This was a game lacking any real quality, the first half was dire, two poor teams, little passion, Anfield was so quiet. Anyone could have Reffed the first half, you, me, the ball boy. The second half was different, Newcastle came out to defend the 1-1, and they did, until the only player in the game to show any class entered the fray, Stevie Gerrard.
The Ref did influence the game, he made a good call for the Liverpool equaliser, but missed two dangerous challenges by Newcastle players, both were Red cards, one was a penalty, and he was well positioned to see both incidents. He missed them, perhaps because they happened very quickly, that being the case why were the players aware of what happened, when 3 players close to an incident all react spontaneously, you know something has gone on. Just occasionally, Probert looks confused!
I hate it when they don’t punish serious foul play. It means the players not only stay on the pitch, but are able to help their side in the next few games. It also sends a message that serious foul play is acceptable in the game, which is, of course, ridiculous.
I believe Utd would not have won the league last season if just half of their clear red card-offences were punished correctly.
A question for any of the reviewers. Not that I don’t have enough to do, but I find myself thinking about this while sleeping. Is there some site where I can get data from games of referees decisions? A while ago, Walter had an article about the timing of decisions, and ever since then I’ve had Fourier Transforms in my sleep.
Thanks.
