Untold Ref Review: Sunderland 1 – 0 Liverpool

This article is part of a series stretching over several seasons in which a team of referees analyse the work of refs in Premier League matches.

Our figures show that when we analyse the errors made by refs there are consistent trends which do not “even out” through the season, as some commentators would have it.    All the earlier ref reviews plus analyses of the errors made by refs, and articles relating to our campaign to have the body which organises referees activities reformed, plus an analysis of the background to this campaign, can be found on:

Although this is a site built for Arsenal supporters we welcome comments from fans of other teams, although we tend not to publish comments which are simply abusive or which are completely off topic.

Today’s referee is Anthony Taylor –

Sometimes you get the feeling that some players can do more than others. Today this was the case with Adam. The Liverpool player should have been booked a few times in the first half but the ref just let it go.

Enrique and Kuyt also should have got a yellow but he also let them go. So one can understand the frustration of Sunderland that it was them who got the first yellow card. That was a correct one but after letting 3 cards go by it always gives a feeling of injustice.

The goal from Sunderland was okay and the yellow card for Skrtel who kicked Bendtner off the field with a wild tackle was also well dealt with by the ref.

A very poor first half by the ref but he recovered a lot in the second half and made it to a score that can be seen but is far from the required PL level we would like to see.

Most decisions going against Sunderland in this game despite them being the home team. This had a lot to do with the poor first half and the poor handling of some yellow cards by the ref.

  1. Poor Liverpool! Even when given a lot of leeway by the ref, they lack the quality to pick up any points.

Imagine if Wenger had “shown the ambition” to buy established Premier League english players, rather than lower-league finds like AOC or Jenkinson…

  2. I can’t believe that Suarez didn’t dive in the whole game. The guy could do that not bad at all 😉

  3. What a joke! Sunderland can feel hard done by, but they must remember that they’re the only team in history to be awarded a goal after the ball was deflected off another large primary-coloured ball, and go on to win the match. Every member of Sunderland FC cheered that goal and that victory. It’s all about winning, but that was disgraceful. And as for some pushes and trips, the little girls should never forget how they fucked over football. Refs are inconsistent, but this is petty. The beach ball incident is worth a read, not this, this is a standard review for the average EPL match.

  4. Skrtel’s 81st minute foul looked a red card offence to me. He tackled high up Bentdner’s leg, from behind, with no chance of getting the ball. It was easily equal to the one Barton got sent off for playing for Newcastle against Liverpool.

  5. WMC,
I agree about the beach ball incident. I really could not and still cannot believe that the goal was given.
I think I wrote an article about it in those days that appeared on Untold to explain the rules about dead objects on the field and how wrong the decision was.

But as we only started reviewing games from other teams from this season on we don’t have a review of that game.

And yes you are right about this being a standard review for the average EPL match. That is just the whole point of our ref reviews: to get as many games as possible.

So far our team has reviewed 138 games this season. Still a few to come before we can draw some conclusions about the standard of refereeing in the EPL

  6. Still twisting on about the beach ball,……the beach ball that one of your own fans thought it was funny to throw on the pitch. Look at your own (especially home) performances against some of the so-called “little teams”. You’re in the shadow of at least half a dozen teams, including Everton, & apart for the odd league cup, there’ll not be any other trophies at Anfield for a long time yet. Never mind though, you can hold a candle-lit vigil, & wallow in self pity for a while,…..you’re pretty good at that.

  7. If you watch the beach ball game we dominated and were unlucky not to win by a bigger margin the chances we had. The Liverpool fans hoyed the beach ball on anyhow, so really Sunderland are blameless, and its your own fault. We can celebrate the victory or Liverpool’s stupidity. I’m game for either.
