Arsenal v Everton: past games between the clubs, and Everton’s awful away form

By Bulldog Drummond

Arsenal and Everton have played 61 games against each other in the Premier League of which Arsenal have won 35, 14 have been drawn and 12 were defeats.  Arsenal have scored 117 and Everton 56.  It’s quite a one-way affair.

But despite that Everton remain one of the elite six – the six teams that were there at the start and have never been relegated from the Premier League.  The full list is:

Arsenal, Chelsea, Everton, Liverpool, Manchester United and Tottenham Hotspur.

So this could be the season in which that number reduces to five.

Indeed even if we look back across all of league football, Arsenal are still very much on top when it comes to playing Everton, with 109 wins to Arsenal, 65 to Everton and 46 draws.

However we must remember that it was after a ten match sequence in league and cup games in which Everton did not win a single match, that the result on 4 February this year was Everton 1 Arsenal 0.  Since then they have played three, lost two (away to Liverpool, home to Villa) and beaten Leeds by the single goal.

But to give a broader picture during the last 26 Arsenal v Everton games played in north London, Everton have only won one of those league matches: that on 23 April 2021.

That result was not unexpected – Everton were at that time above Arsenal in the league and had a game in hand.  And even more to the point Arsenal were about to play the first leg of their Europa League semi-final again Villareal (managed by Unai Emery).  Arsenal’s goal was a penalty from Pepe.

And there is another little bit of fun to be found in the figures.  Arsenal score lots of goals against Everton – in fact more than against any other Premier League team.   If you are an old-timer like me you might remember a few of these.  All the games were Premier League matches (just to avoid any suggestion that I am slipping in a few league cup results).

Date Match Res Score
11 May 2005 Arsenal v Everton W 7-0
15 Aug 2009 Everton v Arsenal W 1-6
22 Oct 2017 Everton v Arsenal W 2-5
03 Feb 2018 Arsenal v Everton W 5-1
23 Sep 2018 Arsenal v Everton W 2-0
22 May 2022 Arsenal v Everton W 5-1

In fact no Premier League team has scored five or more, against another, than Arsenal against Everton.

Against this is the fact that in the last four home league games against all opposition, Arsenal have won just one, drawn two and lost one, which is why in the league table based on home games Arsenal are only third.  Worse still, in the last 16 Premier League matches at home, Arsenal have only had two clean sheets.

But on a more positive note if Arsenal do win then their total number of points will be 60 from 25 games, which has only been matched in 2003/4 (a season you might recall) and 2007/8.

And here is a bit of fun from the BBC: “Martinelli is one shy of 10 Premier League goals, and could become the third Brazilian to reach double figures in a single campaign while aged 21 or under, emulating Gabriel Jesus in 2017-18 and Richarlison in 2018-19.”

And just to make the picture even more interesting the BBC site adds that “Everton have never won a Premier League game away to the side starting the day top of the table, drawing five and losing 19 such matches.”  (Where do they get some of these facts?)

Plus here is one more.  A look at Everton’s away form.  Everton have won five away games this season.   The last of those was on 1 October 2022 when they beat struggling Southampton away 1-2.   Since then the results have been…

“Everton have never won a Premier League game away to the side starting the day top of the table, drawing five and losing 19 such matches.” (Where do they get some of these facts?)

Indeed, where do they get these things from Tony, which is what makes it even more galling when they print the utter nonsense they do, or at least non contextual gibberish just in order to put us, and others it has to be said, down?

We know, with examples such as this that the sheer amount of data and or statistics they must have access to is enormous. That means it has to be an editorial choice to lie, deceive and mislead, often in accordance with an existing agenda.

Amy Lawrence for example must of known that what she was saying when having that pop about our lack of goal scorers was utter non contextual gibberish. So why did she do it?

Editorial policy of putting Arsenal down?

  2. Well, I was wrong in my post yesterday. They can and did score 4! Great match! Three points and a clean sheet by a finger almost at the death. Once Arsenal broke through the result wasn’t in doubt. COYG!!
