  1. Dowd at his (biased) worst it seemed…

I really cannot understand Vaz Te didn’t get a red card for planting his foot against the head of Mannone. Do we really want another Cech? Vaz Te saw Mannone coming and could have easily avoided impact. As a result Vaz Te hurt himself and maybe justice was done but the fact that Dowd didn’t do anything (card wise) was frightening.

  2. Rather business as usual for Dowd when Arsenal is playing…

He can be a great ref but as we saw last season his bias is somewhat his weak spot

  3. Oooh I love statistics.

Has any referee got 100% correct? Allowing for human error I can’t imagine that ever happening.

Also what is the acceptable margin for error in percentages you allow a ref in a game?

And has any ref actually got more decisions wrong for the opposing team?

  4. Walter,
For the sake of absolute clarity, can you please confirm that the reviews of referees in Arsenal games are done, as far as possible, by referees who do not profess to be Arsenal supporters.

I have for years explained the numerous odd refereeing decisions in our games as being down to the (unwritten clause 8b – “unless an Arsenal player is involved”, which I am sure that Dowd had a hand in writing but then I make no pretence to be un-biased.

For this game I think the reviewer got it right and Dowd didn’t. W Ham should have finished with nine players on the pitch.

  5. Andrew,

We now have 9 reviewers who have engaged and try to work for us for the moment.
The minority now are Arsenal supporting refs with 4. The 5 others support various other teams.

  6. Rupert,

In fact this season we have had a couple of 100% scores. (published on referee decisions website)

This is down to the fact that we only overrule the ref when we are 100% sure of him being wrong. (Why do I need to write “him” for refs. come on ladies…. )

The way we work is rather “ref friendly” to be honest… Even though they will not like it 😉

  7. Though I am a big fan of reviews, I have 1 or 2 points to discuss particularly about this review.

How come referee gets 2 wrong decisions for every missed foul? e.g.- min 11: Carroll sticks out his hand. Foul not given by Dowd. -3 and done. Why there is NC decision for free kick again? Free kick is direct result of foul. No foul no free kick. What is the point of giving him -6 points for a missed foul? Just take a case that Dowd missed a foul by Carroll at 11 min and identified a correct foul by Vermaelen at 14th min. Now shouldn’t he have 1 C and 1 NC decision making 50% decisions correct both IN NUMBER and IN WEIGHT?
But here we have 1C and 2 NC decisions and 14% correct in weight. Doesn’t look fair at all.

Another thing- As far as I know, we give the fouls weight of 3. But for all correct decisions for fouls, weight given is 1 and for NC, it is given 3. That’s kinda larger bias than referees have against us. 😉

I am saying all this not to discourage you but just putting my thoughts to make our project more realistic. Keep it up. Cheers

  8. Justin the reason is that making a correct decision is what the ref should do. And we do give ref extra points when e.g. they give a good advantage. That also counts for 2 x 3 points.

The reason we give 2 point lines on each decision is because the ref on the field makes two decisions also.
    1. the foul
    2. the free kick

A ref could give the foul outside the penalty area (when it is inside as an example) then he gets good points for calling the foul. But when he places the ball outside the penalty area and it should have been inside he loses points for a wrong decision.

  9. GOD forbid, but if we get adraw that will be great, if we win it will be a miracle and if we lose i wont be surprised. We are like something is tied on our legs as of gervinho i dont know how many chances does a striker need!!!!
