For our game in the CL in Marseille we had ref  Skomina from Slovenia. Ever heard of him? Well I hadn’t until the match.

The ref made a few mistakes. Hence his low score on the important decisions.

He missed two penalties for handball. So even with 6 refs around the field they keep on missing them. And in fact the reason for missing them was because of Uefa changing the extra refs to the other side of the goal during the summer. Maybe if they still would have been on the other side of the goal they should have seen it. Oh well.

I also thought Koscielny was very lucky to stay on the pitch. He blocked the path of Cignac late in the game and as he was the last defender he was lucky the ref didn’t give a foul. For me it was a foul and then he should have give the red card also. So we were lucky on that.

Arsenal also could have had a penalty for a foul on Walcott when he took a low shot from short distance. But as the replays were all from the wrong angle I couldn’t be sure if the defender had taken his standing leg away or not. It looked that way but as I could not be sure I gave the ref the benefit of the doubt. If it was a foul the Marseille player also should have gotten a red card.

So rather a few mistakes but he divided his mistakes nicely over the two teams. I never had the impression that this ref was trying to tilt the game one way or the other and his overall decision making was rather good.

  1. Jenkinson handball was accidental, but Marseille handball was every bit intentional. What’s the use for these extra refs anyway?!

  2. Just to let you know that for some reason it seems that in Firefox the layout goes horrible wrong but in IE it does look good. Usually it is the other way round so I really don’t know what is wrong… 🙁

  3. Sammy, I think the use is to give the impression that they are trying to do something about it….

  4. Doea anyone know why they moved the extra refs to the same side as the linesmen? Was it to render them more of a joke?

    As far as the Jenkinson handball, the ref was close, and his arm was pretty close to his body, so I can see why it wasn’t given.

    Can somebody fix the problem please? By the time I’ve dragged the cursor to see the numbers, I’ve forgotten what the numbers represent! (I think it’s know as old timer’s disease)

  8. I also thought it looked a penalty on Theo by the way he fell sideways. I couldn’t really confirm it though either.
    Also, was the 66th min foul that was not given on RVP the one when RVP was going past the last defender and he had his arm pulled back? That looked like a sending off offense to me.

  9. The handball from the Marseille defender was a red card offence. Should be an extra point against them?

    The Firefox problem seems worse than first thought.

    I have been unable to access the site since yesterday using Firefox, I have just now discovered that I can get in through IE.
