By Walter Broeckx
In our series to find out with which ref some teams perform better than average we have referee Anthony Taylor next.
But first let me explain in short the average, under and over thing you see in the last row. This is for new readers of course. Regular readers can skip this text and go to the table.
When you see “average” it means that the results of the team in general are not that far away with the results when the ref is in charge. It is in fact what one should hope to see most.
When we see “over” it means that the team in question is doing much better and in some cases much much better than they usual do.
And when you see “under” it means that the team is doing bad compared to their usual win percentage.
We must warn you that Taylor is one of the rather new refs in the PL and that just as with a few others we must look at the results a bit carefully. You need at least 5 games to really see a trend in the numbers.
But now let us see the results of the teams under referee Taylor

Thus we see a lot of teams with just a few games. So we will not really take in account the 100% score Tottenham has. Only 1 game when we took our numbers. The Manchester City and West Ham United stats are also to be neglected as it only is about 2 and 3 games. So we have 3 teams that I will not count at all.
But let us look at the other teams and first we start with the teams who do in general better than their average. We have Arsenal, Chelsea, Fulham, Manchester United, Sunderland and West Bromwich Albion. That is 6 teams in total.
The Manchester United stats are rather strange because well this is a ref from Manchester and he does games of Manchester United and also games of City. One would think that a ref from a certain area would not do teams from that area but Taylor does both teams. I guess. I think. He did.
The score of WBA is also rather high and also for Arsenal he isn’t that bad. No game lost so far. Let us hope we can keep that record alive for a (long) while if possible.
Also Sunderland have a high win % when he is around. Very high in fact. And this is based on the mos games for any team.
Now let us turn our attention to the teams who do averagely well. Aston Villa, Everton, Liverpool, QPR, Reading, Stoke, Swansea and Wigan all do close to their usual average. If you counted them that is 8 teams who do rather averagely when Taylor is the ref.
Newcastle, Norwich and Southampton are the only teams who badly under achieve when Taylor is around when we look at the win numbers. And yet Norwich is a team that cannot win much but also hardly ever loses. They have a lot of draws when Taylor is around. And I remember a few of them controversial with some strange referee decisions.
But as I have said before this is all about not that many games for most teams. We will keep an eye on this in the future of course and hope that we then can get more accurate numbers.
And I think this will not be a problem for the next and final ref in this series: Webb.

By coincidence this is the ref for Chelsea – Everton with both teams slightly over performing when he is around.
Taylor’s stats this season are like this: he did , both on home turf, 1 win 1 draw, both with lower-ranked opposition (Fulham & Norwich). He also did Chelsea-Swansea 0-2 in the League Cup. But with it’s even better 😉 3 matches, 3 wins, of which 2 away, at West Ham & Swansea. Of course, Chelsea is another matter, but, the pattern is certainly interesting.
Sorry for the messed up links. Takes a bit of practice.
Taylor’s stats this season are like this: he did 2 Chelsea matches, both on home turf, 1 win 1 draw, both with lower-ranked opposition (Fulham & Norwich). Hurry up with the Howard Webb analysis. Apparently he’s the ref for the upcoming fixture at Newcastle. 😉
Tyler,
it should come online before Sunday 😉
we have not lost the last six matches officiated by Webb. this tuesday we saw dean break his record against arsenal. will we see webb breaking his record???
Somehow I don’t really see this happening. The team proved time and again the it can grind out a result when needed. We saw what the lack of motivation can do to a team throughout the whole last weekend. Once the risk of being relegated was gone, or the chance to advance in the standings evaporated, so did the results. At this moment, Newcastle have some pride to defend, and maybe a few positions to gain, which would bring them a bit more money, but not a lot – certainly a lot less than what we would lose should we not beat them. I think we’ll beat them:)
Americangooner, correction in terms of emphasis, on Tuesdat we beat both Dean and Wigan. Wigan weren’t good enough to take advantage of the opportunities offered and from 60 minutes on looked like a team with nothing left. I don’t think we are done with Dean yet but the club management, supporters and players are now definitely ‘on to him’ and seem to be taking appropriate action to limit the damage he causes us.
It seems that in the USA the media is questioning the politics of former PL ref Walton? http://www.mlssoccer.com/news/article/2013/05/15/referee-chief-peter-walton-says-toronto-fcs-criticisms-are-valid
We could offer to send them Riley maybe? 😉
