The final transfer rumours: 3 new names to make 66 players tipped for Arsenal

We’re on the last day of transfers and anything added from now on (now being 0815 GMT) will be cheats, as details of a medical turn up rather than a journalist actually having information about what will happen.

Our scamper around the window this time revealed 66 players tipped to come to Arsenal across 341 reports.

This window saw a much greater tendency than previously for publications to repeat themselves which is why we added the final Rpt column to show how many of the reports on each player were repeats by a publication that had already mentioned the player.

It was pretty much a disaster of a window for journalists with all these players mentioned – for although Arsenal might sign some more players at the moment it is just Leondro Trossard and Jakub Kiwior who are incoming.  So just 97% of the players mentioned have not been signed and 96% of the reports turned out to be false.

So one might ask, not for the first time, what is the point of 341 reports covering 66 players when only two of them sign (although there may be more in the rest of today)?  If you are following our series on “What the media won’t tell you about football”, you might be getting an insight.

If not, here’s a clue: making up transfer rumours which are blamed on other publications is the cheapest form of journalism there is.
