Goals, assists and other stuff

By Alek Pan

This is the second statistical analysis of the way in which football (mostly from an Arsenal perspective) actually works.

(Goals + Assists)/Game

This table looks at all competitions from beginning of season 2011-2012 to 23 November 2011. Method of calculation the same as in article are given in the earlier article.

What a surprise!  Yossi Benayoun is third in table! Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain is fourth!  Carl Jenkinson is more effective than Tomas Rosicky, Marouane Chamakh, André Santos and Mikel Arteta!

That was in all competitions. But how these guys do their things in EPL only?

Alex Song is third. Marouane Chamakh is our fifth most effective player. Yossi Benayoun  and Andrei Arshavin obviously show their  productivity at some other places.

Let’s take a look at some additional numbers for EPL games.

I think that information like shots on target per goal generally just mirrors the style of  the players. The most impotent indicator of efficiency is goals and assists per game.

So I suppose the most effective attacking players of Arsenal which played 6 games and more is:

In all competitions:

(G+A)/Game
Robin Van Persie

1,21

Gervinho

0,71

Aaron Ramsey

0,47

Alex Song

0,38

Theo Walcott

0,37

Andrei Arshavin

0,3

Carl Jenkinson

0,26

Mikel Arteta

0,23

André Santos

In the EPL:

Robin Van Persie

1,41

Gervinho

0,78

Alex Song

0,56

Aaron Ramsey

0,45

Theo Walcott

0,38

Mikel Arteta

Robin Van Persie is beyond compare. Gervinho played very well particularly given that it is the beginning of his first season. Song is fantastic considering that he is a DM. Aaron Ramsey is gradually moveing up. Theo Walcott is regaining his previous brilliant form.

Carl Jenkinson, Mikel Arteta and André Santos – welcome to Arsenal. And do you remember rates of Yossi Benayoun and Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain from the first table of this article – they didn’t play  so much but were very very effective. Overall we are pretty effective in offence department and I love it.

  1. Ask yourself whether Walcott is to blame for setting up scoring chances and his team-mates fluffing them.

Your stats saw he has one assist all season, presumably setting up van Persie at Carrow Road. Of course, you’ll be doubling that tally after Saturday, won’t you?

Would you indicate how many scoring chances he set up and were missed, because that is the appropriate metric for a winger?

  2. I also actually think, Theo is becoming one of the most effective players at the Arsenal. I’m hoping in January he gets some games as an out and out striker, then we will see whether after RVP we can have a successor from inside or we need to buy one.

  3. @Rhys Jaggar
I can only repeat that Theo Walcott is gaining previous brilliant form. And yes some of chances created by him is fluffed.

This is the stats of key passes per game this season for EPL

    Mikel Arteta 2.7
    Gervinho 1.9
    Robin van Persie 1.8
    Aaron Ramsey 1.8
    Theo Walcott 1.3
    Tomas Rosicky 1.3
    Alexandre Song 1.3
    André Santos 1.3
    Andrey Arshavin 1.1
    Yossi Benayoun 1
    Kieran Gibbs 0.8
    Bacary Sagna 0.7
    Carl Jenkinson 0.7
    Emmanuel Frimpong 0.5
    Henri Lansbury 0.5
    Johan Djourou 0.4
    Laurent Koscielny 0.3
    Thomas Vermaelen 0.2
    Per Mertesacker 0.1
    Marouane Chamakh –

  4. I want to add something to stats of key passes

Opta (which stats for key passes shown above) is calculate Total games this way TG=GS+SB

But that way is not accurate enough. I calculate this way TG=GS+SB/3

This is more accurate. For example stats of key passes of some players which where many games used as substitute is (by my way of calculation)
    Tomas Rosicky 2
    Andrey Arshavin 1,565217
    Yossi Benayoun 3
    Johan Djourou 0,6

  5. Great stats Alek but is it fair to compare players who rarely get a game in the EPL or CL to those like RVP and Gervinho, who play week in and week out? If I were a squad player like Chamakh and allowed to play only as a last minute substitute or 1 in every 5 games or so, I’d be way out of tune with the AFC rhythm or style and would find it very frustrating and difficult to know where to play, when to shoot and so on. It seems we are comparing apples to oranges but knowing these stats (which I am sure Wenger has as well) really highlights the most efficient first team and squad players who can make a difference to the team in any competition.
We will see what our squad and youth players can do against a super-rich Club Tuesday night. What are your predictions?

  6. @ Domhuaille MacMathghamhna

I think there are 4 kinds of players. First one is the kind of players who are rarely playing a game. They are not gelled enough with team mates to do their best. But they can score or make an assist just because of luck. And their stats could be great just because of fortune not because of their abilities. And their stats could be poor just because of bad luck not because of their abilities.
The more games played the less influence of fortune on stats.

Second kind of players is kind of players who are playing games medium amount of time. It is enough to be gelled with team mates.

Third kind is kind of players who are playing for a long time. It is more difficult to keep high rates of goals and assists for long period than for medium period.

Fourth kind is kind of players who are playing too many games without rotation and getting tired. The tiredness impacts on their effectiveness.

    “What are your predictions?”

I don’t like to make predictions. But this time it is easy for me. I predict 50/50. 🙂

  7. I’m pretty disappointed with Ramsey…not as effective as he shud be in the attacking midfield role, especially since he’s the one who has played most of our games in that position. His finishin was very poor against fulham, he also needs to find those good assists…
