle of goalscorers

By Sir Hardly Anyone

Bayern Munich’s last ten league games have thrown up a modest set of results – at least by their standards.  5 wins, 1 draw, 4 defeats.

Breaking this down further we get at home…

  • Home wins: 3
  • Home draws: 1
  • Home defeats: 1

And away

  • Away wins: 2
  • Away Draws: 0
  • Away Defeats: 3

And the goals…

  • Home goals across the last ten games (four at home): 13
  • Away goals across the last ten games (six away): 14

So let us compare this with Arsenal – and here perhaps I may add a point that because I can’t find any site that does this sort of comparison across countries we are working it out ourselves.  And yes I know it is hardly rocket science (although by and large since rocket science involves finding a gas that expands when you set fire to it, putting it in a fireproof container and then setting fire to it, it isn’t that difficult,) we don’t normally have to do the sums, just the comparisons.

Anyway here is the comparative league table for the two clubs across the last ten games.

Team P W D L F A GD Pts
Arsenal 10 9 1 0 33 4 +29 28
Bayern 10 5 1 4 27 20 +7 16

What we might also add is that within the last ten games, there is one game that really stands out: on 9 March Bayern beat Mainz 8-1.  And in this case one has to understand the league table:

Team P W D L F A GD Pts
1 Bayer Leverkusen 28 24 4 0 69 19 50 76
2 Bayern Munich 28 19 3 6 80 36 44 60
3 VfB Stuttgart  28 19 3 6 64 34 30 60
16 Mainz 05 28 4 11 13 26 46 -20 23
17 1 FC Koln 28 4 10 14 23 49 -26 22
18 Darmstadt 98 28 2 8 18 28 71 -43 14

Now the simple fact is that across these ten games Bayern Munich have scored 27 goals, which is obviously 2.7 a game: pretty impressive.   Although we might care to note that Arsenal have scored 3.3 goals a game, which one might say (if one were prone to play with the English language) is extra-impressive.  But of course one would not be so silly.

But the key point here is that the recent 8-1 win over Mainz was not the only time the club has scored 8 this season, since they also beat Darmstadt 8-0 earlier in the campaign.   That Harry Kane putting himself about a bit, I’ll be bound!

Arsenal have not gone to such extremes although the club did knock six past Lens, while in the league matches at home you might recall the four league games between 11 February and 4 March this year in which Arlsenal scored 25 in overcoming West Ham, Burnley, Newcastle United and Sheffield United.

Bayern have twice got up to 17 goals in four matches.

So although their eight-goal romps (I think “romp” is the correct journalistic word for scoring eight, just as “rant” is the preferred journalistic term for Mikel Arteta making a point while a journalistic rage is normally called “an article”,) is a matter of record, they’ve not been doing it all the time.

Anway, we might perhaps be able to call this a bit of a topsy turvey season, and quite what we will get when it comes to the game at Arsenal stadium, one cannot be too sure.

Bayern won their Champions League group and it is always worth publishing the table just to see how Manchester United got on…

UEFA Champions League – Group A 2023/24
Team P W D L F A GD Pts
1 Bayern Munich 6 5 1 0 12 6 6 16
2 Copenhagen 6 2 2 2 8 8 0 8
3 Galatasaray 6 1 2 3 10 13 -3 5
4 Manchester United 6 1 1 4 12 15 -3 4

Arsenal likewise won their group, and despite losing one game actually ended with a goal difference of twice that of Bayern Munich, finishing 16 goals for and four against, compared to Bayerns 12 for and six against.

UEFA Champions League – Group B 2023/24
Team P W D L F A GD Pts
1 Arsenal 6 4 1 1 16 4 12 13
2 PSV Eindhoven 6 2 3 1 8 10 -2 9
3 RC Lens 6 2 2 2 6 11 -5 8
4 Sevilla 6 0 2 4 7 12 -5 2

And yet Arsenal have in this season and the season before made stunning progress.  Across the last seven seasons Arsenal have finished 5th, 6th, 5th, 8th, 8th, 5th, 2nd and ?

Bayern have concluded their last seven seasons in top position.   This season however they are 16 points behind the leaders with six games to go.   So they could win all six and get to 78 points while Bayer 04 Leverkussen could lose all six of their games and remain on 76 points.    But I think that might be unlikely.

So we might expect Bayern Munich to win some of their games but for Bayer 04 Leverkussen to pick up the one win needed somewhere along the road to give them the title.

This means, in conclusion, that while Bayern Munich won’t of course admit it, the league title has gone and all their prime efforts will go into the Champions League.   Arsenal however will be focussing primarily on the title.

That might just give Bayern the edge, but looking at the way our lads are playing, I can’t imagine Odegaard, Rice, Havertz, Saliba, Gabriel, White, Saka, and I rather suspect Martinelli, plus the rest giving anything less than 250%.
