According to the Telegraph, speaking of Newcastle and the new manager’s regime, “Some players have been so tired after the more gruelling sessions that they had to go straight to bed when they got home.”
Which might help us along to getting the win and the rebuilding of confidence after the Liverpool game. And the results historically have been in our favour, for apart from anything else, over the centuries we’ve beaten Newcastle 82 times and lost to them 67, with the remaining 38 being draws.
All of which makes it seem in our favour, but only a little, making it a rather balanced affair between us, except that the history of the fixture is that this century they haven’t been quite so good. Indeed if we start with the match on 2 March 2002, there have been 41 games of which three have been won by Newcastle and eight have been draws.
Taking a shorter period of time covering the last 30 games since November 2006 the record is two defeats and five draws, with the rest of the games being won by Arsenal.
We have in fact collected some videos together of some of our most famous victories on the Arsenal History Society site, and you can see them all, including the famous 7-3 on the Newcastle page of the website.
But let us not gloat too much and instead just focus on more recent times. Here is a list of the last six outings between the clubs…
Date | Game | Res | Score | Competition |
15 Sep 2018 | Newcastle United v Arsenal | W | 1-2 | Premier League |
01 Apr 2019 | Arsenal v Newcastle United | W | 2-0 | Premier League |
11 Aug 2019 | Newcastle United v Arsenal | W | 0-1 | Premier League |
16 Feb 2020 | Arsenal v Newcastle United | W | 4-0 | Premier League |
09 Jan 2021 | Arsenal v Newcastle United | W | 2-0 | FA Cup |
18 Jan 2021 | Arsenal v Newcastle United | W | 3-0 | Premier League |
02 May 2021 | Newcastle United v Arsenal | W | 0-2 | Premier League |
And I am not gloating but it does seem that they haven’t scored in the last six games – or put it another way, the have not scored in the last 630 minutes, so on that basis I guess one might say that they are due a goal rather soon. I mean, they must get one, some time.
But of course, with this overwhelming balance in recent times in favour of Arsenal, the BBC still manage in its preview to focus on something in Newcastle’s favour. They can’t find a win – that would be going too far – but their prime excitement ahead of the game is the 4-4 draw, 12 years ago. Really, this anti-Arsenal feeling in the corporation really is starting to get out of hand.
The BBC for once is however not tipping Arsenal to screw up again. They say, “If Newcastle are as open as they were in their 3-3 draw with Brentford last week, they will carry on leaking goals.
“It’s not a bad idea for them to be more attacking under Eddie Howe because, in the position they are in, they need to win games. They will beat some teams playing that way – but not Arsenal.”
Here’s another snippet that is worth remembering. Arsenal have never lost a Premier League home fixture against the side starting the day bottom of the table.
And here is another snippet of note, Emile Smith Rowe can become the first English player to score in three successive home league matches for Arsenal since Ian Wright in 1997. Again, thanks to the BBC for that one. Which if we add in the notion that Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang has scored in his five most recent appearances against Newcastle, gives a further feeling that really we ought to get this one put to bed in the first 20 minutes.
But on the other hand this is Newcastle’s longest run without a win from the start of a league season ever, and that does have to stop sometime. And Newcastle going down was probably not on the agenda for the new owner. I think if things do go wrong, Eddie Howe might wish to avoid any meetings that are held within the Saudi embassy in London.
However let’s finish with one more funny little statistic. The Newcastle manager always lost to Arsenal when he was Bournemouth manager, so he clearly knows what he is doing.
- Arsenal v Newcastle: injuries, tackles, fouls, yellows and changing the team
- Arsenal v Newcastle and when life in Europe really isn’t worth it
I love the honesty ‘Eddie Howe might wish to avoid any meetings that are held within the Saudi embassy in London’ and obvious humour.
my pick today’d be:
ramsdale
chambers-holding-gabriel-tierney
pépé-saka-odegaard-smithrowe-balogun
nketiah
the new boys haven’t done enough to deserve a secure spot imo (tomi the one i like most though)
as for auba/laca, i like ’em but they have to be … “spurred” (!!) too
well, not a snowball chance in hell, obviously
COYG anyway
laca the only one to get axed
why am i not surprised?
as for tavares ahead of tierney – don’t know what to say, really
well, what DO i know?
come on you red machine
I had Laca to score the first goal. But then Arteta is the boss. Captain missit is an embarassment.
Kraft on an orange card & gets away with a second yellow. Xhaka would have been in the shower already. So many fouls being allowed to go uncarded.
But Saka does it again!! 1-0 to the Arsenal
Our little atom bomb Gabriel ‘Ayerton’ Martinelli makes it 2 – 0 to the Arsenal.
I prefer AMN to Partey. He is more reliable and smarter thinking.
The idiots on french TV were describing the catastrophic goal difference Arsenal have. Like this is the end of the world, etc etc.
I just checked the table and discovered that yeah, we’ve got -2. Spurs are -6, MU -1
And there are 5 clubs with a positive GD.
They did point out the enormous jump Arsenal have done up the table from their position after 3 games. We are fifth at least until next week-end.
Guess we are not as bad as we are made to be !
