Untold Ref Review: Bolton Wanderers 1 – 4 Tottenham Hotspur. Dean stars as… “Dean”

This article is part of a series stretching over several seasons in which a team of referees analyse the work of refs in Premier League matches.

Our figures show that when we analyse the errors made by refs there are consistent trends which do not “even out” through the season, as some commentators would have it.    All the earlier ref reviews plus analyses of the errors made by refs, and articles relating to our campaign to have the body which organises referees activities reformed, plus an analysis of the background to this campaign, can be found on:

Although this is a site built for Arsenal supporters we welcome comments from fans of other teams, although we tend not to publish comments which are simply abusive or which are completely off topic.

Today’s referee is Mike Dean

Just when Bolton were on top Spurs managed to end the game with two quick breaks, it was incisive football of the type we have become accustomed to. Dean was his usual self, in strange positions, missing the blatant, penalising the trivial, and as usual, failing to apply the Laws of the Game in the manner that he is employed to do.

A few controversial moments, Spurs should have had a penalty in the 2nd minute as Wheater just pulled Kaboul away from the flight of the ball at a corner. Kaboul did not even appeal, perhaps being a centre half himself he just knows that is the way it is. Bolton too had a similar situation in the 58th minute when Adebayor appeared to barge Boyata from a corner, but the angle was poor and I could not be sure if it was as I suspected, so I have not marked it.

Bolton had a big Pen shout in the 41st minute, but it all resulted from a Davies foul not given by Dean, so he got away with that one. A penalty to Bolton at that stage would have been nice, me being a Gooner, but the review is free of bias so therefore,  it would have been harsh

The first two goals had moments of controversy preceding them, Modrics goal,  (great strike) was from a corner disputed by Bolton for a handball by Sandro, but the ball was knocked onto Sandros hand by Ream from about 6 inches, so whilst contact was definite, it was certainly not deliberate, and then the corner should have been defended better.

The Bolton goal was from a throw in when Bolton fans were screaming for a foul by Rose on Eagles. They were right it was a foul, but they scored from the throw. This was in another phase of play and again should have been defended better.

Finally Kevin Davies, English players don’t dive do they? Well Kevin Davies did in the 47th minute, Dean said get up, but did not caution him. At that moment Dean was selective in his application of the laws. It was irresponsible and a poor reffing. The Laws of the Game are meant to be applied, and Dean is well paid to perform that task. Every time a Ref acknowledges a dive and does not caution, they encourage the next dive, and thus, make their own job harder. PLEASE APPLY THE LAWS OF THE GAME!

The same numbers of wrong calls for both teams. If we put weight on it, the numbers become negative for Tottenham. But as Tottenham ran out as winners nobody will moan about it I guess.

  2. What happened to Dean at half time in the Arsenal v Tottenham game because ever since he seems to have been reffing games without his usual bias !
