Ref Review: Arsenal vs Sunderland (0 – 0) [18/08/2012]

Woolwich Arsenal: the club that changed football

For two years now we have been reviewing the performances of referees in matches involving Arsenal.  Last year we introduced reviews of non-Arsenal matches.

Now we have once again expanded, and we have set up a separate site to review the non-Arsenal games: Referee Decisions.

Links to some of the recent reviews on the Referee Decisions web site are shown at the bottom of this post.  Arsenal reviews will continue to appear on Untold.  So off we go with Chris Foy and his activities in the first match of the season.

One thing is for sure. The game was played in a rather good spirit. No real dangerous challenges so the ref had a rather easy afternoon this time.  Sunderland defended well but never went over board. The time wasting was a bit of a problem and in this Foy was again very weak. Not being at the game I cannot judge if he ever urged the keeper to get on with it. If he didn’t it should have cost him another point.

Let us have a look at his competence numbers in this game

A very un-Foy score this is. A score well above 80%! That is way better than what we were used to last season when he even didn’t manage to get the 70% score.

So a very encouraging start from Foy to this season. Is he going to be the surprise packet of this season? Well the season is still early so better not draw too much conclusions on this game. But rather good I would say.

Let us see if it evens out in this game and have a look at the bias numbers

The first half was not just excellent in terms of competency but also in his bias numbers he scored the perfect score!

Alas he couldn’t keep this up in the second half and he became back a bit the Foy we used to know. Or maybe not completely because he was known last season as a home ref but this didn’t happen at the Emirates this time around.

Not much mistakes in fact but the majority going against Arsenal.

  1. forgot i guess podolski foul from behind it could have been a straight RED & the shot by podolski was saved by defender hand so penalty

  2. We are running a bit behind with the new website but this is of the first game of the season. The Stoke review will appear on of these days

  3. The Paralympics blind football bosses announce they won’t be using visually impaired referees.

Howard Webb and Phil Dowd said to be gutted.

  4. Kampala gun,

If Messi, Cesc or Ronaldo would be available… don’t hesitate 😉

I also wouldn’t mind Fellaini. He can even play in goal when needed so he could tick all the boxes.

If we don’t get serious injuries we should be okay I think, but you never know what is in front of you on that front… So just for in case one of those would be nice with a small advantage to the last mentioned ..

  5. Keep an eye open for the fourth offical against Southampton, See if he is our ref for the Man City game. Bit of a pattern maybe forming?

  6. I have been looking back through Arsenal.com and we have had Howard Webb a hell of alot when we play Liverpool home or away.

  7. Adam, I think last season we had the same thing a bit

Was Mason the 4th ref in the Sunderland game?

I think they do this so that when Wenger moans this week, the 4th ref who then is the ref on the field can take one back on him.

It would be interesting to see if other teams have the same patterns…

  8. @IL-Gooner lol read it fast and only looked for these 2 incidents didn’t pay attention on cattermol ” Sunderland” … thanks for the correction.
