I’m waiting eagerly the moment when we have a referee Smith in the PL. Reminds me of an old series on TV. But for now we have to do with ref Jones. Let us take a look at how the teams do when he is in charge of their games.
Again a little note to new readers and sorry for the regulars that this might sound boring. You can go to the table immediately.
We have taken all the teams in the PL and then we have compared their overall results with the results under every ref. We also have given those results a kind of judgement.
When you see in the last column the word “over” this means that the team in question is doing better or in some cases far better than their average results in general under this ref.
If you see the word “average” then this means that the results of the team in general are not far away from the results with this ref.
And when you see the word “under” it means that the results of the team are bad compared to what they do in general.
Those words are not a measurement on how the ref in his decision making it only compares the win percentage with or without this ref.
So here we go with referee Mike Jones

Let us start with the teams who do better than they usually do. And in this category we can put the names of Arsenal, Aston Villa, Chelsea, Manchester City, Stoke, Sunderland, Tottenham, West Bromwich Albion and West Ham. That is nine teams who do better than can be expected. Rather a big number I would say.
Who are the teams who do average then? Fulham, Manchester United, Newcastle and Wigan. That is only four teams out of the possible 20. A rather small number of average teams I must say. I’m a little bit surprised by this lowly average number.
So we must have seven teams who do badly when Jones is around. Who are they? Everton and Liverpool for starters. So not a big friend of anything coming from Liverpool it seems. We also have Norwich, QPR, Reading and Southampton among the teams who are not performing to their usual standards. And finally Swansea as the last team to under perform when he is around.
Certainly the numbers for Southampton are bad. Very bad. He seems to be their bogey-Dean-ref. 0 wins in 8 games. That is even for Southampton very under-performing. Norwich also is doing rather bad when he is around but they managed to get one win in their games.
It seems that Mr. Jones is a bit of a black/white ref for many teams. Of course this could be a result of him having those under performing teams when they play the big teams and thus resulting in more losses than average. We have a few high scoring teams who can be found in the top six in his over performing teams so this could be a partial explanation. Maybe he is just very kind to top teams in general? Or is he a ref who protects the better players and thus stops the kicking teams a bit? But then again Swansea is not really a kicking team. Maybe he doesn’t like Wales?
Anyway another set of numbers that can get you thinking of which teams have a seemingly better chance of winning a game when he is in charge. Or have a big chance of losing their game?
